Cecil was a friend and brother in Christ. He was always kind and was truly an inspiration to me. Our Lord has welcomed another good servant home. May our Lord bless and keep Anne, Vicky, and Cecil Jr. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

From the time Cecil, Anne, Vicky, and "little" Cecil arrived at Grandin Court Baptist Church, we knew that they were a special family. You all made an impact on our lives - "little" Cecil as he grew into handsome strong Cecil, Vicki as "the bird of paradise" at the county library, Ann with her gifts and style, and Cecil - my friend, my mentor, my colleague in ministry - I will so miss knowing that he is physically in our world, working always for what he passionately believed in, loving his family with his whole heart, and loving God with his whole being. Prayers to all those who grieve his loss.

Cecil was a rare individual - you could talk to him without fear of judgment or condemnation. He truly had a wonderful spirit and I trust that his spirit now rests with his Father. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Remembering My Loving Father In Law Cecil Gene Irwin Sr.His Love for his Grandchildren Brody and Nicholas was so evident in everything he did with them. Trips to the pond to feed the ducks holding their hands while they cast poles into the lake. These memories we hold so dear as God has taken him home. How do I begin to Thank him for the man he made in My Loving husband Cecil Gene Irwin Jr. as his loving soul trasnfered into him. How do I Thank him for giving such a wonderful role model for my sweet boy's to look up to? I know that every time his grandshildren look into the mirror they see their Granfathers smile and I surely see the sparkle from his eye's in theirs with every little blink. How do I Thank him for giving me all of these things? I know we will forever hold his memories close and look forward to seeing him again one day.He will NEVER be forgotten in our hearts and soul. With every prayer we say Cecil know that you are in them and for every time we hug one another know that you are hugged too we miss your strong arms around us but we understand that with a simple smile from one of your granchildren we see you!! You are truly missed here on earth we know God has you in his hands now!! Sincerely Your Daughter in Law Pamela Gail Irwin.

I worked with Chaplin Irwin at the VAMC and would go to him many times for advice on parenting. He was there for me when my father was dying to give me strength to get through his death and days to follow. He too performed my wedding ceremony in the chapel at the VAMC. I once told him he had to be there to preach my funeral and he laughed and said he would go before I would so I said for him to tape a video b/c I didn't want any one else to do it. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. I will be praying for his family.

It was always a pleasure to see Rev. Irwin on the units at the Salem VAMC. He was there for patients and staff alike to offer words of encouragement, common sense and a smile. We were privileged to have him among us. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

When I read of Cecil's passing, I was deeply saddened, but at the same time, flooded with so many wonderful memories of him. During the 70's I attended Al-Anon meetings at the VA and he and the other Chaplains took turns sitting in on the meetings. I was always so pleased when Cecil was with us, because he always gave us such rich wisdom and invaluable encouragement. We all considered him our friend, and so appreciated his humble manner and keen wit. Some 30 years later I am remarried to a wonderful Christian husband who neither drinks nor smokes, and who loves the Lord. Please know that Cecil touched many, many lives, and our lives were far richer because he touched them. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have fond memories of Mr. Irwin as a sweet and caring grandparent to his grandsons Nicholas and Brody , as well as a wonderful father to Cecil Jr. and father in law to my sister Pam . Animals loved him too ! His grandsons dogs Allie and Chewy always greeted him with wagging tails and hopped up on the couch to be near him . He was a blessing to know and always had such knowledge and kindness . He will be missed and remembered dearly.I am pleased to have known him and always knew i could count on him at the football games to explain all the plays :) Rest in Peace Mr iwin we will miss you.

Having worked with Chaplain Irwin at the Salem V.A.M.C. for many years, we are so saddened by his passing, but joyously happy for the life he lived. Our lives are richer for him having been a part of them. He was always there to talk, to listen to offer spirtual guidance.
This world is a better place for his passing this way...

I used to work with Cecil at the VA in Salem. He performed my marriage ceremony in 1982.
I told him to leave out the obey part and he laughed and he did omit it.
He was a wonderful person and will be missed.
May he rest in peace

It was my privilege to work with Cecil while he was on the Board of Directors of Mental Health Association (now Mental Health America) of Roanoke Valley. He was committed to educating his colleagues about mental illness and spirituality and contributed to the work of our agency in many ways. Please accept my sincere sympathy in your loss.
