Elsie Asher and I had some wild times together. We'd get in my car and go off for long drives through Botetourt or down the Parkway and she would help me plot out bicycle routes I would lead for the bike club. She would hold my yellow legal pad and write down the turns we'd make along the way. We'd stop and have a picnic or find a little country diner and Elsie would gamely find something to eat. One night we drove off to see the Christmas lights and I got us lost in the labyrinth behind Virginia Western Community College. But that didn't stop Elsie from going with me the next adventure; though she might ask me if I really knew where I was going! And some day ask Joesephine at the County Library Reference Desk about the wonderful hats she would make for Elsie who won every hat contest she entered at Lewis Gale. Elsie was a wonderful friend. I'll miss her.
