Robert Gasparoli Obituary

Robert E. Gasparoli, 88, of Roanoke, Va., died on Sunday, October 4, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; his sister, Gloria Leto; her four daughters, Penny, Barbara, Jane and Pam and their husbands; daughter, Lissa and her husband, Steve Gooch; daughter, Linda and her husband, Doug Bristol; daughter, Margaret and her husband, Kevin Tanner; son, Tom and wife, Joanna, and children, Ashley and Crews; grandchildren, Megan and husband, Brian Snoddy, Matt Gooch, Marissa Gasparoli, Genna and Dillon Tanner, Peyton and Kayla Bristol; and great-grandchild, Jacob Snoddy. Bob was a devoted family man. He was an electrical engineer for General Electric for 43 years and a professional engineer in New York and Virginia. He was a member of the World War II Army Engineers and served in Africa and Italy. Bob was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church and a member of the Kiwanis Club. His hobbies were woodworking and yard work. His deep sense of community service led him to volunteer as a tutor at Virginia Western Community College with the General Electric ELFUN computer refurbishing program, Talking Books for the blind, Meals on Wheels, tax preparation for the elderly, the Red Cross disaster service and the Roanoke Science Museum. A memorial mass will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church with Father Joseph Lehman celebrating. Family and friends are invited to stay for a reception at the church after the mass. In lieu of flowers, the Gasparoli family would prefer donations be made to the Meals on Wheels program or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

Dear Joan and Family,

I am so sad to hear of Bob’s passing. We worked together for over 30 years, in both Salem and Schenectady. His quiet competence and sunny disposition made marketing trips a joy. He will be missed.

Joanie and clan,

If there ever was a man who earned a spot in Heaven, Bob was the guy.

My good friend, and first boss back in 1952, was an amazing man.

His service as a volunteer to organizations that help others was ledgendary.

He was an outstanding engineer for GE. He took on the toughest tasks, and after successfully completing them, he moved on to the next challenge. Well grounded in the basics of mechanics and magnetics, he displayed flexibilty and drive in becoming expert enough to be a leader in electronics and then computer technology.

And,even with all those outside contributions, he was always there for his family. He dearly loved all of you, and considered himself the luckiest man alive to have you.

He will be missed.

Mrs. Gasparoli,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in the loss of your husband. I was very blessed by having your husband tutor me at Virginia Western. I struggled with electronics and physics and he always managed to open my eyes. I received my AAS in Computer Electronics Technology, which I would have never done without his help. I know firsthand that every life he has touched, has been truly blessed. May God comfort you during this time of sorrow.

Joan and the entire Gasparoli clan:
I'll always remember Bob with a twinkle in his eye and a ready joke. I know the GE mens' group lunches will be a little quieter with his passing. May the memories of all the good times you shared sustain you at this difficult time. With love and sympathy,

Bob was always the senior gentleman in the GE Marketing organization. We engineers appreciated his leadership and guidance.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. Gasparoli. I had the honor and good fortune to be tutored by him when I was in the electrical engineering program at VWCC. It was a very challenging program and I was a young, single mother with the deck stacked against me. I thought that I'd never make it. But thanks to his dedication and belief in my ability to succeed, I received my AAS degree in 1990 and have been working in the electronics field ever sense. He truly made all the difference in the world to me. Thank you, Mr. Gasaparoli. You will never be forgotten.

Sincerest Sympathies,
