Daurice Conner Obituary

June 18, 1930 ~ October 5, 2009 Daurice June Conner, of Salem, Va., passed away early Monday morning, October 5, 2009, at Lewis-Gale Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Vernie Conner and Mamie Elizabeth Dowdy. She was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Overacre. She is survived by her brother, Vernie "Junior" Gladden Connor, of Salem; and sisters, Helen Kitts, of Roanoke; Edith Bohon, of Hickory, N.C.; Margaret Fox, of Ironto, and Carolyn Flora, of Abingdon. Daurice, though single all her life, had numerous nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces, to whom she was like a mother. Daurice worked with the Maid Bess Company for well over 30 years before retiring around 15 years ago. Daurice was also a lifelong Presbyterian, a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in Salem, Va. Daurice loved children, had an incredible sense of humor, and always put others before herself. She truly had a servant's heart and was a friend to everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends; but there is great joy in knowing that she is now before the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The family will receive visitors at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Tuesday night, October 6, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at the Lotz Funeral Home Chapel in Salem. The Reverend Cameron S. Smith of New Hope Presbyterian Church will preside. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. There will be a reception for family and friends following the graveside service at the New Hope Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New Hope Presbyterian Church, 101 Keesling Ave., Salem, Va. 24153.

My great aunt Daurice was a wonderful sister to my grandmother and an aunt to my mother. I will always remember her sense of humor and her strength fighting breast cancer. It was such an honor to sing at her memorial service . Her family is grieving, however we are more relieved that her suffering is over and she can sleep in peace. God will take great care of her and we will all see her again someday.

I send my sympathy to all of Daurice's family. I remember her from visiting with your family in the 1940s. My father was Ollie Conner of Copper Hill, a first cousin to Vernie.
I'm sorry we've never kept in touch. I always enjoyed visiting at your home.
