George Ivie Obituary

George Lawson Ivie Jr., 85, of Staunton, Va., died on Thursday, October 8, 2009, at the Richfield Recovery & Care Center in Salem, Va. He was born on November 10, 1923, in Eden, N.C., to George Lawson Ivie and Isabella McRae Bullock Ivie. He was proceeded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lola Sherrill Ivie; and his second wife, Gloria W. Ivie. He had lived in Staunton since 1967. He was a graduate of NY Military Academy and Davidson College in North Carolina. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the 87th infantry division's medical detachment. He was highly decorated and received the Medics Combat Badge and the Bronze Star. He was employed by the Western Auto Company before his retirement. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling and his grandchildren. Survivors include one son, George Lawson Ivie III and wife, Laura, of Archer, Fla.; three daughters, Judie Weese, of Eden, N.C., Anita Buchanan and husband, Edward, of Tupelo, Miss., and Denise Battle and husband, Lemuel, of Roanoke, Va.; stepchildren, Marsha Harris and husband, Nelson, of Staunton, Va., and Rebecca Scarborough and husband, Fields, of Manteo, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his very dear friend, Myrce Johnson, of Staunton, Va. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2009, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. G. Jeffrey Allen. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Dr. David Chernoff and the staff of Home Instead Senior Care in Staunton also Dr. Syed Haider and the staff of Richfield Memory Care Assisted Living and the staff on 4 West of the Richfield Recovery & Care Center in Salem, Va., for their loving care of our father. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central and Western VA Chapter, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, Va. 22901 or a charity of your choice.
