Kelvin Thompson Obituary

Kelvin Jay (Stick) Thompson, 49, of Hardy, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. He was born on July 30, 1960, a son of Clinton and Rita Thompson, of Brushfork, W.Va. Kelvin was a 1978 graduate of Bluefield High School and was employed as a transmission lineman for American Electric Power (AEP) for 20 years. Kelvin enjoyed playing sports all through high school and after graduation played softball for Andy Clark Ford in the Bluefield, W.Va., league. Kelvin was a devoted WVU fan and enjoyed attending many of their games with his wife, Tammy. In addition to his parents, Kelvin is survived by his wife, Tamara Lynn Thompson; his former wife, Dorothy Thompson; one daughter, Nichole Thompson Long and her husband, Scotty Long; grandson, Dylan Jay; two stepdaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Greer and Stephanie Ann Greer; two step grandchildren, Alaina and Ashlyn; brothers, Kenny Thompson and his wife, Gay, Melvin Thompson and his wife, Kim, Boe Thompson, Charlie Thompson, and Rodney Thompson; sisters, Janie Powell and her husband, Richard, and Kathy Roberts and her husband, Ron; nieces, Melissa, Sarah, Samantha, Courtney, Danielle, and Tori; nephews, Jason, Cameron, Chris, Hunter, and Chase; and a great-nephew, Logan. The family would like to thank the physicians and staff of the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia, Pa., for allowing Kelvin to have two life fulfilling years. Without Dr. R. Willis and his commitment to cancer research, this would not have been possible. Also thanks to all who have prayed for Kelvin, he is at peace with God. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Oakey's East Chapel with the Rev. Joanne Newman officiating. Interment will be held 4 p.m. in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 23, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106A, Roanoke, Va. 24018. Arrangements by Oakey's East Chapel, 540-977-3909.

Butterball was one of a kind. He was the same anytime and any place you seen him. The world was blessed to have him in it. It was good to see you all on Friday night, it was a shame it had to be in the circumstances. I will continue to pray for you all and for God to help you get through this sad time.

To The Thompson Family,
I can remember the first day Kelvin came to work for APCO. He didn't act like he was the new guy, but as if he had worked there for years. We became fast friends and I found Kelvin to be not only a good friend but just as good a co-worker. We had lost touch over the years but I always asked the APCO guys about him. He will be greatly missed. The Thompson family will be in my prayers.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Tammy and the Thompson Family,

Words, however kind, cannot mend your heartache. But those who care for you, share your loss with you. May you be comforted and given peace in your hearts as you reflect on your wonderful memories--and may you find strength in the love of family and friends who care and share your grief. Sticks is never far...his memory is tucked safe in your hearts. May God's Love and Peace cover you at this time, and in every moment you need His strength...

With Deepest Sympathy,
The Family of Jeremiah (Buff) & Kala Johnson
