William Sweeney Obituary

William E. (Bill) Sweeney Jr., 85, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 23, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, William (Emmett) and Lucy Dillon Sweeney; brother, John M. Sweeney; and a sister, Ruth Marie Sweeney. Mr. Sweeney served with the United States Navy during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1264, the Disabled American Veterans, and Roanoke Moose Lodge # 284. He was a former member of Carpenters Union Local # 319. Surviving are his sister, Wanda L. Turner and husband, Warren, of Clarksville; sister-in-law, Margaret Sweeney, of Salem; nephews, Robert Turner, Lewis Turner and wife, Mei-Yin; nieces, Mittie Sue Overton, Teresa Fant and husband, Don, Vickie Nitsch and husband, Brian. The family suggests that memorials be made to Mr. Sweeney's favorite charity the Salvation Army, 724 Dale Avenue Roanoke, Va. 24013. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2009, in Fair View Cemetery by the Rev. Warren L. Turner. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, 366-0707.
