Jack Stanley Obituary

Jack Dempsey Stanley, 82, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Hibert Lee and Laura Grace Stanley; and brothers, Andrew "Doss" Stanley, and H.L. Stanley. He is survived by his loving wife of more than 61 years, Juanita Reed Stanley; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Stanley Mitchell and R. Edward Mitchell; granddaughter, Sarah W. Hobbs, all of Roanoke; sister, Anna Pauline Grampp, of Hampstead, N.C.; sisters-in- law, Barbara Stanley, Sarah “Libby� Stanley, and Wanda Reed and husband, William C. Nelson, all of Roanoke; and seven nieces and nephews. Jack was a graduate of Jefferson High School and served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. His years of Federal Service included 37 years with the Veterans Administration and with the Department of the Army as a recruiter. After 20 years of service in the U.S. Army Reserves, he retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. Jack was an avid athlete and an excellent tennis player. He loved classical music and enjoyed painting. He was an active member of Grandin Court Baptist Church and a member of BPOE 197. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Kevin Meadows officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grandin Court Baptist Church, Ministries Activities Center. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.
