Daniel Shaffer Obituary

Daniel Tyndall Shaffer, 86, of Roanoke, Va., passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. He was born on June 5, 1923 in Williamsport, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Cynthia Shaffer. He served his country as an Air Operations Specialist in the Pacific Theatre of the Army Air Force during World War II. Using the GI Bill, he graduated from Lycoming College in 1950 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After retiring from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, Md. in 1982, he spent time traveling with his wife, Shirley. Dan was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved being at the beach or in the mountains. In addition to his wife of 47 years, Shirley, and his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Faye Good and Cynthia Ramen, of Pennsylvania. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Keefer and husband Ron, of Pennsylvania, Cheryl Campbell and husband Jerome, of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Kim Crist and husband Shawn, of Roanoke, Dan Campbell and wife, Tricia of, Virginia Beach, Rob Campbell, of Roanoke; special long time friends, Clint Mowen, of Pennsylvania, Jean Williams, of Delaware, Fred Ellsworth, Bill Weston and buddies of Friendship Manor for making a difference in his life; along with nieces and nephews. A special thanks from the family to CSICU and Palliative Care Team of Roanoke Memorial Hospital and to Friendship Manor 2 North for their compassion and care of Dan. The family will receive friends at Oakey's East Chapel from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2009. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Montoursville Cemetery in Montoursville, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216 or the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Rd., Suite 106 A, Roanoke, Va. 24018. Arrangements by Oakey's East Chapel, 540-977-3909.

Mr. Shaffer was a good "buddie" to my Dad, P.E. Shorter. I will always remember them in the hall at Carrington Place talking and laughing. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry for your loss.
