Charles Snead Obituary

Charles H. Snead, 85, of Salem, went home to the Lord on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. He was from Roanoke, Virginia born to Charles and Effie Snead. He was a proud graduate of the University of Virginia and served our country in the Army during World War II in both France and Germany. After graduation, he moved to Jacksonville and then to Atlanta working in sales until returning to Salem in the early 1970s upon which he assisted his mother in managing the Windsor Motel on West Main Street in Salem until 2000. He was a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and although not known to many, he helped a lot of people down on their luck that were fortunate to happen upon the Windsor. An avid golfer, he spent many a Saturday enjoying a friendly match with his golf buddies at Blue Hills. He also loved country music and was a big fan of George Strait. He was married to Joanne Snead for 49 years, who went to heaven in 2006. He has three children, Marilyn, Bud, and Mark; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 30, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home's chapel. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The Rev. Bobby Pickle will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Snead's name may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Memorial Program at P.O. Box 14301 in Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301. I remember well how Hugh always greeted us with his wonderful smile and a tidbit of something that had happened to us that I never thought anyone would remember. A remarkable man. He will be missed.
