Richard Terrill Obituary

Richard Allen Terrill, 63, of Bedford, Va., passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009, at his residence. He was born on Wednesday, September 18, 1946, in Ravenna, Ohio, a son of the late Edwin Terrill and Doris Heritage Terrill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Chervan Terrill. He was Chairman and Vice-President at Frank Chervan, Inc. and was a member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Richard and his family moved to Virginia in 1976 continuing his 43 year long career at Frank Chervan, Inc. Richard was well known in the furniture industry for his ingenuity and extensive knowledge of chair manufacturing. Richard dearly enjoyed close relationships with his co-workers which he, mentored and lead throughout his career. He had a wide variety of interest outside of work and participated in many community and family activities. In Ohio Richard served as the President of his local Jaycees chapter. Richard worked in several leadership roles with the Bedford Family YMCA an organization he cared deeply for. He also was a member of the Bedford Kiwanis. His talents as a cook were put to work at the Sedalia Center as they were at home with family and friends.
Richard had a lifelong affection for cars. He lovingly restored many antique automobiles and in recent years enjoyed the time he spent with his long time friend, Russ Johnson, at the local race track. Their team "Never Enuff Racing" was known both as strong competitors on the track, and as kind and generous to their fellow racers.
He was a loving and supporting grandfather to his two granddaughters. His life was truly blessed by rekindling an old Ohio friendship with Mrs. Arlene King. He greatly enjoyed the time he spent with her and the chance to return more to Ohio and enjoy being with his sister Barb and their family. Richard was indeed a hard working man, but also a gentle soul.
The family dearly appreciates the outpouring of love and sympathy they have experienced. We were all blessed to have known him, worked with him, learned from him and loved him.
Surviving are his two sons, Steven Terrill and wife, Molly Stouten, of Greensboro, N.C., and Gregory Michael Terrill and his wife, Nicole Brewer Terrill, of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Nora Jane Terrill and Sally Haldon Terrill; a sister, Barbara Terrill Stary and husband, Robert, of Rootstown, Ohio; a life long friend, Arlene King, of Shalersville, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Brittany Sleeper; a stepson, David Sleeper; two nieces, Christina Kelly and Jennifer H. Demmin; two nephews, Tim Stary and Kevin Hill; and a sister-in-law, Fay Chervan-Hill.
The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider the Bedford YMCA, P.O. Box 1026, Bedford, Va. 24523, the Roanoke YMCA or Bedford Hospice House, P.O. Box 985, Bedford, Va. 24523.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2009, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church with Father Salvador Anonuevo officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 29, 2009, from noon until 2 p.m. and from 5 until 7 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford, Va., 540-586-3304.

Dear Family,
We very saddened to hear about the loss of Richard. We are very upset we cannot be there to say goodbye. He was a very kind and loving man and he will be missed greatly. We always looked foward to seeing him at church. He truly adored our son Diego and was almost made his god-father at his baptism. Our prayers are with the family and I pray that his memory be cherished.

Steve, Greg, and families,

I was sorry and saddened to hear about your loss today. We spent many a long night as kids at your houses in Bedford and in Sedalia. Both your mom and dad had a big impact on me and I'm sure many of our friends. Their generosity and general coolness were unmatched. As a parent now it's even more impressive. I will remember Richard's laughter and incredible work ethic. I hope you both will be able to cherish his memories, too.

Whole Terrill family,

It is very sad to hear of Rich's death. We have so many memories of both Rich and Janet as they were good friends, neighbors, and co officers with us in the Ravenna Jaycees. Even after the move to Virginia, we visited and maintained correspondence. Our sympathies to you all.
