Diana Deering Good

Diana Deering Good died at her home in Roanoke, Va., on Monday, October 26, 2009. She was born in Houston, Texas, in 1936, and spent her childhood in Richmond, Va. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Emory and Henry College and a master of arts in child development from Syracuse University. She was founder and first director of the Sherburne Cooperative Nursery School, a school that served children of central New York for more than 30 years. The State University of New York and Binghamton Community College employed her as a lecturer in psychology, child development, and family relations. After moving with her husband to Illinois, she became a custody mediator for the courts of Champaign, Ill., and worked with the campus ministry at Community United Church of Christ. She retired to Roanoke in 2001. Since that time she has written a novel based on the actual story of a Quaker missionary to Alaska. She has remained active in the Roanoke Society of Friends (Quakers) and in two local reading groups. Diana is survived by A.J. (Jack) Good, her husband of 52 years; and their daughter, Kristen Reiner, of Middletown, N.J. Also surviving are her son-in-law, George Reiner; her grandson, John Reiner, her brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Melvin and Doris Good, of Raleigh; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday, November 6, 2009, at the UnitarianUniversalist Church, 2015 Grandin Road, Roanoke.
