Lois Wirt Obituary

Lois Durmon Wirt, 78, of Pulaski, Va., died peacefully, in her sleep at home Saturday October 31, 2009. She was born in Pulaski, Va. on September 14, 1931, to the late David W. and Carrie Crawford Durmon. She was their youngest child and daughter, and was also preceded in death by her brothers, David and Merle Durmon; and sisters, Joy Cox and Mako Jones. For many years Lois worked at the old Pulaski Drug Store and later as a pharmacy technician at Pulaski Community Hospital, after her retirement she often cared for older folks and was in great demand as a "senior sitter." She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski, but was unable to attend in recent years because of a lengthy illness. Surviving are her husband of 36 years, Neal Wirt, of Pulaski; a stepson, Hampton Wirt, of Woodlawn, Va.; brother-in-law, Ralph Wirt and his wife, Martha, of Shiloh; sister, Rachael Dew (Duckie) Smith and her daughter, Suellen, of Pulaski; sister-in-law, Linda Young, of Kannapolis, N.C.; very special friends and mentors, Kristi Bowman,, of Dublin, Anna Bush of Wytheville, Anne Neighbors and Betty Lou Crawford, of Fairlawn, Mary Roop, Mary Sue Peters, Henry and Vickie Higginbotham and her longtime hairstylist, Glenna Cox, all of Pulaski; and many nieces and nephews. Although she had no biological children of her own, Lois was a "mother figure" to many. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hugh Kilgore and Dr. C.R. Conner officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Dublin. Visitation will be Monday at the funeral home from 12 noon until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 135 4th Street, N.W. Pulaski, Va. 24301 or to the First Pentecostal Holiness Church 955 Memorial Drive, Pulaski, Va. 24301. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

Neal- So sorry to hear about your wife Lois. My sister in law E. Wirt in Roanoke sent me a e-mail that Lois's death was in paper. Did not know that she had been sick. Our thoughts and prayers are with you

Neal,
Lois was so dear to me and to so many others. She helped me through a very hard time in my life, and I will be eternally grateful for that. She was the most giving person, and never asked anything in return. There just isn't enough that I can say about her, except that she was my dear dear friend. My thoughts and prayers will be with you throughout the coming days.

Neal:

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how close both of you were. I smile at my memories of Ms. Wirt's patience with me when I phoned in survey requests, and those delicious treats she made and delivered every Christmas with a smile. Please take care of yourself.
