Frieda Surratt Obituary

Frieda Chitwood Surratt, of Hillsville, Va., passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at home. She was the widow of Collin J. Surratt and was born on April 2, 1926, in Carroll County to Howard and Ethel Marshall Chitwood who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a niece, Susan Jane Chitwood. She retired from the Virginia Department of Highways on January 1, 1989, with 33 years of service. She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard A. Surratt, of Friendsville, Tenn., and Gregory H. Surratt and wife, Teresa P. Surratt, of Forest, Va.; a granddaughter, April Surratt Clark and husband, Joshua; great-granddaughter, Kaileigh Madison Clark; greatgrandson, Collin Andrew Clark, of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister, Ethel Marie Branscome, of Hillsville, Va.; and brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Jane Chitwood, Longview, Texas; one niece and husband, Gina and Eric Crowder, of Hillsville, Va.; three nephews, Dennis Branscome and wife, Sara, of Sterling, Va., Ray A. Chitwood and wife, Cindy, of Longview Texas, and Joe H. Chitwood and wife, Regina, of Blountville, Tenn.; one greatniece, Kasey Rae Chitwood; and two great-nephews, Daniel Nir Branscome and Nathan Alan Branscome. She is also survived by stepmother, Lanora Quesenberry Chitwood; one stepsister; and three stepbrothers. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at the Hillsville Christian Church, by Dr. John Dunstan, where she had been a member since May, 1943. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 6 until 8 p.m. at VaughanGuynn-McGrady Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hillsville Christian Church, 230 Edgewood Drive, Hillsville, Va. 24343 or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Iva Easter, 1235 Beaver Dam Road, Hillsville, Va. 24343.
