Before you ask anybody in Rockbridge or Amherst County if they knew Bill Painter, you better have a chair to sit in and time to listen.
Long before the advantages of modern logging equipment, Bill and his crew (including my father)worked from dawn til dusk cutting timber, skidding logs, loading trucks and hauling wood to support his mother and brothers and,later, the family he raised as his own.
Not a big man physically, he had a heart the size of Texas. Bill was full of love which he freely shared with anyone and everyone and was always ready with a pocket full of change or chewing gum that brought smiles to the little children he loved so much.
I am honored to have known him, blessed to be related to him and grateful for all the valuable lessons he provided us all.
