Everett Roosevelt Tomlin Sr.

Everett Roosevelt Tomlin Sr., 89, of Bedford, Va., died Thursday, November 26, 2009, in the VA Medical Center. Born on April 20, 1920, in Rockbridge County, he was a son of the late Marian Virginia Reid Tomlin and Andrew Clarence Tomlin. He was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II as a surgical technician. He was also a retired press operator with General Electric. Everett enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and flying kites on the beach. In addition to his parents, Everett was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Lillian Pendergrass Tomlin; a sister, Minnie Camden; and a brother, George Tomlin. He is survived by three children, Dianne T. Wingfield and her husband, Richard, of Bedford, Gayle T. Kiger and husband, Doug, of Lynchburg, and Everett R. "Johnny" Tomlin Jr., of Bedford; five grandchildren, Troy Wingfield and his wife, Janie, of Bedford, Diana Branch and her husband, Greg, of Roanoke, Travis Wingfield and his wife, Allison, of Bedford, Stacey Kiger, of Virginia Beach, and Jacob Kiger, of Tennessee; four great-grandchildren, Skylar, Hallie, Lily and Brayden; a brother, Clarence "Junior" Tomlin and his wife, Phyllis, of Buena Vista; and two sisters, Ethel Garren, of Chesterfield, and Lillie Overstreet, of Bedford. A celebration of Everett's life will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2009, at Tharp Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Whitehurst officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #16 of Lynchburg.
