Hasaba Spence Obituary

Hasaba Criner Spence, 85, of Willis, Va., our mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister and friend went to be with her heavenly father on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. During her journey she was always surrounded by her loving family and the most wonderful caregivers and nursing staff of Carrington Place in Daleville Va., where she had made her home for almost four years. When she realized she could no longer live in the home and neighborhood she loved, she graciously accepted her new home and the family at Carrington Place as her own. She set an example for all of us to follow with her unending love of God, her family and friends.
She was blessed with two church families. She was a member of the Laurel Hill Church of Christ and attended Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren in her neighborhood.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Roy E Spence; her parents, Ray and Delphia Criner; her stepmother, Mamie Higgs Criner; brothers, Vivian, Henry, Elmer, Tom and Wendell Criner; and one sister, Ibra Brookman.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Beatrice Thompson and husband, Kenneth ,of Troutville, Va.; son, Wayne Spence, of Christiansburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Cheryl Lunsford, of Fincastle, Va., Lisa Bess and husband, David, of Roanoke, Ricky Spence and wife, Mendy, of Floyd, and Donnie Spence, of Stuart, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren, Erin and Ryan Lunsford, of Fincastle, Va., Brandon, Spencer, and Brooke Bess, of Roanoke, Va., and Jared and Abigail Spence, of Floyd.
She is survived by five sisters and one brother, Helen Bain (Carl), of Silver Springs, Fla., Joann Sowers (Frank), of Radford, Rachel Simpkins (Hugh), of Radford, Margie Mannon (Tommy), of Radford, Carol Whitlock (David), of Hiwassee, and Dennis Criner, of Phenix City, Ala.; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Viewing will be held on Friday, December 18, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Maberry Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to either Laurel Hill Church of Christ at 4737 Shanklin Drive, Radford, Va. 24141 or Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren at 3883 Alum Ridge Road, Northwest, Floyd, Va. 24091.
