Donald Landreth Obituary

On December 16, 2009, Donald Clyde Landreth, 78, of Abingdon, Va., continued his spiritual journey. We celebrate his life, his commitment of service to his country, his passion for scouting, and during the final years of his time on earth, the love for his grandchildren. He was born December 22, 1930, in Bartley, W.Va. and was a son of the late Jessie Dillard and Marie Mitchum Landreth. He retired from Appalachian Power Company in 1992 with 43 years of service. He had served with the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and retired from Navy Reserves. He was an active leader in Boy Scouts of America since 1958 when he organized a Boy Scout troop in a rural area of Washington County and was currently serving on the Executive Board of the Sequoyah Council. He received the Pioneer Award, the Silver Beaver Award and the James E. West Fellowship Award. He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Landreth, of Bluefield, W.Va.; and a niece, Anna Marie Landreth Rodriguez, of Ft. Worth, Texas. Survivors are his wife, Shirley Grubb Landreth; two sons, Mark Landreth and wife, Karen, of Mooresville, N.C., and Clyde Landreth and wife, Pam, of Catawba, Va.; his grandchildren, Kasey, Andrew and Taylor Landreth; his brother, Larry Landreth and wife, Charlotte, of Powell, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Roxanna Landreth, of Bluefield, W.Va.; nephews, Dick Landreth, of Bluefield, Va., and David Landreth, of Knoxville, Tenn.; niece, Tracy Landreth Copley, of Bluefield, W.Va.; and an aunt, Mildred Williams, of Shawsville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2009, at Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter Weikel and the Rev. Nicole Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 256, 5950 Newport Road, Catawba, Va. 24070, of which his son, Clyde, serves as Scoutmaster and his grandson, Andrew, is a member; or to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main St., Abingdon, Va. 24210. Those wishing to express sympathy online may do so by visiting www.farrisfuneralservice.com and signing the online guestbook. Farris Funeral Service, 427 E.
