Dear Meredith Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time and the days ahead. I remember Don as a friend who always had a beautiful smile and a story to share. He was a unique individual who always remembered his roots and cared about his community. It is definitely a loss for everyone who knew him. It is a blessing that we do have the memories we can cherish as we reflect on the past and look forward to the future. May God bless and keep us in his care.

I pray for the Meredith family. I pray God will give each one peace and comfort. Don Meredith was the BEST of the BEST. My kids didnt play basketball at LB but I had friends who did. I attended just about all the games. Don made basketball a great experience for the boys, fans and entire school. I think the fans came just to watch Don. Those days were the best days of LB's history. 1984- 1990. My grandson plays now at LB. There is no comparrison. The program definately is missing something and I think it has to be they need another "Don". That may not ever happen. He is one in a life time. If you knew him and experienced him, consider yourself lucky. Botetourt is sad by his loss. God Bless him.

January 13, 2010

My prayers are with your family. Dandy Don always had a story to tell me and a hall pass to get me to the next class if the story took to long. He was a great coach to play for and to watch. He will be remembered by all who knew him and missed.

Mr. Meredith was the Football Coach and Golf Coach at my high school in Bedford, Va.....Liberty High...in 65-66. Here is what the handbook had to say that year about the football/golf teams and Mr. Meredith which I just sent to all my class members from the Class of 1966 from Bedford...we've all just been e-mailing each other about him and we all remember the place he had in Bedford's football and sports history! Here it is: "The Minutemen's Football Team began practice
> on August 16 in prep for its 1st game against
> Brookville on Sept 3rd here at Liberty. It is hoped that
> everyone that can possibly do so will attend all of our
> football games, particularly our first home game! This
> year's team tarts out very willing and able. Coaches
> are: Mr. Saylor, Mr. Meredith, Mr. Black, Mr. Cutler and Mr.
> Worrell. Co-Captains will be selected before the first
> game."
>
> "GOLF: This year Liberty High School is planning
> eight golf matches with Mr. Meredith as the coach. Practice
> will begin following the close of basketball
> season."

My sympathy goes out to you with the loss of your loved one. Don was a good person, great coach, and has done a lot for us as a member of the Board of Supervisors. I regret he will not be here for the opening and dedication of the new library in Eagle Rock that he helped us get. He was looking forward to seeing it completed.

The Meredith Family,
My deepest sympathy. Don was my first college roommate at Ferrum and we coached at different schools in Bedford County early in our coaching careers. On more than one occasion I have commented that he was the best coach I had competed against. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Don was never my teacher, although I was at BI and LB. He went to school with my parents and always asked how they were. It was always genuine--never pretentious. As an adult, I enjoyed Tech games with him and knew him on a different level. Don loved people, sports and life. Our loss is Heaven's gain. - Lisa Conner Garnett, LB '83

What good times all had with "Dandy Don". I remember meeting him at the Coach & Four restaurant so many years ago, that I can't remember the year. Coach & Four had a regular group that would meet there for drinks, laughter, gossip, and good conversation. We all have gone our own way but Don will always be rememberd in our hearts.

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Don was one of those rare souls that I will never forget. He was my coach at Botetourt Intermediate, even though I wasn't very good. He was always a teacher and very encouraging despite my lack of talent. Even when I was long gone from school I often thought of him fondly. I would occasionally see him around town or at BCC and he would always put a smile on my face. What better tribute can there be for a fellow human being.

A candle has gone out in Botetourt County. We will miss you coach. Thank you for everything you did. My prayers go out to the family.

Coach Meredith was a machine on the free-throw line. I don't think I ever saw him miss. His philosophy was, Its a FREE shot, you shouldn't miss. Noone is guarding you and you have plenty of time. Free throws make or break the game. The legend will be greatly missed.

Dear Sweet Betty, You are an angel.... I hope that the good times you and Don had will be the memories that keep you going. You worked so hard to keep Don healthy. Everyone should thank you for that. In some ways, a tribute should be made to you. As we all know, behind every good man is a darn good woman.

As for Don, everyone in our house loved him, especially Lindsay. I think of him and the wonderful way in which he motivated children. He taught them to go for what they belived in.

I thank him also for the outstanding support he gave to the American Heart Association. He never hesitated to do anything he could to help with organizing a golf tournament. He was so good at "persuading" people to GIVE.
Mark and I send our thoughts and prayers your way. Sincerest Regards, Leslie and Mark Woodie

To the Meredith Family,

My deepest sympathy for your loss. I kept stats for the LB Varsity basketball team back in the late 70's and early 80's. Yes, Coach M was very flamboyant on the court and yes, he could tell some stories as others have said, but I will remember him most as a caring person, who always believed in me and who was there for me whenever I needed him--to write a letter of recommendation for my application to UVA, to remind me that I'd better send in that scholarship application... But most of all, after my graduation from LB in 1982, he was there to lend support when both of my parents passed away while I was in college. Though it has been years since I have seen him, I will always remember him fondly, as someone who influenced my life in a positive way so many years ago. May God Bless Coach M!

To the Meredith Family,
I offer you my deepest sympathy at this time. I have always worked in Roanoke but have always lived in Northern Botetourt County of which I am very proud of. I would see and occasionally talk with Don at Maw & Paw's Diner in Eagle Rock where Don would be having breakfast some Saturday mornings with a friend, Phil Hart. He was always very pleasant and nice to chat with especially about the needs of the people in Northern Botetourt County. I feel we were very lucky to have him represent the folks in this end of the County and I'm very appreciative of his work and efforts in getting the much needed library approved and the work is well under way for a completion date I believe in March of 2010. I'm sorry he wouldn't be here to see it completed. I know all the folks here in Northern Botetourt County will put that library to good use each day! We are sadden that we have now lost Don on the Board of Supervisors to represent us. In deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time.

Dear Christie and Family,

Knowing your Dad was a wild ride! He always had a story to tell, and were they hilarious! I really got to know Don better when I came to LB to teach in the fall of '93. Before that, he was a legend. When he came to sub,he often ate lunch when I did, and he would always keep us in "stitches."

On the serious side, Don was a great guy, a friend to all, students, teachers, and the community he served, alike. It is only fitting that his many friends and family can pay tribute to him at the "Castle." I am so sorry that I will be out of town and can not be there, too, but my thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this time. Know that he will be missed very much.

You were a technically sound basketball coach who was very competitive, and humorous. But most of all you had an intense flare for the dramatic. Thanks for the teachings and memories.
