Mary Newman Obituary

Mary Virginia Newman, 93, of Salem, Va., passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010. She was born on May 4, 1916, a daughter of the late Edgar Walton and Marguerite Price Newman, of Woostock, Va. She received a B.S. Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va. She completed an internship program in Dietetics at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. She retired in 1982 as clinical Dietitian, R.D. from Washington County Hospital, in Hagerstown, Md. She did volunteer work for the local Diabetic Affiliate Association of Maryland in Hagerstown. She was a former member of the American Dietetic Association and Maryland Dietetic Association, member of the First United Methodist Church and Della Bradley Sunday School Class in Salem. She was a former member of the Salem Woman's Club and United Daughters of the Confederacy, Salem Chapter, Southern Cross. Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Marguerite Nicodemus; brother-in-law, Ben Nicodemus, of Salem; three nieces; and five nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Lotz Salem Chapel conducted by the Reverend Bobby Pickle. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private services will be held at a later date at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, the Salem Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society or Meals on Wheels. The family expresses deep appreciation to caregivers, Angela Battle, Candi Saunders, Cristal Board, Priscilla Karnwie, Betty Janney and Sarah Loving, and to Dr. Alice Inouye and the staff at Joseph Thomas Assisted Living whose attention and affection enriched the final years of Virginia's life.
