Ernie Cooksey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 3 to Aug. 8, 2008.
OLDHAM Athletic players, officials and supporters are in mourning following the death of former midfielder Ernie Cooksey. The 28-year-old passed away having lost his battle against malignant melanoma. Cooksey, who had been fighting cancer for the second time, had a benefit game staged in his honour at Boundary Park in May. The match, which saw around 1,500 supporters in attendance to watch the likes of John Sheridan, Chris Waddle and Luther Blissett in action, raised in the region of £11,000 towards Cooksey's treatment. Cooksey joined Latics in the summer of 2003 with the club in financial crisis and became a fans' favourite thanks to his all-action and committed performances. He made 41 appearances under Iain Dowie and Brian Talbot before joining Rochdale in September 2004.

Wow, I find a soccer ball he signed about eight years ago when he came to the united states, I find it while im cleaning out my room and search "ernie cooksey" online to find he ahs passed... He was an inspiration to me when i was little and just learning to play soccer. Sweetest guy in the world, and I will never forget the times we had at soccer camp and messing around in my pool with the other 2 guys with the torpedo. Thanks for the great times Earnie.

When I signed Ernie at Chesham he beat up half my team. I loved him as a lad, and I loved him as a player. I will miss him popping in for a brew, I will miss him calling for advice, but most of all I will MISS HIM. See you at the far post , Luv ya son. Bobbie

You will always live in Latics' hearts. We were singing your name in the last 07/08 game at Crewe. Look over to Spotland for the League Cup game in August, a fitting occasion. Your Oldham debut there will stay with us. Thanks for the memories, Ernie FOREVER... RIP.

Rest in peace from a Bolton fan perhaps other footballers who are prima donnas should take note about how humble life is and although I never saw Cooksey play what a genuine person he must have been unlike others.

Ernie was a shining light and OAFC saviour on the pitch in one of our darkest times.
He played with such passion and love for the game nobody could have asked for more.
Everybody talks about Legends but Ernie for me sums up the true meaning of the word!
Ernie is my Hero and future generations to come will hear the story of Latics bravest ever player.

Ernie For Oldham, Ernie For England, Ernie Forever!

Today we have lost an absolute star guy. As a Dale supporter I always knew Ernie was one man you could bet would give his all for his team. I'm sure in his life away from football he was just the same. Just so saddened when the news was announced. Ernie, you will last long in the hearts and minds of many, many people. God bless.
