The Rockford Register Star publishes free death notices that include only the name of the deceased, date of death, age, town and the funeral home handling arrangements. The notice appears one time. Charges apply for additional information.

A death certificate is required unless the obituary is placed by a funeral home.

Rates: Charges for an obituary start at $4.32 per line for two days of publication. There is no one-day, paid publication. Charges for an obituary are determined by the length and by additional services. We automatically post obituaries online unless specifically requested not to do so. The online charge is $20.60. Obituaries remain online for 30 days. A black and white photo for the two days is $35.32; a color photo is $45.92 for two days. There is no surcharge for a U.S. flag for veterans; however, the addition of a flag will result in additional line costs.

Deadlines: The deadline to submit an obituary for publication the next day is 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. The obituary desk is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 2 to 4:30 p.m. on weekends. The obituary desk is closed on holidays.

Pictures: We do not guarantee that pictures will be returned. Irreplaceable photographs should not be submitted.

Walk-in submissions: To serve our customers and to ensure accuracy, please call the obituary desk, 815-987- 1370, after 11 a.m. for a same day appointment. We will schedule appointments until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
