Leo Douglas Obituary

Leo LeRoy Douglas 1928 ~ 2008 Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and son passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, July 27, 2008. He went happily, softly dancing and singing, into the waiting arms of our loving mom, his eternal partner,Barbara. Born May 5, 1928 in the East Millcreek area of the Salt Lake Valley, he spent all but a few years of his life in the shadows of Mt. Olympus. The son of Joe and Annie Douglas, dad had a spirited and eventful childhood. His father died when dad was only 16, so after graduating from Granite High he went to work to take care of his family, and has been taking care of everyone in his life ever since. Dad loved the outdoors; many a weekend would find him fishing, hunting, golfing, playing tennis or working in his yard. His true passion was his family and he loved spending every available minute with those he loved most. Dad met our mom while in High School and their love was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 30, 1949. Barbara was the love of his life and he often referenced that he couldn't believe she picked him out of all her other suitors; he considered himself truly a "lucky" man. They had three children, whom they taught the Gospel and the lessons of life, and nurtured throughout life's struggles and disappointments. Dad was a great leader for and servant of his Lord, Jesus Christ, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions, and is remembered as a loving Bishop in the Holladay 22nd ward, a devoted Mission President in the California, San Jose Mission (1987-1990) and a faithful temple worker. During his years of service he became an avid scouter and was awarded the Silver Beaver. Dad was a great friend to most, a formidable opponent to some, and a true gentleman to all. He is survived by his children, Skip (Lauralee), Tami (Ron Feulner) and Sean (Ann), 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and his sister Millie Greaves. Preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, his parents, Joseph and Annie, his brothers, Francis "Bud" and Richard, his grandson, Jared and his dog, "Kitsu". Funeral services will be held Fri., August 1, 2008 at the LDS Wasatch Building, 11196 South Wasatch Blvd. at 11 a.m. Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services.

We were friends in the days of the Great Salt Lake Council Explorer Olympics. This was at the Awards Ceremony. Our two teams, Holladay 4th Ward and Mt. Olympus 24th Ward ?? were close competitors for the Championship. Note LaVell Edwards over my left shoulder.

In 1948, "Uncle Leo" (as he was known to my cousin, Larry Jackstien and I), along with our Dad's (Grant Jackstien and Keith Green) went on our first fishing trip to the Fremont River in central Utah (about 1948.) He taught me what it meant to really enjoy fishing! I'll never forget that trip and his sense of humor. I read his obituary with joy and gratitude for the life he lived. Thanks, Uncle Leo for a great life!

Dear Tami & Family: Must tell you how very much your Mom and Dad meant to me. They supported me through "thick and thin" and I dearly love them for doing so. Love you too Tami and trust "all is well." Lois Allen

I just want to thank your father for being such and instrument in the hands of the Lord! We moved into Bishop Douglas' ward when I was 17. I had been praying my family would one day be sealed in the temple. It was Bishop Douglas who dared ask my father if he would like to take his family through the temple. He said "yes" and so I need to thank you all for having such an inspired father. Truly a man of God. I will alway s have very fond memories of Bishop Douglas. May the Lord comfort you and bless you with sweet memories of such a loving, believing couple who will prepare the way for your family to be together forever! With love, Michelle Jensen McMaster

To the Douglas Family, Jack, Robyn and I knew Leo and Barbara as our neighbors, as our religious leader but most of all we respected them as our friends. We still drive by the beautiful home you kids grew up in close to our girls, Robyn and Caroline. Remembering those pesky but fun road shows you were involved in but the rewarding participation was worth the effort.

Leo preformed the marriage ceremony for Robyn in the beautiful Skaggs Memorial Chapel with his usual commanding, humerous, generous self taking over and complimenting the entire service with grace. What an outstanding couple and family we had the priviledge of knowing. We know of the sadness you are going through but also know of the happiness they have of being together again. Stay close to one another. Love, Dr.John and Joanne Wilson and Robyn

I will be forever gratefull for Bishop Douglas who was an incredible support to our family through very trying times. He has helped to shape my understanding and my views about life and the eternities and I could never repay. I can't imagine what my life would have been without his support of me and my family. Thanks be to God for his service.

I had the great honor to serve under the Douglases as a missionary in the California San Jose mission. I learned a great deal and have many memories of the times spent with them. Both will be truly missed.

To the Douglas children and family:

Oh how I love President and Sister Douglas. I served with them in the California San Jose Mission and have so many fond memories of them both. Their smiles and laughter were so contagious and they loved us all so much. One of my favorite memories was walking into the mission home to smell Sis. Douglas' warm chocolate chip cookies. There are no equal.

President Douglas was a wonderful man, from whom I learned much. I am and will always be a much better person because of my association with him. I still think often of my time in San Jose and my experiences with him.

My condolences during this difficult time. You are in my prayers.

I knew your dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather as President Douglas.

I served with him for nearly my entire time in San Jose as a missionary under his leadership. There wasn't a time that he didn't love to razz a missionary about their interesting looking ties. Besides the fun side of president, he was a spiritual giant of a man.

I learned to lead from President Douglas. He is very influential in my spiritually development as a young missionary. He gave me the chance to blossom as a man in the mission field.

I am eternally grateful for president and for him helping me become who I am today.

He touched many lives on his pathway through life. I feel it a blessing beyond measure to have been on the same pathway, for a time, and to have been one of those he touched for good.

May the Lord bless your family at this time of mourning.

Well done thou good and faithful servant!

President Leo Douglas was my mission president for the second half of my mission and I am so grateful for the love he had for me and for the example that he set. I remeber him as a people person, which is exactly what the California San Jose Mission needed at the time. He and Sister Douglas truly saw their missionaries as sons and daughters of God and saw the great worth in each one of them.

I completed my mission on July 27, 1988. 20 years later, on July 27, 2008, Leo Douglas completed his earthly mission. How truly blessed I am to have been a part of his life.

Uncle Leo was amazing. I could always expect a firm handshake, genuine smile, and sense of caring every time I was with him. A great example to his Douglas nephews, sons of his brother Dick Douglas. Leo was always there for us!!!
