Petronella Boot Obituary

Petronella Blok Boot 1922 ~ 2009 Petronella Blok Boot, 86, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away on January 18, 2009 in Sandy, Utah.Mother, lovingly known as mama, was born on April 18, 1922 in The Hague, Netherlands, to Franciscus and Jacoba Blok. She married her sweetheart Nicolaas C. Boot in The Hague, Netherlands on June 4, 1941. They became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1952. Together with their five children they immigrated to America in May 1956. 15 months later, her dear husband died in an industrial accident in New Jersey. A woman of great faith, and strength, she moved from New Jersey and made her home in Orem, Utah. Plans of coming to Utah to be sealed for time and all eternity were not diminished after the death of her husband. One year later on October 3, 1958, mama and papa were sealed together in the Logan Temple. She remained a widow all of her life, awaiting the day to be reunited with her one and only. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she had an unwavering testimony of the restored gospel and the atonement of Jesus Christ. She served diligently in all her church callings and was a Temple worker. She shared her testimony through many firesides with over 1,000 speaking engagements. She touched the lives of many with her experiences of World War II, food storage, faith, and endurance. She was proud to be an American citizen, her heart was full of gratitude and thanksgiving for the privilege and blessing to live in this great land. She retired from Alpine School District after 17 years of working in the school lunch program, 13 years as manager. At the age of 55, she fulfilled her dream to serve a mission for the church, back to the land of her birth, in the Netherlands Amsterdam Mission. She is survived by her children, Elisabeth (Drew) Long, Annie (F.R.) Long, of Sandy; Nic (Joyce) Boot, Provo; Robert (Lorna) Boot, Georgia; Elyn (Michael) Rasmussen, Alpine; and sister Johanna Van Meerbeek, Netherlands. She was preceded in death by her husband Nicolaas, granddaughter Kristen, and great-granddaughter Gabrielle; brothers, Henry, Franciscus and Gysbert; sisters, Jacoba and Catharina. Her family was the pride and joy of her life. Always knowing the exact number of posterity, she leaves behind 30 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Our mother led an exemplary life, Christ-like, in every word and deed. She will be greatly missed, but there is comfort in knowing that mama and papa are together again. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 11 am in the Crescent Ridge Stake Center 11000 S. 1300 E. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 S. in Sandy and also on Thursday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens. Online condolences can be sent to www.larkinmortuary.com

Grandma, I have such wonderful memories of you. When we were younger and came to Orem, the first thing we did was call you from Grandma & Grandpa Phoenix's house & then run up the hill to see you. We loved all the hugs n kisses. I wish we had lived closer so we could have seen you more often. I wish my children could have known you better. It is a comfort to know that you are finally with Grandpa again. We love and will always miss you.

To my children she was known
as "Grandma Nell" they didn't even know untill they were older she was just our dearest friend. She taught me how to love, live and grow old elegantly. Now with her Nick, the greatest love story every told. I will love her dearly forever.

We all love Nell. What a wonderful example of the gospel she was to all she met. She loved to report to Relief Society where she had spoken and what number talk she had just given. Her family was most precious to her. Nell always let us know when there was a new addition to her family, when a mission call had been received or a wedding was in the planning. Your news was our news. We know how much she loved her eternal companion and couldn't wait to be with him again. Like you, we know she is a very happy lady today. Thanks for sharing your wonderful Mama with the world and especially with the Crescent Ridge First Ward. Treasure the memories.
Love you Nell.

Nel has been on my mind quite often in the last while. She was my last mission companion before I returned to the states Christmas of 2007 - 31 yrs. ago. I recall the day my bicycle was stolen (it was a fine ouderwets dames fiets). I was sad about it. While doing missionary work in Scheviningen where her brother lived, She thought I needed a break to cheer me up so we went a few blocks further to the beach of the North Sea. We gathered small sea shells, enjoyed the ocean breeze and watched the waves roll in. I still have that little box of shells to this day. I have many other fine memories of her - mostly that she dearly loved and missed her husband, that her children and their posterity mean the world to her, and mostly that she has a strong and sweet testimony of our Savior and His restored gospel. She was so delighted to serve in her homeland and was an exceptional missionary. I am indeed humbled and blesssed to have been her companion. My condolences to all the Blok and Boot families. May we continue to be a credit to her and the way she lived her life.

Petronella is one of the most wonderful and spiritual women that we have ever met. Her testimony of the Gospel was compelling and is exemplified by her posterity. She is now united with her eternal companion and receiving the rest and rewards that she so justly deserves. We wish her well.

To my Grandmda.. I wish I had the the words to express to you the example, the life, and truth's that you have taught.. If we could only peek for a moment in to the vast assembly of the world of spirits, to see that grand reunion with your "lover" as you would say.. To see you grasped in the arms of love ones... The heart would no longer yern to feel you close, to hear you speak, to feel the love that you shared. However you have taughts us FAITH! That is what we will do, have faith in this everlasting truth that you sacricifed all to give us. All I can express is, thank you, thank you for love that only you could give, thank you for memories, thank you for hugs and kisses!!! Thank you Grandma!!! I love you!!!

Your mother was one of the most sincere, Christlike people I have ever met. She touched me as a ward member while living with Joanna and Randy many years ago. Her laughter, twinkling eyes and stories of her life made memories I will always remember.
