Suzanna Woodard (Sue) Huckaby

RINGGOLD, LA - Funeral services for Suzanna Woodard (Sue) Huckaby will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 14, 2008 at First United Methodist Church. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow reception in Providence Cemetery.

Suzanna Woodard (Sue) Huckaby was born in Ringgold, Louisiana on October 12, 1943. She attended Ringgold public schools and then Stephens College in Missouri, Louisiana State University, and Louisiana Tech University, where she earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Human Ecology.

She married Jerry Huckaby in December 1962. Jerry worked for Western Electric Company for the next ten years. During that time, they lived in Atlanta, Georgia, Jasper, Alabama, and Chicago, Illinois. Their daughter, Michelle, was born in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1973, the Huckaby's moved to Sue's hometown, Ringgold, Louisiana, where they bought a dairy farm, and Sue taught first grade at Ringgold Elementary school. Sue and Jerry's son, Clay, was born while they were living in Ringgold.

In 1976, Sue's husband, Jerry, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and they moved to the Washington D.C. area. Sue began a career as a realtor in McLean, Virginia in 1977. She became one of the most successful realtors in America. Nationally, she was ranked as the number ten realtor out of over two million realtors in the country. For many years, she was the number one realtor in Northern Virginia. Over the course of her thirty year career, she sold more than one thousand homes, valued in excess of one billion dollars. Sue was a "people" person. She loved her work, and everyone enjoyed working with her.

Once she had reached the top of her field, she was committed to "giving something back" and making a lasting contribution to society. To accomplish this goal, she endowed a professorship at her alma mater, Louisiana Tech. The Sue Woodard Huckaby Endowed Professorship.

She fought colon cancer for over four years. She lost her battle on September 9, 2008. She is survived by her husband of forty-five years, Jerry Huckaby, her daughter, Dr. Michelle Lewis of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, her son-in-law, Dr. Todd Lewis, and their two sons, Carter, age five years, and Spencer, age two years. She is also survived by her father, Scotty Woodard of Ringgold, Louisiana, her brother, Scott Woodard, her sister, Stephanie Woodard, and numerous nieces and nephews. Sue and her husband were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church in McLean, Virginia for over thirty years.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Todd Lewis of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, Ezra Carter of Brighton, Michigan, Bob Mitchell of Ringgold, Louisiana, Scott Woodard of Sherman, Texas, Jack Rivers of Downsville, Louisiana, John Tom James of Ruston, Louisiana, Dr. Allen Herbert of Ruston, Louisiana, and Tom Childs of Potomac Falls, Virginia. I am so sorry for your loss. I did not know Sue, but had read many stories of her accomplishments as a realtor. When I saw the story of her recent death, my heart sank. I too lost my mother last month to her battle with colon cancer. She was fighting it for about two years. So, I completely understand your pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time, it is hard for me to speak about my mother without tears. Take care, and know they are in a better place without pain and suffering. God bless.

Dear Jerry and Family,
We are so very sorry for your loss. Sue was one-of-a-kind! With that distinctive voice and her ebullient personality and Southern charm, she was a dynamo. How proud she was of you Jerry, and your wonderful family. She is a real estate legend and set a standard that few will exceed. A gracious lady, witty and clever, a devoted mother, wife and grandmother. May your many wonderful memories give you some measure of comfort during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with you all tonight.

I am very sorry to hear of Sue's passing. Jerry and I served together for eight years starting in 1979. Although I hadn't seen him in many years after that, I did have a chance to play in the same foursome during the 2007 Congressional golf tournament. It was then that I learned of her illness. My wife's father was recently diagnosed with the same disease so I am well aware of the great courage she showed during her battle. My thoughts and prayers are with her, Jerry and the family.

Sincerely, Ken Kramer

Always a smile, always a kind word...behind that was a wise and successful business mind that never stopped promoting her clients and her company. I served with Jerry in Congress but I think his best years were helping Sue be even more successful. My prayers are with you all and I am sure my Nancy was in the front of the pearly gates welcoming Sue.

I first met the Huckabys after Jerry was elected to Congress in 1976. I was press secretary for U.S. Rep. F. Edward Hebert, D-New Orleans, who was retiring that year. Jerry took me on as his chief of staff, a position I held with him for 16 years.
I was treated as a member of the family, and that's exactly how I feel about Sue's passing -- I have lost a member of my family. She was always there for me when I needed advice and counsel, and she was Jerry's greatest political asset. Her father, Scotty Woodard, is like a second father to me. There will always be a warm spot in my heart for Sue, who was one of the nicest, most capable people I have ever known. She will be missed by all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with Jerry and all the family. She fought a valiant fight against cancer. Now she is at peace.

Sue brought her Southern charm and a professionalism to our real estate community over 30 years ago. Her sparkle will be missed.
