D. C. Wimberly, Sr.

SPRINGHILL, LA - Funeral services for Mr. D. C. Wimberly, Sr., age 89, will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at 1:30 P.M. at the Bailey Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Tim Everett officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be in the Wimberly Family Cemetery, near Ringgold, LA.

Mr. Wimberly, a native of Ringgold, LA and resident of Springhill since 1954, died Saturday, January 27, 2007 in Springhill. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was a former principal of Sibley, Shongaloo, Springhill Jr. High School and Browning Elementary School with 37 years of service. He was a graduate of Ringgold High School, Northwestern State University; received his Master's Degree at LSU Baton Rouge, LA and his Plus 30 from Auburn University in Alabama. He was a veteran of World War II and a POW of the US Army. He was a Past National Commander of the American Ex-Prisoners of War; was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Shongaloo Masonic Lodge and Springhill Shriner's Club and El Karuba Temple.

"On Thanksgiving night 1944, in Luxenburg, a country in Europe, the members of the German Army counter attacked my battalion, Companies E & F were wiped out. I was third platooning Sgt. Co. "E", 101st Infantry, 26th Division. I lost 46 men from my 50-man platoon. Three others and myself were captured. That night and the next few months, starving, freezing, walking over lots of Germany from S.W. Germany to N.E. Poland and back to south of Berlin, I felt, and to this day feel, I am living on borrowed time. I have assisted my fellow Americans as a school teacher, administrator, Mason and Shriner, dedicating my life to the Christian effort of "helping those who cannot help themselves". This is also the motto of American Ex-Prisoners of War."

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mrs. Inez Gamble Wimberly, of Springhill; daughters, Sandra W. Wren and husband, Richard, of Haughton, LA; Virginia "Bess" O'Malley and husband, Mickey, of Ball Ground, GA; a son, D. C. Wimberly, Jr. and wife, Belinda, of Bossier City, LA; grandchildren, Kim Everett and husband, Tommy; Robbie Bland and wife, Mandy; April Jones and husband, Chad; Angela Wimberly; Elizabeth Mullis and husband, Ken; Michael O'Malley and Patrick O'Malley; great-grandchildren, Luke, Bailey, Kelli, Chloe, Balend, Gracie, Abigail, Preston and Vivian; step-grandchildren, Keeth, Kyle, Melissa, Jennifer, Alicia, Deanna and Jenny; a sister, Abbie W. Fontenot of Natchitoches, LA; sister-in-law, Martha Wimberly and a host of nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Robbie Bland, Tommy Everett, Luke Everett, Michael O'Malley, Mac Pace, Bruce Blanton and Alex Edwards. Bailey Mortuary, Inc.

TO ALL THAT HAD A PART OF THERE LIVES WITH MY DAD. I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF HIS. IF HE HELPED YOU IN ANYWAY IN YOUR FUTURE THEN YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Bess, my favorite memory of your dad, DC, was when he brought you to Northwestern to visit Paula and me and to tour the college to see if it was still good enough for his baby girl to attend! I enjoyed having lunch that day, listening to him telling us about his college days, and treating us like young adults on our way into the world

I will always remember Mr. Wimberly as one of those special individuals who had a positive influence on my life as a young person growing up in Springhill. He was always an encourager. I recall that he used to attend our high school football practices in the 60's and always had a smile and an encouraging word. I am thankful for his service to our country and for his legacy.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to D. C. Wimberly, Sr. our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Mr. Wimberly. And to Mr. Wimberly it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Wimberly we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
