John, you were such a dedicated, inspired and intentional young man. Even in high school. My brother and I loved to care for you as a high school athlete and as a Navy Seal. We loved your parents and you. It was a tragic day hearing of your death. Your funeral was beautiful and impactful. RIP and thank you for your service and your life.

John is in Paradise now, but his life was one of dignity and accomplishments! His list of medals is remarkable!
I had the honor of being at his funeral at Ft. Snelling, and will never forget the love other SEALS had for him! He is gone, but we will never forget his heroism and service to America! Honor and Dignity

To the family of Special Warfare Operator CPO John W. Faas:
As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!
Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.
As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

To the family of Special Warfare Operator CPO (Seal) John W. Faas:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Fass Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

We remember you today, and always, John Faas!!! Your soul is ever in our prayers!!! May your memory be eternal!!! We love you for your warrior heart and for the way you have guarded us all. What can the protected say, but a humble "THANK YOU," to those who watch at the battle lines of death? And what can we utter, but a quiet, heart-felt, appreciative acknowledgement to his family, who with him are paying the ultimate sacrifice? Nevertheless, in some hard, audacious truth, "Your life is hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3). Eternal memory! And comfort to you, Bob & Gretchen.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Faas
Some time has passed since I attended the funeral of your heroic son, but I'd just like you to know that "gone is never forgotten." Your son has joined the ranks of Nave SEALS, which is a truly magnificent accomplishment! I've watched the training they endure, and these men are truly the "best of the best", top tier. They put themselves between the terrorists and America.
We honor you for raising such a wonderful, brave son; and we continue to pray for your family, as we honor his memory.

Dear Gretchen and Robert,
It's been a lot of years since I last saw John. I still remember him as the 11 year-old boy who retrieved and mostly returned the tennis balls that my friends and I would hit into your yard while playing Backyard Baseball, and the boy who I spent many afternoons boy-sitting for you after school (baby-sitting doesn't seem like the right word as we mostly chased each other around, played games, catch, most any sport, and generally harassed each other in a good-natured way). I remember his positive spirit and energy. I remember that even though I was the sitter that my services were requested for things like birthday parties even though they really weren't needed. We always liked each other and had fun together. From what I've read in recent days it sounds like John had that affect on a lot of people. I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of your boy (obviously he was quite a man, but I'm guessing he was still your boy to you). I can't begin to imagine the grief you must feel over his loss. I'm glad that I got to be his friend when he was a boy. I'm very impressed by the fine man he became. I'm grateful for his service to our country. And like so many, I'm grieving with you over his loss.
Kindest regards,
Debie Ball

Gretchen & Bob,
I would, or could, never think about John without remembering that I always called him "the little red-headed boy". Memories flood as I think about our boys digging the huge hole in your front yard that killed the tree...you were the parents that let their child use his energy, imagination and personality to explore the world. You let John be what God called him to be, an outstanding man of valor. I will ever forget John and his sacrifice for each and every one of us.
May the God all comfort surround you with HIS loving arms.

There are no words to express the depth of the sorrow all Americans feel for your son. He was the finest, bravest, sincerest fighting man we have in our country. We will never forget his sacrifice, his name, or his bravery. As parents, we honor you too!
Perhaps I can meet you today at Ft. Snelling to thank you personally for your sacrifice for America.
August 22, 2011
Our deepest sympathies go out to you, Bob & Gretchen, in this most difficult time. In our thoughts and feelings and even in our dreams, we are grieving the loss of your beloved John.
We are profoundly grateful for John's service on all our behalf. No words can hollow out the mystery of one man laying down his life for his friends.
"Horseman, pass by!"
We are comforted with a kind of joyful sorrow as we see John doing, with quiet courage, what he loved best to do. By doing and completing the thing he most loved, he surpassed those far beyond his 31 years.
We love him as a man of faith, as a thinker who could quote Goethe and knew the best books, who put those he knew at ease with his unusual gift of humor and humility. We remember his achievements in athletics, martial arts and physical conditioning. We will continue to honor his memory throughout our days, knowing they were in part secured by John and many other brave men like him who served and died with him on that day.
"Eternal memory," dearest family.

I remember sitting in Sunday school with this read headed kid who was in 7th grade, a bit younger than me. We were talking about what we were all going to do when we were done with school. I was close to graduation and I said "go to college take classes, major in psychology" Which was my answer to everyone because I really didn't know what I wanted to do. John said "Oh, that's coool.."I'm going to be a Navy SEAL." I asked him how you do that, and he knew...everything about the process. At that young age, he knew what he wanted to do, and did it! The last time I saw John was many years ago after he attended SEAL training. I remember asking him, "John Isn't all that training hard?" He answered me by saying, It's really hard, but that's why I like it." Gretchen and Bob...What words are there to say at a time like this. You have so much love around you and now you have your son, a protector of our country, protecting you from above! My deepest condolences.

I first met Bob & John when they came into Caps Grille. I never met a nicer young man with an amazing smile. It's hard to find words. As we go into battle I like to think of these words: The Lord is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; ..." Psalms 18:2
With sincere love, All the employees at Caps Grille.REST IN PEACE

I knew John through grade school, high school and saw him a few times after he entered the Navy. He was always a great friend to all who were around him, and had a joy that came through in all he did. He will be missed by all who knew him, and those that didn't still reaped the benefits of his sacrifice. Rest in Peace old friend.

I still remember us talking in high school about you wanting to become a SEAL - I am so proud and humbled by your determination and ability to follow your dreams and have them realized. This world will miss you immensely. Thank you for your service. I will always remember your smile. I'll see it again one day in time. Sending love and prayers to your family...
