Barton R. Humlhanz made a point of treating everyone with dignity. A friend recalled an encounter Humlhanz had in Atlantic City with a homeless man who claimed to have been a Marine. Humlhanz paused to salute and thank the man. "He had a respect for everyone," said Jennifer Lentz, "especially everyone that served." Humlhanz, 23, of Hellertown, Pa., died Aug. 26 when his convey came under attack in Babil province, Iraq. He was based at Camp Lejeune. Humlhanz enlisted in the military in 2000 _ before he graduated high school _ and wore his military uniform to commencement. He dreamed of becoming a K9 police officer after the war. He planned to marry Lance Cpl. Lauren Berelle, to whom he proposed on Valentine''s Day. His last thoughts were with her, the Rev. Timothy P. Dugan said at his funeral. At the hospital, moments before he died, Dugan said Humlhanz first inquired about the others in his unit, then asked the attendant to pass on a message: "Tell Lauren, wherever she is, how much I love her." He also is survived by his father, Edward Barton Humlhanz, and mother Michele G. Carey.
