There are so many places I go around Huntsville and I always think about our short time hanging out. The mall where we met, the playground where we hung out lol, and then that night at Publix when I met your mom for the first time. If I can ever find another man as honorable as you I will be so lucky. You were an amazing man and I know your family is so proud of you.

In May of 2010 my cousin was killed serving in Afghanistan. His widow has since set up a foundation honoring him. Every year Veteran's Day weekend a 5K is run to raise funds for the foundation. Last year they partnered with "Run for the Brave." Each participants bib has the name of a serviceman killed serving our country. This year my 8 year old son ran his this 5K (his first 5K). He placed first in his age group (27:00). Your son's name was on his running bib. He and I are both thankful for your son's service and sacrifice! God bless you!

Hello. My name is Sarah Shierling, I am 18, and I am a Senior at Oxford High School, in Oxford, Alabama. I am a member of the Oxford High School Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Honor Band.
My grandfather served in the US Army for 23 years, and served in Viet Nam. My Uncle served in the US Army for 22 years, and served in the Gulf and Iraqi Wars.
I would like to thank you and your family for the honor of hearing about Michael Paul Bridges from my band director, Chris Pennington. He stated that Paul played trombone in the band. For the last two years, Mr. Pennington has awarded the Paul Bridges Memorial Band Scholarship to deserving band students at Oxford High School who are following a passion for music. My passion has encouraged me to continue my musical studies at Jacksonville State University, Alabama upon graduation. This year, 2010, I was awarded this scholarship. I did not know Paul, but I was told that when he was in OHS, he was an outstanding music student and enjoyed and loved participating in the band activities until he moved away. My family and I would like to thank the Bridges family, and extend my sincerest condolences for the loss of such a wonderful, talented person.
Sincerely,
Sarah Shierling

Well it has been 2 years....I remember sitting next to you on that 13th of Nov and saying to myself this makes 11 days and then it was a month then a year and time marches on. I listen to your voice every day...I still have it saved on my voice mail and have had copies made. My heart breaks when I think of what you have missed and what we have missed. I am so proud of you and I miss you so much. Your brothers are grown and doing ok. I love you son....always remember how much you were loved. And I also watch the video that Brent made. Probably more than I should, but I never get tired of it. One more day if only I could have had more day.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Paul, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My heart and prayers go out to each and every one of you. Paul still remains with me in my heart daily. I am so happy that our lives intertwined all those many years ago and that my life was blessed to have had all those sweet precious years with Paul......... and to Paul, You were the most precious child I knew, you brightened my afternoons and weekends when you would visit. I will always remember you asking while I was driving with you in the backseat ,"Do you know what 4 times 4 is?".... and you replied... " it is 4 4 4 4 and that makes 16". You were so YOUNG when you did that for me and I thought YOU ARE SO SMART!! Why that little conversation still remains vivid with me today after all these years, I will never know but it is priceless and it is one of my most favorites. I loved you dearly. You are missed! I went by your Dad's home a few months ago, my sister had told me about a memorial in their yard and I just had to go, it is beautiful, but I guess you already know that........ Janice and Terry and to all the family, you are in my prayers always. Thank you for sharing Paul ( and Jason & Zachary)with me and my family so long ago.

Wow! I can't believe it's been 2 years, and I still miss you as much as I did then as I do now, I think I may even miss you more each day. Janice you have an amazing son, lol you know that....HES JUST LIKE YOU, you were right. I only wish he was here today to see Alexa I know he would absolutly love her like we all do. Paul, you are the best friend that any person could ever ask for, and I am thankful that I can call you my friend.
I met your mom, and it was amazing. She looks so much like you, it makes me remember the night we met at Parkway City Mall. You guys are so funny and easy to be with. I have adopted her into my family now and my life seems happier for it. I know you would enjoy seeing us together. I knew that anyone that could have such an amazing son like you had to be amazing herself.

Dear Paul,
Tomorrow is the second anniversary of your death. Those that are left behind treasure our memories of you and we frequently share our stories of you. Hope your ears are burning, sweetie.
Recently, your battle buddy Matt Burdick had dinner with us. We met his wife and had him share funny stories about you. We are also in contact with Josh Peltz and his wife Leah. We pray for Josh's safe return from Iraq. And Brian and Brianne's daughter Chloe just celebrated her first birthday. You'd have loved seeing her on her birthday. She is so precious.
Your dad and I cherish the continuing relationship that we have with your friends. Brian has made a real difference in our lives these past 2 years. You really picked terrific friends.
Your brothers are growing up and doing so well in college. You'd be proud of them. But of course you would only mess with them about not being as great or as smart as numero uno. Brent loves and misses you. The slide show presentation he made for you 2 years ago is still viewed frequently by Dad and me.
Paul, I will never forget the year you were stationed at Redstone Arsenal. Even if you had the knack of sneaking into the house at the most inopportune times! YOU know what I'm talking about. It was wonderful having you close and entertaining "the troops."
Carry on my wayward son. There'll be peace when you are done. . . Peace be with you, pumpkin. We love and miss you.
Love always,
Bonus Mom

I met Ms. Bridges Michaels mother on a plane last evening and I feel like I am better for it. I was exposed to Paul through his mothers eyes and I really appreciate her sharing with me, a complete stranger. God bless you all and I appreciate your sacrifice because I too served in the U.S. Army over 22 years. Remember, all gave some but some gave all. Thank you and keep the faith.

It hurts as much on this holiday as it did last year...I want you to always know how much I loved you and how proud I am of you. Not an hour goes by that I do not think of you. I went and sat on the mount that you always walked and ran to every day when you were here. I miss you.

One year....all the firsts suddenly fell to the lasts this past month and what a hard month is was for a mother...people tell me to look for signs that you are ok...I am looking!
What I would give to have you pick me up and let me put my face to your chest to "smell" you. People say that it gets easier is a bunch of baloney.
For a mother the hurts seems worse for realizing what you are missing and the memories that you were supposed to be making.
Just know and always know that you are indeed missed and someone somewhere cries for you everyday. I know your mother misses you.
Call me sometime....

I miss you Paul. So much of life was ahead of us with so many plans. Thoughts of you, me, and deanna spending time together are hurtful even though they aren't even real memories. Even writing this sends me into tears, and you know that's not an easy feat! Every time I walk into a subway, part of me expects to see you there ordering already. We had a lot of good times Pauly, but life has a funny way of being cruel sometimes. I just hope that where you are now is better then the place you left behind. Looks like you finally took the highground =) Airborne!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I spoke with you by phone when you were placing an order for a product. You shared with me your loss. Although I've never met you or your son, I wanted to acknowledge that I did visit his site on the web and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Remember God always has a plan.

I heard about you through a fellow First Sergeant, MSgt Bubba Beason, who participated in the Death March on Baatan. He shared with us how he met your mother in the lobby and how you were killed three weeks before coming home. Your story means a lot to us fellow service members left behind. I'm proud to serve with you and honor you for making the ultimate sacrifice, your life. May God continue to build your family up. May they continue to tell your story.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I had the priviledge of attending a luncheon 2 days ago in honor of Paul and to comfort his mom Janice. I never met Paul in person, but the pictures and stories shared during lunch were incredible and inspirational to me. This remarkable young man truly desired to serve his country. When his mom told us that he lost 119lbs to be able to join the Army, I was in awe. He will be my inspiration. Janice and family, you have raised an incredible young man and can be truly proud of Paul. HE IS A HERO. As a mother of a soldier that just came back from Iraq, I say thank you. We lost someone awesome in the MILITARY FAMILY, but Paul left behind a legacy. I learned so much about him during the lunch, all I can say is thanks for giving the ultimate sacrifice.
May God hold you, the family and friends in the palm of HIS hands during this time of grief. May the pride you can take in what Paul has done in his short life comfort you.
My prayers are with you daily, i pray for you by name, just like I used to pray for Paul daily.
Janice, thank you for sharing some of your memories.
Love in Christ

I only saw pictures of Michael and his brothers at work with Janice; but, she often talked about how proud she was of the "special" work that Michael did as she is proud of all of her family. If Michael was anything like his Momma Janice, he was a sweet and personable young man. He must have been because Michael shared the same unbending committment to the U. S. Army on the military side that his mother, Janice shares with the Dept. of the Army as a soldier on the civilian side. In every prayer that I utter, I ask God to protect our soldiers wherever they are, far and near. May God continue to keep HIS arms around Janice and the boys as well as all the family by which Michael will surely be missed. We Love You Janice and Go forth in God's Strength.
