Daniel R. Olsen's mother thinks her son - after growing up with an older and a younger sister - was drawn to the company and camaraderie other men. "I think it worked for him. It was a way not to stand out," Gwen Olsen said. "He found a home with the Marines. He was with a group he respected and enjoyed." Olsen, 20, of Eagan, Minn., was killed April 2 during combat in Anbar province. He was a 2005 high school graduate and was assigned to Twentynine Palms. No matter how late he stayed out on a Saturday night driving around with friends after working at the Mall of America, he still arrived at church the next morning to help prepare for his Sunday school classes. "He liked to be part of things and helping others when asked, but he always avoided the limelight," the Rev. Tim Power said. "There was a tendency for some mischief, too." He came home during the Christmas holiday and spent some time doing his favorite things: eating pizza and playing video games. He liked to showcase his strong memory for numbers. "He impressed his sergeant by memorizing everyone's machine gun serial numbers," Power said. He also is survived by his father, Wayne.
