Adam was assigned to HHC, 4th Brigade Troop Battalion, 506th Regimental Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He was further assigned to A Company (Engineers). Adam served as a combat medic and driving an engineer vehicle during a route-clearing mission, where he and his team were looking for and disposing of IEDs. An IED exploded within 2 meters of the vehicle of the driver's side, killing Adam immediately. Four other soldiers were present in the vehicle with Adam; all survived but were injured.

Adam was posthumously awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His life was celebrated on July 29, 2006, at his high school. He was memorialized in Iraq the very same day. Adam was laid to rest with full military honors in Culpeper National Cemetery on July 31, 2006.
