Hello,

We wanted you to know that we will be honoring and remembering your loved one this holiday season. We have recently sent Care Packages to our deployed troops in his name. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Rowdy J. Inman US Army Captain.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, our family, friends and many others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

My heart goes out to your family for the loss of your dear soldier. I signed up to do a 5k on Memorial Day in remembrance of a soldier through the Wear Blue Run to Remember organization. They gave me Rowdys name to Honor. When I was looking for his story, I came across this page. I see his loved ones check this page. I wanted you to know, His sacrifice, your sacrifice, is remembered. I will be praying for you tomorrow as I walk in honor of Captain Rowdy Inman.

This is year 11 since you have been gone. Love you the same as when I first heard the news of your injury and death, still hard to believe that you are gone. the words "just a second" can become a very long time because that is all that it takes for a life to end. Love you. I enjoy all the escapades of Rowdy's while he was in the military becausse he was the same at home. Things just happened to him that would never happen to other people. The more stories the better

Since I last wrote in Rowdy's book I have lost his grandmother and his Uncle Bud. These two have been jsut as hard as loosing Rowdy except instead of just Rowdy gone I now have three gone and me still here which at times does not seem right. But for now have to go on as it is as there is no other way but to work on doing the best while I am here waiting until the right time. For it is not my time but God's time as to the way our lives work. Love you the same today as always.

My friend, my Brother and my Soldier it's hard thinking back and some memories dim with the passage of time but damn if I don't remember your smile! Remember "borrowing" your KP hat so I could get in line for wolf burgers with the KPs. Damn if that cook didn't look at me twice when I went through the line with the company later that day

I remember Rowdy like it was yesterday. He was one of the first guys I had the pleasure of meeting when I got to Charlie Company 1/505. Not only was he a great solider and person but was a brother Texan! He always had that dang Texas A&M hat on with "Iraq and Back" monogrammed on the back. Rest easy broher.

5yrs ago today was the last time that I saw you. The time has not helped I still miss you today as much as I did 5yrs ago. I still feel like you are still in Iraq and will be home any day. It seems to be easier than you will never return home again for me to hold. It is like a bad nightmare to think of me watching Jeff hand Shannon a small blue bag with your worldly belongings. That was all that was coming back that was tangable. I know that you have never really left me in my heart which is a great comfort.

As I have thought about today my son is always on my mind no9 matter where I go or what I do. I think of this as his day, it was a day that he always remembered and wanted to show respect to the fallen soldiers around the world and across generations. The last line of "Flags of our Fathers" says they did not want to be heros, they were fighting for their units as much for the freedom of others.

As I awoke this morning I thought of how I was awoken by my daughter 4 yrs ago with her fast entry into my apt and her crying uncontrolably and telling me to talk to the person on the phone. I told her that I did not want to talk to whoever it was with her reaction to who she was talking to. She then said just listen I took the phone and it was Shannon, Rowdy's wife telling me that he was gone. That he had been shot and killed. I handed the phone back to Stacee and just laid back in bed, telling her to call my brother.
It still seems so unreal but forever burned into my brain. The last 4 yrs have come and gone but he is always in my heart. I feel him with me as if he is still coming home anyday.
Thank you to all the people that have posted notes on this site. The stories that you have of Rowdy has been a great comfort to me.

To the Inman Family: This is Terry Moshier, Ben Portell's mother-in-law. I thought about the two of them all day yesterday; it still hurts. I had Mass said for them. Ben's wife, my daughter, Michelle, came with me, and we prayed for both of them.
Everyone uses the word "hero" very loosley now, to describe anyone who does good in the world. Although I admire those people, I believe that the true heroes are those who risk themselves in service to others. To me, Rowdy and Ben will always be the highest of heroes.
God bless all of you, and give you peace.

It has been almost a full 4 years since the passing of Captain Rowdy J Inman. I still find it hard to beleave that he's not right around the corner poking fun at one of us, his soldiers. I don't think a day has gone by that I haven't thought about him and the guys that I went half way around the world with. Several of my leaders had a profound impact on my life, but none as great as Rowdy. He understood that I was trying to find my place in the cav and he made me apart of his family. It all felt like a family because he cared about all of his soldiers and command alike. We were a team and as Rowdy was the quarterback. I wasn't sure how I would feel going to see his memorial when we got back home. I couldn't help but breaking down. I don't know how many people I've told his story to. I do know there are a lot more to tell. I never forget to say a prayer for him and his wife and kids. This year I will still continue to have a drink for Ironhawk 6. We will meet again one day sir, but not yet.

I remember Rowdy as always having this big grin on his face, like he was getting ready to pull the worlds biggest prank on everyone. He got me good when we jumped into the JRTC at Ft Chaffee in Nov 1991. He was one of CPT Goble's RTOs at the time. I remember the longer we went into the exercise the heavier my rucksack was getting. It was really kicking my butt and I remember thinking that it must just be old age setting in. Towards the end of the exercise we engaged the OPFOR one morning and had a running battle going on down this ridge line where we sustained a few casualties, in fact about the only ones we did sustain thru the whole thing. We were taking the rucksacks of the casulaties down to the road to load up and evac and I couldn't believe that every one of them was much lighter than mine and I couldn't figure out why I was humping so much more weight than anyone else. When the exercise was over with and we got back into the barracks to redeploy I found out why. Dumped everything out of my ruck and onto the bed and there was like a half dozen BA 3030 batteries for the PRC 77 underneath everything else. Rowdy and Sluder got tired of carrying all the extra weight and figured the old 1SG was man enough to handle the load. Every time one of them needed a fresh battery they would wait until I set my ruck down and went off to do something else and they would dive in and swap them out. I had the last laugh though when I volunteered them to stay and help out with the railload of equipment while the rest of us jumped back into Bragg. It tore me up to see his name on the casualty list. Shannon, your husband, the father of your children was an American hero. He will always be missed.

Happy Memorial Day! Our thoughts are with the family and thankful for the impact Capt. Rowdy Inman has left on this world and the men and women he took under his wing while serving our country. My husband, Sgt. Tyler Nicholson, spent his tour working with Capt. Inman. His guidance and friendship have never cease to spark up many a story!

I was lead to this guestbook today by my Dad. The waterworks started as I read through the loving thoughts expressed, especially running upon the last post. We too are expecting a boy, and the first decision we made upon finding out about our addition this past December, is that his name will be Rowdy. Names mean a lot, we want to honor his dignity and devotion. Seems Rowdy Inman truly found his calling and touched people greatly along the way. What a hero!

May 23, 2009

My name is SPC Travis Watson. I was there the day that CPT Inman gave his life for this great country. And not a day goes by where I don't think about the legacy that he left behind. He was a Patriot, Warrior, and a Flawless leader. Me and my wife are going to have a boy and the only name that came to mind to name him is Rowdy. So CPT Inman you will never be forgotten.

I was a junior officer candidate to CPT Rowdy Inman while attending Sam Houston ROTC. He was the first leader I ever had that was critical and candid with me. His mentorship and genuine desire to make me a better man, Soldier, and leader has left a permanent mark on my character. I will be deploying soon as a commander and his mentorship is not lost. His legacy lives on in me and I hope to pass on his spirit to my Soldiers.

CPT Inman, I will never forget your dynamic personality. I am eternally grateful for your service and sacrifice. Thank you for making me the Soldier and leader that I am.

Forever grateful,

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Rowdy, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

December 31, 2008

On my way into work yesterday, I couldn't stop thinking about where I was last year. And I don't know why, but I feel like I need to write about and share this honor and moving experience I was part of a year ago.

A year ago from tomorrow, on New Year's Day 2008, I welcomed home a Soldier.

I flew to Austin on New Year's Eve to make it to Ft. Hood before he did. The next day and subsequent days I had the honor of bringing home a hero.

The flight that brought him home landed at the West Fort Hood Airfield. The President was spending the holidays on his ranch in Crawford, so there was the usual F-15 protection parked on the tarmac with the plane's crews on hand. As his plane taxied by the hangers where the F-15's were parked, the crews stood tall in formation and saluted this hero as his plane went by.

I stood there on the tarmac on a typical January day in central Texas. Bright sunshine and with a chilly easterly breeze blowing the flags. His wife had asked me to lead him off the airfield. I and the honor guard saluted as his flag draped coffin came out of the hold of the aircraft. We turned and as I led the honor guard, who held this great American with a reverence that only fellow warriors can bestow upon one another, the wind dried the tears on my cheeks.

Captain Rowdy Inman was coming home. Rowdy had been a Lieutenant for me when I was his Squadron Commander for 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment on our first tour in Iraq. He had been on yet another tour, this time as a Troop Commander in 3rd Squadron.

As the procession departed West Ft. Hood, we were joined by the Patriot Guard. The Patriot Guard are bikers from all walks of life, veterans, many from Vietnam. Their mantra is "Never Again". There were perhaps 70-80 bikers out there on this very cool morning waiting for us as we left the gates of the airfield. Half of the Guard rode in front of the procession and half behind, clearing our way and guarding our flanks and rear. Rowdy would have been proud to see these Americans escorting him. American and POW/MIA Flags adorned the bikes and the entire sight was moving.

Once on the main road, I was moved again by what I saw. Even along the major four lane highway, US 190, that connects West Ft. Hood to main post and Killeen, people were pulling over out of respect for this hero. Some got out of their cars and put hands across their hearts, many saluted as we passed. Some cars on overpasses even stopped and rendered courtesy. No one passed the procession and no one interrupted Rowdy's final ride home.

Once at the funeral home, there were, what seemed like more than a hundred American Flags all being held by the Patriot Guard. I went over to thank them and they simply replied, "the honor is ours."

I had a chance to see and say farewell to Rowdy and wish him God speed on his trip to Fiddler's Green.

The service was to be a few days later, on the 4th. During the week, I spent time with Rowdy's family and we got wind that there were going to be protesters at the memorial service. Shannon, Rowdy's wife got a call. Once again the Patriot Guard. They assured her she would never see a protester anywhere near the service. We did not.

The church was too small for the amount of friends, family, and comrades who came to pay their respects. I was given the honor of being one of the eulogizers. An honor I felt inadequate to perform for this great Cavalryman. I had shared such a small amount of his life, but a time I will always remember.

Shannon received the Flag. The salute was fired and taps played. Rowdy was finally home.

Rowdy left behind Shannon, daughters Keeley and Casey, and son Gary.

I felt compelled to write this down and send it out to my friends and family. Not that we need reminders that we have brave men and women fighting for our country and freedom every day, but as we ring in another year, I would ask that you drink a toast to Rowdy and the thousands like him.

Rowdy would like that.

Shannon,

I am so sorry it has taken so long to put anything. I did not know what to say. It has been almost a year and daily I think about you guys and say a prayer for you. I can not imagine how hard this has been and everything you have had to go through to help the kids. You guys were the first I met when we got here and all your help and guidance meant the world to me. Rowdy always made the kids laugh and smile and we miss him greatly. My heart hurts for you and I pray that daily God wraps his arms around you guys and helps carry you.

Rowdy you are greatly missed. You are a true leader. Your love and care for your soldiers showed in everything you did. Thank you for all you did for our family.

NO SLACK SIR !!!

I went to Jumpschool with Rowdy and we all showed up to Ft. Bragg as Privates together. I haven't seen Rowdy since returning from Desert Storm but it was really good to see everything he accomplished. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Father we entrust our brother Rowdy to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Rowdy in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

Shannon,
It has taken me forever to sign this. My heart hurts so much for you and the kids. Rowdy was a man who would have walked through hell for our family and did. He did it without question and was proud to. I would give anything to change things for you. I look at the kids and see so much of him. I know that no matter what you go through he will always be in your heart and watching over you.

I will miss him, but I know we will all get to see him some day.

It's Memorial Day Weekend. Most people will be having barbecues and parties. Not our family. We will be thinking of Rowdy and our son-in-law Ben who was killed with him, and our nephew, Capt. Timothy Moshier, who was killed on 4/1/06.

All good young men, all with high ideals, all who died for what they believed in.

All who leave large holes in our hearts.

The Inman family will always be in our prayers.

Thank you, Rowdy, for your service.

Shannon and Stacee,
From the time I met Rowdy, until his passing my daughter has always considered Rowdy her "big brother." Kelsey was devastated to hear of the tragic loss of losing Rowdy in such a way, and yet, honored to know her "Brother" died fighting for what he believed in. Not a day goes by that Kelsey and I do not think about Rowdy and his family.
I met Rowdy in Corpus Christi, TX in 1994, through my husband at the time, James...Rowdy lived with us and always accepted me as a member of the family. To Rowdy, his family and loved ones, it was a true blessing knowing the man Rowdy was. He will be deeply missed but NEVR forgotten.

Rowdy we love and will miss you for eternity,
Keitha and Kelsey

I first met Rowdy on the parade field at Fort Hood in August 2006 when we restationed from Fort Carson. I was extremely fortunate when he received command because his Troop formed up on the same field behind mine. We would often exchange "hellos" and chat in the morning before PT. Rowdy will be deeply missed, but the part of him that loved being a soldier and a leader that I so admired will live on as an inspiration for me. My deepest condolences to his family as you will always be in my prayers.

Words are never enough when you have a loss, especially when it's someone who was loved by all that knew him.
I am the Aunt of Pfc Joseph R. Berlin, who died only 4 days after Rowdy. I was part of the Nelson family, Gene Nelson was my Uncle in law. When I was looking for our Joey I saw this handsome young man and felt grief it was very strong and I didn't know why. On my knees tonight your Rowdy will be in my prayers with our Joey. I will pray for his children and wife who are missing this special man. My nephew Joey was only 21, and his mother is my twin sister. Even though we have shared most everything in our lives, I can not take this pain away for her or you. But only our Heavenly Father can give you peace. I pray He put loving arms around all our family members that have felt this pain. I pray that the memories are treasured, stories told and retold and in Heaven when we will all be together again I meet your Rowdy and you and your kids meet our Joey. My heart goes out to the entire family, all his friends and the lives he touched. My love to all, Cheri Nelson Lineberger.

Sorry for the loss of such a great man. He was easy going, and always fun to be around. He had a high spirit and always known for smiling and cracking a joke or two. Rowdy and I worked together in Iraq during 04-05 tour. He made that tour easy on the days you were down. To a fellow Infantry brother in Arms, " Gods speed and safe travel".
I truly wish the Inman family my deepest condolance's. I pray that peace be with your family in their time of need.
