Michael Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2008.
Friends of Michael E. Thompson recalled a time they were on guard duty very early one morning when they began talking about home, hunting and music. "He began singing Waylon Jennings at the top of his voice," Staff Sgt. Tracey Friend. "Lights started coming on in the neighborhood below, and the Iraqis were coming out and saying, ''Mister, please!''" "He looked at me and said, ''Sgt. Friend, I don''t think they know Waylon Jennings,'' and for the next four hours, they were entertained. He didn''t shut up." Thompson, 23, of Harrah, Okla., was killed Sept. 18 when his helicopter went down near Tallil. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Lexington, Okla. Thompson enlisted in the Army in 2004 and joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard in 2007. He also served in Iraq. A hunter and fisherman, he volunteered to go to Iraq because the Army needed a qualified open-door machine gunner. "He was an all-American boy _ fun loving and easygoing," Friend said. "He could make you smile in the worst of times." Thompson is survived by his father, Kory Thompson; mother, Angie Perry; and stepfather, Richard Perry.

Hey Mikey, I met your father this week on a ride with the Patriot Pack and he told me your story. What an incredible young man you were and thank you for your service to our great nation. Your father is using every breath he has to tell your story and keep your memory going. It's very important to tell people their story because it helps others heal as well. Just know you are not forgotten nor has the love from your mother or father waned. Rest In Peace Michael Eyre Thompson and know that your story has now become my story to tell others.

Hi Mikey. I never met you, but I met your Dad on my way to Arlington National Cemetery in 2015 to lay my own (grand)son to rest. Maybe you met him after he crossed over - Christopher Cooper? Anyway I feel like I knew you because of all the wonderful memories your Dad & the rest of your family & friends do to keep you in their lives and to honor your memory. I'm hanging a set of your commemorative dog tags (with pictures) at My Warrior's Place (MWP) in Ruskin, Florida on Veteran's Day 2017. You may know this place - founded by a Gold Star mother in honor of her son, Corey Kowall. MWP is a very healing place on the Little Manatee River southeast of Tampa. From here we can use one of MWP's boats, canoes, or Kayaks to traverse the river to Tampa Bay & out to the Gulf of Mexico. MWP has a very calming aura. You'd like it here - as much as you liked fishing, swimming, & goofing around the water. Come visit us sometime - many spirits of our warriors lost too soon gather here for peace & healing.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Thompson Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one, Michael E. Thompson US Army Corporal. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

I thought I saw you in a crowd,
they walked like you their stance was proud.
Their hair the same their profile too,
I really thought it could be you.
Then I remembered you were gone, my heart fell flat as I walked on.
I see your face wherever I go,
guess I just thought that you should know.
Still hear your laugh and see your smile, tho you've been gone for quite a while.
I miss you more than words can say, wish it was you that I saw today.

Missing you every day MikeyMan. I remain always, your Loving Father.

Michael, Michael, Michael. How we miss you so. I'm sitting in a hotel room not far out of Washington DC and my thoughts all weekend and on this Memorial Day have been of you and who you'd be today after 5 1/2 years after your passing. We couldn't be prouder of the young fun loving handsome young man you had become. We still can't believe your gone from this earth Son. Still don't want to believe it. Know Son that I go on and every opportunity I have to share your story I do. I'll never let you or any others on Red River 44 be forgotten. NEVER. I did go by and spend some time with your Granbpa at Arlington, and I thought how I hoped him and Gramma Dini and your Papa and Memaw were all there to welcome you into paradise. All us left here on earth love and miss you so Son. You rest easy now young Hero. The time will come that we will meet again.

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

Michael,
I did not have the privilege of meeting you, but I do know your father. Kory is a living tribute to the love of a father for his son. I know he hurts, but through his pain he has worked hard to make sure all those that serve and have served receive the honor and thanks that they so richly deserve. I am better for knowing him, and I wish I could have known you. I know from how he speaks of you that you were a great son and an American Hero. Thank you, Michael. You will not be forgotten.

I am very sorry for your loss. I began my Works of Heart project for families like yours. I offer a free pencil portrait to Oklahoma military families who have lost someone in this war. It is just a small way I can say “Thank you” and “I’m sorry.” Master’s House Framing in Moore, Oklahoma, is generously providing their framing services for this project.

I would very much like to draw David for you if you are interested. Just contact me at [email protected]. My website shows my "Works of Heart" soldiers I have drawn www.amycwhitaker.com.

CPL Thompson,
You don't really know me but I know you very well. I first transferred to Oklahoma as the new AGR readiness NCO for 1-114th AVN. The first paperwork I touched was to finalize your move to the 149th. I as most AGR's did not think much of it, in the weeks proceeding I went to the deployment ceremony at FT Sill and saw you with your friends and family. SFC Smith had pointed you out to me and others that were from the 114th. I told SFC Smith I thought you were crazy for going to be a door gunner on a Chinook but like all aviators I understand the love for flying. It was that fatal night I was watching the news and had heard about the accident; shortly there after my phone rang it was a close friend of mine CPT Logsdon whom your family now knows very well. He explained to me that he was unsure if it was one of our aircraft but the process of elimination made us nervous. The next night I went to CPT Logsdon's house to help him sort through the mass amount of paperwork for you. We spent all night and a lot of stories and beer making sure everything was perfect for you. In the following days I volunteered to be on the honor guard for you and the others. All of us aviators came together to pay our respects for a job we all know is tough. I asked my wife to build me a box to place a weapon and flight helmet on for all of you, she did and it turned out wonderful. When we got to Kingston High school I went to place that box at the door and your dad came up to me and thanked us for all we do. He asked that we move the box in front of you so everyone could see it. It was tough but we all gathered the strength to make things perfect. This was not my first time of dealing with this kinda thing but it was by far the greatest impact on me. I was there when you first got home and I was there when finally rested I was proud to carry you to that spot, I didn't cry till those Blackhawks flew over and I saw your friend shake his fist in absolute PRIDE. For it is an awesome thing watching those helicopters fly. I wish I had got the chance to talk to you but your story has not gone I tell a lot of people about you from what I witnessed of your friends, family, and military record. Army Aviators are needed to maintain the skies above and protect those that fly amongst them. I am proud to have served in your honor and am proud to have known you. May your skies always be clear and your winds calm. Thank you for your service and dedication. We owe you and I will lead everyday remembering that people like you are why we do this job. You have impacted more people then most will every know. To your family I thank them for their sacrifices. [email protected]

Dear Michael,
I was introduced to you by your dad, Kory. We were sitting next to each other on the plane to Philly last September. He was wearing his cap that said Proud Army Dad and reading your cards and letters during take off. He told me he was going to get you. He talked about you for the next 3 hours and shared with me the albums of photos of you he had with him. He respected your choice to be a soldier and supported you all the way. I could tell from the stories and pictures you were more than father and son. What a gift! I brought your story of valor and sacrifice back to Santa Fe with me and tell it every chance I get. I am honored to know you through your Dad and will keep him and your family in my prayers. Thank you for your loving service. With immense gratitude, Patty

You have always wanted to spread your wings since you were a little boy. I am so very proud of who you are. Your memory forever lives in my heart and within my soul.
Hugs and Kisses to you.

Mikey, Mikey..
Words cannot express the pain we all felt when we lost you. Even though any of us who REALLY knew you, knew it was the only way you would have wanted to go. You were a soldier through and through. And fighting for this country seemed to be what you were born to do. Even in high school you were so patriotic. I remember the first letter I got from you on your first tour to Iraq. How much you hated it there in a way, but loved it there all the same. I cherish the two years we spent together and I will never forget them. They are a memory only I have now. And to be honest Im ok with that. I had some of the best times of my life with you and the "Buncombe Boys." Lol. Times I will never forget.
I thank you for your sacrifice. You are my hero. And thats no lie. I will never forget you. You are truely loved and deeply missed. Check in on me from time to time will ya? Make sure I'm doin alright. You will forever be in my heart.
See you on the other side Mikey T.

To the family and parents of Michael I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Michael, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other sailors and soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Michael and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Thompson family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Michael and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

Your loved one, Michael, has done what many men twice his age could never have done. His courage, determination and sense of purpose made him willing to stand in harm's way. He has served his country, loved his family and trusted his God. May your love for Michael, fond memories, suppoort of one another and faith in God sustain you in this most difficuilt of times. You are in my prayers.

Mikey ,when I think of you I still see that curly, blonde headed, cutie of a lil' boy with the biggest smile and contagious laugh! Thank you for serving our country and fighting for freedom. We will miss you, Mikey.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was Michael's 10th grade English teacher at KHS. He was a sweet, friendly, athletic kid, who evidently grew into a fine young man. He will be greatly missed.
