Encountering the story of Tavarus, a fellow soldier who bore my name and shared the profound experience of serving two tours in Iraq, served as a poignant reminder of the depth of impact that military service can have. Tragically, Tavarus made the ultimate sacrifice in combat, reinforcing the profound depth of my already deeply impacted perspective on war and service.
Rest in Heaven, Tavarus, and may your memory endure as a testament to the profound sacrifices made by those who serve.

Tavarus will always be in my heart for a few strong reasons. He and I are fellow Americans who both enlisted as U.S. soldiers. Jacksonville was his home, and it has been my home for eighteen years.
I admire Tavarus because he volunteered for active military duty at a time of war, even when the people closest to him asked him to stay with them. There can be no appreciation for war, but I was told that Tavarus acted on his conviction and principle of service to a cause which he believed to be worthy of his fullest effort.
I carry respect and admiration for Tavarus Setzler in my heart. Tavarus' young adult life epitomized service to others.

I will never forget your sacrifice. Always in my heart and mind on this day brother. Thank you.
On oct 2 our route clearance convoy was struck by and EFP taking the life of PFC Tavarus D. Setzler. I was gunning in the vehicle following his vehicle. I remember Setzler on this day because if my vehicle would have been targeted I would not be here today. We both were gunning and I could have easily been the target.
I will never forget you!

GreatGuns Tx Tavarus PFC is my senior herdsire at Briers Simmental Ranch. He is named after PFC Tavarus D. Setzler. I was a civilian working with the Department of Defense in southern Iraq in 2008. Our team, named Team Borlaug, was working in Maysan Province when Tavarus was killed. YOUR Tavarus will live on in my herd of registered, Simmental cattle. I think of Tavarus and pray for his family EVERY TIME I see my bull Tavarus or his many calves.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

Dear Family of Tavarus D. Setzler
My prayers go to you. Last November 5, 2007 My family stood were you stand now. Sgt. Carletta S. Davis gave her life along with several other military conrades. As a mother I tell you to look in the scriptures. The flesh tells you other things, but you stand on God's word for God sent a comforter and we have to accept these words of comfort:
Use your time to take care of the things that Pfc. Tavarus D. Setzler would have wanted. Build family relationships with kindness, gentleness, love, Self-control. Christ came to tell us about times like these. And I hope you will cling to God's unchanging hand. Get strong in Christ!! you should meet Them in the air!!!Sincerely Love you Lavada Napier [email protected]

I have an odd request, but one that I offer with lots of emotion and conviction. First, let me explain a bit of who I am and the background that led me to this request of you.
The U.S. Department of Defense contracted with Texas A&M University to provide a dozen experts in agriculture to advise them on agricultural redevelopment in Iraq. In turn, then, Texas A&M conducted a search to identify those people. I was one of the lucky ones who was chosen and subsequently volunteered to come to Iraq to provice advice and plans for Multinational Division-Center on agricultural needs of Iraq. Our territory to assess encompasses 9 provinces of Iraq south of Bagdad, including Maysan (Missan) Province, the capital of which is Amarah, and the major Army base which is FOB GarryOwen. Our team has been in country for five months. In our exactly 150 days in country as of October 26, we have been "outside the wire" 100 days. Each and every time we go out, we are protected by U.S. servicemen and women who put their lives on the line to ensure our safety and ultimately a better life for Iraqis.
In early October, three of the team members separated off from others and headed to FOB GarryOwen in Maysan Province, near Amarah. We arrived on October 4. On October 6, we were honored and humbled to attend the memorial service for PFC Tavarus D. Setzler of Jacksonville, FL. It was a moving tribute to a warrior and a hero. Many tough men openly wept for the loss of their friend, their ally, their hero. While the three of us did not meet PFC Setzler, we were deeply moved by the memorial service. I vowed then to do something to honor Tavarus. The newspaper account of his funeral in Jacksonville says he was known among friends there as "Nuk Nuk." His friends here called him "Setz." His friends recalled his quiet demeanor punctuated by laughter and teasing and comraderie as he warmed to people and took them into his fold. He was indeed loved by his fellow soldiers.
Now, back to my vow: I am a professor in a department focusing on agriculture. I also raise registered, fullblood, full Fleckvieh-strain Simmental cattle. Last week, I bought a new herd sire. He was unnamed. I bought him from one of the most highly-regarded Fleckvieh Simmental herds in the western hemisphere--from Great Guns Texas Fleckvieh Simmentals. I have requested that he be named as follows:
Great Guns TX Tavarus PFC.
He will be my herd sire for several years. I hope that he will have numerous offspring that will be registered in the herdbook of the American Simmental Association. Their sire will be "Tavarus."
As they have offspring and are registered, the offspring will have as a grandsire "Tavarus."
I realize that this may seem a bit weird or even disrespectful--to have a bull named after your son. I hope that you will approve my request. I can and will change his name if you would prefer that I not recognize your son, fiance, fellow church member in this way.
Finally, please know that Tavarus's life was NOT given in vain. He touched many lives. He provides strength and purpose for those of us whom he touched--in ways that even he might not have imagined. His death brought home to me vividly how tough things are but have important they are that we continue our efforts until we have what I believe Tavarus wanted--world peace and united praise of our Savior and God.
Peace,
Gary Briers

The family does not know me but I met T at FT Leonard Wood Mo with his best battle buddy and "brother" Quentin Steele. Q and T, the two smartest, funniest, and most motivated battles. A week before him and Q shipped we all sat in the PX drinking ice coffee and laughing at the life of a Private especially at basic training. There was no fear then for the two to be going to Iraq. Just to do their job and come back home. Now I sit and look at the picture of my fallen brother and battle buddy. I am humbled. I ask that the Lord continue to bless his family and his fiance. I am grateful for the angel that I was blessed to meet. He has encouraged me to look to the Lord for my strength for so many times I have forgotten who my Father was. Thank you Tavarus aka T.. you will be missed by us all........

Everyone knows that GOD doesn't make any mistakes! We all know that many are called, but only a FEW are chosen. Tavarus may not be here in the physical, but his "Spirit" is certainly around the ones that he loved as well as those who truly loved him.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Baker / Setzler Family. I had the pleasure of attending Tavarus' "Home Going Ceremony" and it was truly a home going. Everyone needs to remember that Tavarus had a "Calling" and he "Answered". Tavarus showed his bravery by enlisting in the military knowing the risk. So with that, I thank him!
Sometimes you wonder about where our love ones will spend eternity, and with Tavarus, we don't have to wonder. If you knew Tavarus, you know that he is "Sitting Up High" SMILING down on us!
There's not one bad thing that anyone can say about him; but there are a few GOOD things that I can say:
A Christian / Man Of God
A Gentleman
Brave
Faithful
Honest
Loved
Happy
Dedicated
Diligent
Hardworking
Respected & Respectful
Protector

To the family and parents of Tavarus I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. Tavarus , I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other sailors and soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Tavarus and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Setzler family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Tavarus and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

Lil Mary, Shawn, and Princess and all the Family:
I am sadden to learn of your lost. I pray that God will carry you through these trying times. I am pround of PVT Setzler. You are to be commended for the great job you did. People say, nothing good comes out of Hollybrook Apts. But you are an example. My son also in in Iraq, this is his second tour. Those boys could have made other choices, but they chose to serve their country. To protect us. And for that I am grateful. It appears your son did the same thing mine did. But as I tell him everytime I talk to him. I support his choices as long as they are positive. So, hold your head up and be proud. "Weeping may endureth for a moment but JOY cometh in the morning. To the Setzler family,
I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Tavarus' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.
...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Pfc Tavarus D. Setzler our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Tavarus. And to Tavarus it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Tavarus, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Tavarus’s family and loved ones.

Tavarus man it seems like yesterday I remember when we was in JROTC Color Guard at Lee together. You will be greatly missed. To the family I am deeply sorry for your lost. Know that Tavarus "NUK NUK" is in a place where there is no more pain and suffering. He is with his Maker now. We train for a lot of thing in the military, but we do not train on losing a son, a friend, a brother, an uncle, a nephew, a husband, a Soldier. I love you bruh. I know you will watch over us. Until we meet again...

My condolences to the family of Tavarus Setzler:
Even though I worked with him for a short time I came to realize that he truly was the epitome of what a strong young man should be.
Not only did he have a really big and open heart but he had a spirit with a heart of gold.
And to Tavarus's mother, I thank you for your gift of life that you gave this young man and please take comfort in knowing that he can now watch over
to protect you and your family as he did his country. We all are blessed for having been able to know him even if only for a short time.
