To the family of Col Stahlman-
He was my company commander while I served in 1st Bn Alpha Company, Parris Island as a drill instructor. I remember when I got pneumonia from one of the recruits and was hospitalized for a few days. Col Stahlman came to the hospital to check up on me. He always led from the front and always tried to motivate the recruits by telling them the story of now Medal of Honor recipient, Jason Dunham. He loved to run and we all looked up to him. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Mike was a good friend and a great Marine and husband. We first met at California Western in the Fall of 1990. I have never met a more selfless and hard-working person. I again worked with Mike at the Army JAG school in 2001-2002. Once again his work ethic and selflessness were the example for others to follow. I will miss him a lot.

To The Stahlman Family and Friends,
I read today of Michael's passing. I met Michael while we were visiting our parents in Saudi Arabia, 'home' from our respective boarding schools. He was a good person then and by all accounts seems to have continued to develop and share his gifts of intelligence, good humor, and determination with the world. I'd like you to know that he has left a long virtuous legacy in his far-too-short life. My sincere sympathy.

To Mike's family,
Mike was my boss in Ramadi, Iraq and I can say that he was one of the finest individual that I ever had the opportunity to meet. I left one week before his incident. He and I talked about any subject and I was floored when I heard the news. He was down to earth and it was just a pleasure to work with him. I saw the pictures of his two beautiful girls every day and it pains me to no end that Mike won't be around to guide and be there for them for he loved them so very much. Mike made me feel at home with the Marines even though I was Army. We liked to kid around with that Marine vs Army stuff. He wrote my last evaluation report which I considered the most honored one to have. The Corps lost one fantastic Marine. I will keep your family in my prayers at all times. SEMPER FI, Mike

To the family of Col. Michael R. Stahlman, I was saddened today to learn of his passing. He was my Battalion Commander in our class of '81 and we ran hurdles together on the track team. I always looked forward to our daily conversations during practice (hard to get that much time with the Battalion Commander). I remember him as a focused and competitive person, but not really competitive against others, more competitive with himself, to excel, to be the best he could be, and at the same time grabbing the guy on his left and on his right and pulling them up with him to help them achieve. And he was always happy to do so and just a nice guy that all wanted to be around. It was a privilege and honor to have been able to spend a short amount of time around him. I am sorry for your loss.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

To the family of Col. Michael Stahlman. It has been many years since I have seen your husband, he was actually my battalion commander during my junior year at MMA in '80-'81. I know at the time he was a young, charasmatic leader who led from the front. He was an example to follow, he actually set the example. It was with shock when I recently heard of his fate, and his giving the ultimate sacrifice for his country. I know, perusing through the comments made by those who knew him well that he continued to be the fine man and leader I remember him being. I wish you all God's blessings and comfort during these difficult times. Semper Fi, Mike! Thankyou.

I had the pleasure of meeting COL Sthalman while attending the US Army JAG Officer Basic Course in 2000 at Charlottesville, Virginia. Dear Kim, McKenna and Piper,
John, Mary Lou, Julia and Jeff,
How very difficult it is to deal with the sadness and pain felt at such a loss as this. It's clear Michael was head and shoulders above the rest, a soldier who did his duty as God gave him the sight to see that duty. What an honor to have met him. May you feel God's comfort and love as your many friends & loved ones hold you up in prayer during this time.
1 Thess 4:14-18
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Kim, When Jessica and I read the news we were shocked. Without question I had more respect for Mike and his leadership than any other Officer over a 13 year span in the Marine Corps. I left the Marine Corps just one year after coming back from Iraq, a trip that Mike had a large hand in coordinating and approving for me. I called him from Iraq and stayed in touch, and when I decided to leave the Marine Corps I specifically sought his advice and perspective. He was a leader... I could write pages with regard to what I learned from him and there IS NO job I loved more in the Marine Corps, including leading Marines in combat, than working for Mike Stahlman and Bruce Gordon at Parris Island.. ... not one function or tour... he was a good man. He spoke of you and the kids all the time.. we would stand in the hall and joke and laugh everyday. I remember admiring him for coming to work early and leaving late every day... I remember our chats walking down to do the Battalion Commander's inspection and him giving me direction and encouragement...
There are no words that can bring you comfort, only time ... I struggle with what to write even...
A year in Iraq....... in Fallujah no less, and I never lost one Marine, something that I've always been grateful for, ... but now I sort of feel like I did afterall...
Please reach out if you need ANYTHING at all... anytime....
I will never forget him....

To Kim and the girls, to John and Mary Lou, to Julia and Jeff... and to all who are hurting: I've been wanting to write something that might comfort and encourage you... and somehow let you know how saddened we are for your loss and how grateful we are for your incredible sacrifice. But as I read what others have said and how much others have lost, I honestly feel as though I'm walking on holy ground where I have no right to tread. I've not experienced the loss of a spouse nor of a child, and Michael is the only one in our extended family that I know of who has been called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice for this great country he loved. I only know that we love you, we're praying for you, and we admire and honor the man, the husband and father, the American that Michael was.
I would never want to offer platitudes at such a time. But the words to all of the verses of "How Firm a Foundation" have been such an encouragement to me when I've needed comfort. If permitted, I'd like to include just two of them here:
"Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand.
The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose,
I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”

I grew up next to Mike and the Stahlmans when we were all just toddlers. My family,my mom and I are so sorry for your loss. Mike's big sister Julie was my "best friend" all throughout childhood. I still have gifts from Jordon, Saudi Arabia and other posts they sent me. Our parents have remained friends for more than 5 decades now and at the least I hear news every Christmas of all of them. So to see Mike's name in 'the fallen' on This Week with George Stefanopoulis was shocking and terribly sad.
I remember a little boy who tagged along after us relentlessly despite what I now see as pretty bad asthma. My earliest memory is of him biting me-hard-over something Julie and I teased him about. He must have been about 2... The last time I saw him we were all in college and Julie and I and Mike went out for a wildly fun New Year's Eve in D.C. How terribly sad for him to be gone, like this.
I grew up to be a physician so I can piece together how hard these last months must have been for all his family. He certainly fought hard to come back to you. and He was obviously so lucky to have you in his corner.
We will hold Mike and all of his family "in the light" as the Quakers say.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4

To the family and parents of Michael I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Col. Michael R. Stahlman our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Col. Stahlman. And to Col. Michael , I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other sailors and soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Michael and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Stahlman family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Michael and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

Father we entrust our brother Michael to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Michael in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

To the Stahlman family,
I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Michaels' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.
...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
