Albert E. Smart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2005.
An Army reservist from San Antonio died on his second tour of duty in the Middle East from an illness not related to combat, the Defense Department said. Lt. Col. Albert Smart II, 41, died Saturday in Doha, Qatar, a key logistics hub for U.S. forces deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pentagon provided no details about Smart''s death, which occurred little more than a month after his unit redeployed to Afghanistan for a 12-month tour. Smart was a computer networking specialist assigned to the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade, based at Fort Sam Houston. He previously served in Afghanistan from July 2003 to May 2004, Staff Sgt. Raymond Soto, a brigade spokesman, said Tuesday. Soto said the brigade was trying to get more information about circumstances surrounding Smart''s death. He said Smart, who worked full-time for the brigade, was one of 70 reservists who deployed in mid-April for a yearlong assignment to help rebuild Afghanistan''s educational, public utilities and other systems damaged by fighting there. On Memorial Day Smart''s parents received numerous sympathy calls and unannounced visits from people who heard about their son''s death. "People I don''t even know have come to our house over the last day and a half," Albert Smart Sr., an Air Force retiree, said in Tuesday''s online edition of the San Antonio Express-News. The senior Smart said his son graduated with high honors from New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., and later earned a degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio. "Al was a leader," he said. "He wasn''t a partying kind of person. He was military-oriented." Survivors include his wife Natalie Smart and a stepson, three brothers and one sister. Smart is expected to be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

I was searching for you to just say "Hi" and see how you were doing. I was surprised and saddened to learned of your passing. I remember serving under your command in the Texas Army National Guard in the 1980's. You were a great leader and never asked anyone to do something you were not willing to do yourself. You always made those under your command feel as part of the whole team effort never just a piece of the team. You always brought out Esprit de Corps with those who served with you.
My heartfelt condolences to your family.

I went to NMMI with Albert and have never forgotten him. He was always the one who had his duties done first and would be helping others. I am not the slightest bit surprised to hear of his success in the military. He would have been successful at anything he chose. I'm so sorry for your loss, and wish I could have sent my condolences much sooner. He was a fine man.

I just heard about Albert's death. I went to NMMI with him and we were "Rats" in the same troop. He was sharp right off the bat and I knew, even then, he was going to go far. My deepest condolences to the Smart family.

In Memory of Albert ~ (Debra Estep)

May 28, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Albert, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Prayer for the living and those that have passed………

Oh Great Usen he walks with you now
Oh Great Spirit be with us always and give us strength
Let our prayers be heard, felt and shared
Heal our pain but do not let us forget
The smiles, the laughter, the good times
Let my Family be our strength and
Let those who have gone before us hear our prayers
That they remain by our side always and
That we remember them always
When we feel the wind and see the sun rise
And on the moonlit night when you hear
The silence or the Night Eagle (Owl) calling
And there among the stars and beyond
Let us one day see them and you Great Spirit
Let our faith in you be our strength
Oh Great Spirit be with us always

I was a fellow student with Albert at the Army's Infantry Officer's Basic Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia from April 1987 to July 1987. Albert was one of the finest men and soldiers that I have ever known. I mourn his loss and pray for God's peace to be with his family, friends and fellow warriors.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family,

I am very sorry for your loss. May God bless his soul and provide comfort to you.

He was a fine man with impeccable integrity. As a fellow Afghanistan veteran, I had the privilege to work closely with him at Fort McCoy last summer training soldiers to prepare them for combat duty in Iraq.

I hope it can ease your burden to know his immeasurable effort, most certainly, has reduced Civil Affairs forces casualties in Iraq.
