Christopher D. Winchester Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2005.
In the early days of the Iraq war, a British-Iraqi family despaired when they discovered the Jordanian border was closed. That was until they met Christopher D. Winchester. Winchester and his fellow Marines took the family back to their camp until the border reopened so they would be protected and wouldn''t have to sleep on the street. "I had sent him a wristband like the young people were around here that said, ''Saved by grace,''" said Winchester''s mother, Gail. "He gave it to the family''s 12-year-old daughter. She told him he was her hero." Winchester, 23, of Flomaton, Ala., died July 14 when his vehicle was struck by an explosive near Trebil. He was based at Camp Lejeune. A 2000 high school graduate, he was vice president of his senior class, was voted most attractive and was president of the JAGS program. He joined the Marines when he couldn''t find a job in the area. Even though he was a world away, he stayed close. Winchester called every hour to check on the family during Hurricane Dennis. His also is survived by his stepfather Greg Williams and father Al Winchester. †Army Pfc. Eric P. Woods Playing Trivial Pursuit against Eric P. Woods was no fun. "He always knew everything about everything," joked a childhood friend, Nathan Funk. Take Woods'' catchphrase _ "Let me tell you how it really is." Woods, 26, of Omaha, Neb., was killed July 9 when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Tal Afar. He was stationed at Fort Carson. At 9 months old, his parents nicknamed him Houdini for his ability to get out of any crib or car seat. At 5, Woods was taking part in wrestling meets around the state, and was in a bowling league at 6. And on summer nights when the neighborhood kids would run around pretending to shoot each other, Woods'' mother would notice how he refused to leave any kid behind. Woods graduated high school in 1997 and joined the Army in 2004. He asked his family to send toys, candy and soccer balls for Iraqi children. He also asked for items for other soldiers: foot powder, moist towelettes and lip balm. "As a medic he would hand that out," said his father, Chuck. "He went above and beyond." He is survived by his wife, Jamie, and son, Eric Scott.

Chester,

I hope you're not bothering everyone up there with your jokester tactics and that stupid cat call you use to do every 5 mins....Actually I hope you are haha. Just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you and miss ya like crazy. Feels like yesterday we were standing out from of the 3/10 CP before we officially checked in and looked at each other and said "You ready to do this?" I still believe you are here and that some day we'll run into each other....

Chris,
It's been almost 10 years and it still hurts. I try to remember all of the good times we had from Oki to Iraq. I'm back with artillery now, just on the west coast and my oh my how things have changed. I still haven't really found a way to cope with not being able to hear your voice but I keep you in my prayers. The Marine Corps has promoted me to the rank of SSgt and I still don't know how that happened lol. I sit back and think about how we used to set up those OE-254s on advanced party and no one has been able to do it they way we did. I will never forget the times we had brother. Until I receive those orders to stand by you once again and guard the gates of heaven, just know that I love you and I miss you. Love always Cutt.

I didn't know Christopher but I've come to know his sister Allison through having her son Eric in my classroom. This week we were talking about Veterans and I felt it was an honor to learn about your son. I've seen all the decals and felt I knew him from listening to stories from others who did. I'm amazed at all the wonderful comments made by others and feel he was truly a hero. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Christopher, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Chester, Marine you, Cpl Mounce and SSgt Apineru are the epitome of true Marine Heros to me. We talked about going to Talladega when we got back. August 8, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Chris, I sit here today for the first time to enter a tribute to you and Blake. It has been difficult to find words that adequately express how I feel. There is a very large void in my life without you here but as Brother Doug told me just after you went home to be with the Lord, I haven't "lost you", because I know exactly where you are. You are in Heaven more alive than you ever have been. I talk to Blake's Mother often and we share. She knows better than most exactly how I feel. We are both so proud of our boys (our Marines). We are grateful that the two of you were friends. I talk to Pang and Verstrait a lot. I love them and the rest of the guys as though they were my very own. They are coming home to visit on the 14th. It will be a bitter-sweet reunion but I know you will be right in the middle of everything. I love to hear the stories they tell me. Those guys love you and miss you so much. You were so much more than I ever expected you to be. To me, you were not only my son, you were my friend, you were my motivator, my example, my gift from God and my hero.

Love you very much. Your Bubby and Sissy miss you greatly. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't express to me their appreciation for your unselfish service and sacrifice to your country. You are always in my heart.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

To Chris's family - We are all thinking of you on this day. Here we are two months later and it still seems like yesterday. I went to visit my cousin Tricia today at the cemetary and prayed also for your Chris and Blake. They were all heroes and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers, but especially on these days, when it is so new and fresh again. Please know we are thinking of you in these times and will always have him alongside our prayers with Blake and Tricia also.

God Bless you all and Take Care

Thank you Chris for your service to your country. Thank you for your bravery. Thank you for being a proud US Marine. But most of all, thank you for being a friend to my son, Cpl Blake Mounce, who was killed with you on that July day. I talk to your mother often and I know why you and Blake were friends, you were alot alike. I love the matching tattoos. Chris, I know that you and Blake are guarding the streets of Heaven now. I know that you were a Christian and so was Blake. I am grateful that he shared his last moments with you. You boys have a great time and we will see you someday.

All of my prayers are with you and your family. I was there that day. I knew CPL. Winchester and I know he was an outstanding Marine. It is a sad day when we lose a comrade especially a comrade we know. Your son was a brave man and he will never be forgotten. God bless you and your family.

My family is praying for you and your family for everything your son has done for this country. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as we also lost our family member that day in Iraq. My cousin Tricia Jameson, a Medic with the National Guard, was on her way to your son and Cpl. Blake Mounce. Please know that everytime we have our Tricia in our thoughts and prayers that your son and Blake are also included. All 3 of these wonderful, brave people are now serving a higher power and standing proudly next to God. We will be with them again someday, but please know that we are thinking of you. What they did will never be forgotten and was never in vain. Bless you all...

To the parents and family of Cpl. Christopher Winchester, please accept my condolences for the loss of your son. My son, Lcpl. Charlie Pruitt, also serves with the 3/10, Kilo Co., at Camp Korean Village and told me about your son's death, as well as that of Cpl. Mounce. Charlie was very sad, as were all the marines in their unit. He said they were both great guys. My family and I will keep you in our daily prayers.

Chris was a true friend of my son who, served along side of him with the 3BN, 10Th. Marines at Trebil. Ryan went to Alabama on crutches to pay his final respects to his friend and a true Hero. I know the hurt. I feel the pain. May God keep all of you in the palm of his hand forever.

My son in law was the other Marine with Chris that day. Cpl. Blake Mounce. I remember Blake talking about Winchester. They had so much in common. They both had the same tattoos on their arms. These two brave men will always be remembered. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Chester will be missed greatly. We will always have the great memories of him. He has moved on to a better duty station. He has just changed jobs, that's all. Now he is our guarding angel. Mama, the rest of your boys will be home soon. We love you. Doc

I am the mother of a Marine who is stationed at Camp LeJeune. He also fought in Iraq. He told me tonight that he would be going to Alabama and Mississippi as a Represenative with nine other Marines from the Battalion.

Please know that your sacrifice is not in vain. Because of brave men like your son, so many others returned home unharmed.

My son may be one of 10 Marines who will be bringing Christopher home to Alabama. Please know that I can only imagine the pain you are going through. My heart goes out to you and your family. Thank you & May God Bless You.
