Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Bernholtz Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

This year on Aug 3rd as we observed the day we spent time with other LIMA CO families and a few Marines as well. It is always great to spend time with these men that served our contry and knew our son's too. My thanks to them, it means far more than you know. Late in the evening on the 3rd I also was able to meet with many of Eric's friends, we gathered at the cemetary to talk. Every year they are there just as they were there standing watch those three days prior to his funeral. Many are now married and a few have children of thier own. This forces me to see that 5 yrs have indeed passed. God Bless you all, God Bless the families of all our military members, and God Bless the USMC! Semper Fi...

It is hard to believe that nearly 5 years have passed since Eric was killed in action in August of 05. We miss him every day and as I work in the yard or on house projects I think of him and what he would say or do when we worked together. Often he would tell me I needed to just let him do it because I was not doing it “right”…. Each year Eric's friends gather together with me to observe his sacrifice in early August. There is a white cross that someone anonymously placed on his grave even before the headstone was in place. On those August vigils many write a message there in the twilight and some smoke a cigar too (even if they had quit previously), as sitting under the stars and an occasional smoke were things he like to do with his friends. Those that visit his resting place will often sign their names and/or add a message too. We are often surprised and blessed by where some of these folks come from to do this. We are thankful for all that have remembered Eric and have been so kind in their messages here and on the cross. I am also thankful to the Columbus Dispatch for keeping this posting in place for so long as well.

I was touched by Eric's picture, in a newspaper, as he drove bravely in a bullet ridden Humvee. i scanned it into my laptop, and that boys picture was with me for a long time until i saw his story on A&E and where I learned he walks with the Lord. I never met him but i give thanks to his Mom and Dad, who gave life to this Marine and I thank them and Eric J. Bernholtz for his service.

I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't believe. But, I do remember the time I decided to make the choice to follow Jesus and work on my own personal relationship with God. That time... was because of Eric. It is so important for people to know that Eric's life brought so much to so many.
Thank you Eric!!!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Eric, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Yesterday, at my church, Highland Baptist, our choir sang "We will never forget," as a tribute to the men and women who have died for this wonderful country. It made me think of Eric.
Thank You Eric, for the ultimate sacrifice you paid for my freedom, you are a true hero, in every sense of the word. God Bless you, Jim and Cathy, for bringing this young man up to be willing to die for his country.

Jim and Cathy, The Lord lead me to this site. I did not know it existed. I just wanted to let you know that today I am praying for you. My son Matthew is enlisting in the Air Force and I know that I need to trust God with his future. Thank you for giving me the courage to do that. You have been in my prayers since that Wednesday night at youth group when they told us about Eric. I know the Lord is showing you every day how many lives Eric touched. Lifting you up in prayer.

I watched a documentary on Lima Company with a friend who is joining the marines when he graduates. As soon as I heard Bernholtz speak, I knew that I wouldn't forget him, despite not even knowing him.
I listened as his friend's spoke of him and his lively personality, loving heart, and passion for his country.
My heart goes out to everyone who knew Lance Cpl. Bernholtz, for I am truly jealous that I never had a chance to meet him.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Eric, I just want you to know that I still think of you a lot. I have so many fond memories of when we were kids and you used to pick on me with the other boys :) Certain things people say and do remind me of you all the time. I am still so proud of you and am so grateful for your sacrifice. I'm also a little jealous of all the partying you're doing all the time while I'm down here working :) Well, anyways... I'll see you again someday. Until then I have a lot of fun memories to remind me of you. Love, Annie

Dear Bernholtz Family:
I recently saw the documentary LIMA COMPANY and was introduced to Eric's story. Just wanted to extend my deepest sympathies and respect for Eric's duty and ultimate sacrifice. I hope God gives you the daily strength and whisper of good will to carry on with your head held high. Eric was truly a hero. Though I only know his story from an outsiders point of view, in many ways he represents all service men and women...the kid from a small town that selflessly served the ideals and faith that made his character so strong. A truly admirable person. Just like all our heroes in Iraq and Afgahnistan. I hope God blesses you with a great summer and happy rest of the year. You all deserve it.
with great respect and thanksgiving,
James J.

I heard a clip from Tombstone, and Wow, how the memories started flooding in. We were out to visit you the night of Joels Bachelor party, and I think at that time we all realize that there is still a little piece of Eric Bernholts in all of us. Its really hard to believe its been almost two years. I was looking online at all the websites that have your picture on them. I see you in this nice uniform, but the Eric I remember wore shorts with paint on them and a new shirt with the sleeves freshly cut off, and I laugh every time I think about it. I miss those days, and they will always be held close to my heart!

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I wanted to share that a good friend of our family, one who watched Eric grow up along with her son and daughter lost her battle with cancer on January 23rd, 2007. I mourn for her, her husband, her mother that has experienced the recent loss of her husband and another of her daughters to the same type of cancer. But I also rejoice with her and with them all, as I know where she has gone. One of the many that is standing on that beautiful shore to welcome, her, just to the side and slightly behind Him, is my son Eric. I can see her walking up to our Lord and a great cloud of witnesses, all with arms open wide to receive her. I must stay here for now, I have my family, my wife, my son and his wife with their new baby boy, my first grandson, to support and be part of while my time lasts here. Also now, in any way I can, to be there for her husband for whom I have great respect. I have little wisdom to give him, his lost is different than my own, but I can be a friend and I can be there. But as I see her wave to us and walk toward Jesus without turning back, without longing for us here, with no pain and more joy than she can hold inside, I envy her that meeting as I grieve our parting. More partings are coming to us, it is that part of life that we often do not understand but that I am beginning to see as our final blessing from God in this life, both to receive, and to give to those we leave behind on earth. For a little while I will say goodbye Debbie! Also, thank you for that story you shared about Eric and Shawn at the rodeo as they stood in those circles as the bull was let in the ring, I smile and often laugh out loud as I remember the story and your face as you told me about it. Thanks

I think about your sacrifice every day. Nobody will ever know how much I truly appreciate your sacrifice. Not only did you die with honor, but you lived the life you should have, and there is nothing more honorable than someone who lives with dignity every day. Thinking about your sacrifice makes me cherish the ones close to me even more, and helps me strive to be a better person. Your testimony is great, not because of your death, but because of your life. I applaud you on a job well done, as I'm sure all of heaven did when you walked through those gates and heard the Father say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Always in our thoughts. Forever in our hearts.

Bernholtz family,
I am sorry for your loss. Words cannot bring a loved one back but they do keep the memories alive. As i read the enties that people have written they all no what a TRUE Hero is. I was in the Gulf War that war was a much differant war not as violent, People call me a hero but i say no a hero is a person who gives the ULTIMATE SACRAFICE THEIR LIFE for their country protecting all of us. Now your loved one watches over all of you everyday smiling when you smile and crying when you cry. Lance Cpl. Eric J.Bernholtz is now guarding the gates of heaven where he feels safe and secure and does not have to worry about his next mission for his is an eternal angel. May he rest in peace.God Bless the family.

On Holy Saturday, April 15, 2006, I attended the Easter Pageant at Grove City Church of the Nazarene, and I imagined how faith-filled Eric's funeral must have been in the church sanctuary.
I am glad that this fine, young man had a firm faith, and lived it out, obviously, every day.
I see and minister to a lot of soldiers, airmen, Marines, and rarely do I see someone with such firm faith in the living Christ.
Rest with the Lord, Eric: Rest with the Lord.

Eric,
Steve and I are getting married on Saturday, and you know we credit you as the person who introduced us. If you hadn't invited Janeen and I over to your new house for that barbeque, Steve and I may have never gotten together. Thank you for playing that special part in our lives. We both miss you so much and think of you often. You are always in our hearts and minds, and we will especially have you there with us as we start this new part of our lives. Thank you again Eric.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Bernholtz family in the loss of Eric. I did not know Eric, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. Eric my heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you. It is coming up on 7 months since you were taken. You are a hero and you will never be forgotten.

Cowboy,
Tomorrow is valentines day and I'm having a really hard time dealing with it. It's especially hard because we would have been engaged by now and planning a wedding-yeah. Well, you've been gone for over 6 months and it still doesn't seem real. My thoughts are constantly thinking of you, the memories we've shared and the future we could of had. I'm trying to move forward with life because I know you would want me to but know that I will never let go! My heart and love is forever yours. I love you with all my heart and miss you terribly!
Your mom and dad are trying to stay strong, but miss you sooo much, I can't even begin to imagine how they're feeling. I'm looking out for your family as much as I can because I know I would get an ear full if I didn't(hehe); they are in great hands though with all they family and friends surrounding them. They really are the strongest people I have ever met, you would be so proud of them. Jim, Cathy, Adam and Sarah I love you bunches. Eric, I wish you could be here to see your new niece or nephew, you would be so excited and happy.
Love you always and forever,
From your sweetness

Eric,
As I was planning my calendar at work today to attend our cousin Jennifer's wedding at the end of this month, I began to think of you and how close our family is. Through this tragedy, everyone in the Bernholtz family grew a little closer and you had a big part in that. Your Mom and Dad are awesome people and give so much of themselves to others like my family, and I am so grateful for that. I told my hippie engineering manager about your "shandals". He actually made some out of an old pair of tennis shoes, and claims he loves them. I asked him to wear them to work tomorrow so I could see them, what a freak! See, you are still making an impact on our lives. We all miss you and love you very much.

Eric,
Steve and I think of you often. He will start quoting a favorite movie of you guys, and I can't help but smile when I remembered the two of you quoting back and forth. I also have this one song on a CD of mine, and I remember you singing it all the time. I am so glad that I did have the chance to know you, and that you will always hold a special place in all our hearts. Thanks so much for the friendship, and see you in Heaven.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!
Also, the Moving Tribute is was beautiful! Cherish those memories forever!

Eric,
With each passing day, I can't help but think of you with a smile on my face. The memories that I share with you are so sweet and heart warming. I do miss you with each passing minute, and its so hard to imagine that your really not coming home. But yet it is comforting to know that you celebrated your first christmas with Jesus just a few days ago. Buddy you are in my heart and I will alway love you and share my memories with everyone I come in contact with.
You are my hero...still
Love always

It's a new year today, and we all look back on our lives when you were so very present with your humor and your confidence, as well as your great determination; and I say thank you, for you made me a better person. You never let me settle. You dreamed big dreams. Tonight I'm thinking about the time when you picked me up the first day you got your license. You had that Geo storm. You picked me up and we hauled down Holten road, never thinking about anything but how fast that car would go. I didn't think a Geo could go 110, but you did it...I was scared. But that's how you were and that's how I'll remember you: ALL OR NOTHING.

EJ,
Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. In a sense, it is Jesus' birthday. And I was just thinking about how we celebrate birthday's here on earth. We throw a big party, have all of our friends and family over, eat cake and ice cream, and open presents. Then, I thought about the fact that you have the most awesome privelege this Christmas. As much as we all miss you, it is so amazing to know that you are up in Heaven celebrating Jesus' birthday with Him. You got a personal invitation to the party! And I'm sure you are having a blast. I miss you dearly! I love you EJ.
Cathy, Jim, and Adam, I think about you often and pray for you daily. I hope that you are doing well and I wish you a Merry Christmas. I know this season is probably difficult for you without Eric, but just know that He is looking down on you from Jesus' birthday party, wishing you could be there with him, too.

Eric,
Its been over a month since you've been gone, and yet the sting is still there. Everyday I am reminded of how much you ment to me. Your friendship was so important to me and I was and am so thankful that you never left my side even when you felt my decisions were not the best. Others can truly admire that and I hope I was the same kind of friend to you. You will be missed more than words can describe. We will carry on your memory and honor. I will deeply cherish each and every memory that I shared with you. You are a Hero! Thank you so much for your ultimate sacriface. I know you will be looking out for me and I KNOW I will see you again. So until then everytime you come to my mind I will have a smile on my face knowing that you are in heaven.

Dear Jim and Cathy,
Words on paper can not begin to express what I hold deep with in my heart with wave uopon wave of wonderfull memories of your family. The joy of life, the times of songs in worship of god and then the glorious peace that flows from just simply closing my eyes to see Eric walking with his brother as a child in your back yard when they were small in Olatha. Wow, I love you so very much. Hugs and kisses. Sis (Aunt Kathy)

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy in the passing of Eric.
We can only imaagine how painful this is for you and there are no words known to man that will take that pain away, but we do pray that the knowledge that there are others who care that you are hurting can in some way bring you comfort.
We have heard what a wonderful young man Eric was and that he was so willing to share his faith with others---what a blessing for you and all those he shared Jesus with.
Although your heart is breaking, may the knowledge that Eric is resting in the arms of his Lord give you the strenght to carry on.
In Christian sympathy,
Kathy and Ron Marshall

Dear Jim and Cathy,
I cannot explain my loneliness and emptyness I feel from the loss of my brothers. I cant even begin to imagine youre pains. I do know that Eric would want neither of us to worry about him. I know that he is in a far greater place than here and I know that he still checks in on me time to time. I send my love and I will make it home to tell his story.
Love,

Jim and Cathy--I'd like to express condolences for your loss. My wife Holly is friends with Becky and Mike through the internet, and while I didn't know Eric personally, I feel, as a veteren of the Marine Corps myself, that I know the kind of man he was and how strong was the integrity of his character. These qualities are safe assumptions with most Marines. Reading all these wonderful postings confirms my assumption. My 9 year old son is always amazed when strangers approach me whether at Disneyworld, the baseball field or the grocery store and greet me with a "Semper Fi!" like I've known them for years. I explain to my son that Marines, past present and future share a unique bond regardless of age, race or gender. When one falls, we all lose a brother. I am saddened to hear he is no longer with us, but also very proud to have young men like Eric continue to honor and defend the freedoms that so many in this country seem to take for granted. In reading the postings, it is very clear that Eric was a great young man, and he will be missed much.
Godspeed-- Semper Fi, Devildog!

Dearest Bernholtz Family:
From one Military Family to another, please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. Our 20-yr. old son is a Marine and continues his service in Iraq. As a mother I can only imagine what any of you are feeling or going through.
I can only offer my prayers for each of you to heal and remember Eric as a Hero first, a beloved son, a brother, a friend, and a Man of God [not necessarily in that order].
I had to stop reading the entries in this Guest Book several times because my eyes continued to fill with tears. Sometimes tears of joy from those who wrote about the wonderful memories with Eric to tears of grief from those who expressed their deepest pain from his heroic death.
Everytime I see a headline notifying us of another fallen soldier I will remember your son. I will say a silent prayer for each of you for Peace, Comfort, and Support for the entire family.
Thank you for giving us [this great country] such a wonderful young man and for also raising him to be a God Fearing Man.
Blessings from our hearts to yours,
The Martins -
Rob [stepfather], Lori [mom], LCPL. Brandon Rehorn-United States Marines [currently serving in Iraq],

Dear Jim, Cathy and Adam,
I was so saddened to hear of Eric's death, but as I read the entries here, I see that you raised a wonderful young man. There is such comfort in knowing that he was ready to meet Jesus. My favorite memory of little Eric is when you lived in Olathe and my Eric and I went to MANC (we loved spending time with you guys during that time). Cathy, you had sent Eric to his room for some reason. You were laughing outside his partially closed door and called me over. He was sitting on his bed saying, "bad word, bad word, bad word..." Even then his heart was tender! We are praying for your comfort during this time.
In Christ's love,
Carol, Eric, Hannah, Paul, Luke and Ruth Dawson
