Ray M. Fuhrmann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 23, 2005.
As a medic, Ray M. Fuhrmann II probably saved more lives in Iraq over the past three years than most emergency room doctors. "Ray saved everybody _ Iraqis, soldiers, anybody. He didn't care," said his wife, Tylea. "He even tried to go to the Iraqi hospitals to help people who were wounded." Fuhrmann, 28, of Novato, Calif., was killed by a roadside bomb Aug. 18 in Samarra. He was assigned to Fort Stewart and was on his second tour of Iraq. Fuhrmann, who grew up in Hawaii, attended community colleges in Sonoma and Alameda counties. He married his high school sweetheart, enlisted and shipped out for Iraq, all in 2002. "He was a wonderful person. He was an asset to the community and to the country, and they are the ones who will be losers, really," said his grandfather, Ray Fuhrmann. The younger Fuhrmann enjoyed martial arts and studied aikido in Japan. Inspired by his tours in Iraq, he hoped to go to medical school and become a trauma surgeon when he got out. "When I spent time with him, I was very introverted," said half-brother Tyler Gold. "He kind of helped me get out of that."

10 years since you passed, and 14 years since I last saw you, yet your face and your voice are just as fresh and alive. I only knew the Ray that was trying to find himself while working as a painter in Novato in the Spring of 2001. We shared so many laughs and really cool moments going to Johnson's beach, Six Flags Vallejo, Petaluma, hiking around Marin/Sonoma, drinking lost of beer and some cheap wine. Man, I remember giving you a copy of one of my favorite books (The Pilgrimage) for a reading to help you get through a cold night in the woods at Annadel State Park(and woke up with a puzzled Mom and a Kid staring at you in the morning, haha). Then, there was that night going to Bear Republic when a truck flipped in front of us, and you jumped out of the car and crossed the other side of the 101 freeway to help the driver (the turned out to be just fine). I realized then that you were special, and that was a preview of the Ray that everyone here got to know later in the military. Our time together was quiet, more innocent, and just fun. I'm thankful for that. God Bless!

This April was the 10-year anniversary of the fall of Baghdad...you were there with me then, and I wish I could have called you to share stories about that frightening period that has now become fondly remembered due to the passage of time and the human tendency to forget the bad things...today is memorial day; for me it will always be 'Ray Day'. We love you, we miss you.

To the Fuhrman Family...we just saw Ray's story on the Military Channel...Combat Zone episode. Ray is the epitome of heroism...saving so many lives. You must be so proud. My son served in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2006 and 2008...we are all family...we feel the pain of your loss. May God bless you all, and may Ray live in your hearts forever. He is not forgotten.

It has been four years since that trajic day. Our family is thinking about you today and holding you in our hearts and prayers as we reflect on our HERO's Nathan, Jeremy and Tim for their ultimate sacrifice in sustaining peace not just in Iraq, but for all of us here in America. May the Peace and Love of Jesus Christ be with you always.

On another note we were sad to hear about you Dad's passing. I spoke with Mike a few times a year and when I called last December 2008 your Grandfather informed me of his passing on the December 8th. I will miss our talks and the Hawaian Coffee he sent us. Most of all I will miss that day we us to talk about him coming to Jacksonville, FL and spending time with Monica and I than taking a trip up to Ft. Stewart to see Warriors Walk and view the trees of Ray, Tim, Jeremy and Nathan. May God comfort Mike in his eternal light always. I know he is finally glad to be home with Ray.

Ray,
I just saw Combat Zone on the Military Channel and learned of your bravery at Lake Thar Thar and how five months after that you were killed in action. I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. You are the epitome of what a combat medic should be-you didn't hesitate to save your fellow human beings and did and everything in your power to defend them as well.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ray, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I see that Ray is always associated with Novato, CA. He was actually from Volcano, HI. I like to think that one of the reasons for the Novato referencem (Since I'm not aware of other people he knew there)is because he would spend a lot of time at my place when I lived there and he got a job as a painter around the same area.
The spring of 2001 was one of the best times of my life because I met him at a concert and we became GREAT friends immediately!
He was the dream buddy!
I feel blessed and very proud to have known him.
Well, I wasn't with him in Iraq but I saw his bravery here at home when a truck flipped over in front of us on the freeway and Ray jumped out of the car(ignoring the other cars still coming at full speed) to go help out the driver. I imagine that not many people would have done the same, and the WAY he did it just showed me that he wanted to help people under any circumstances and every minute of his life.
That was his purpose here.
On August 1st. of last year(2006),I lid a candle and prayed for him like I had done many times before but to my surprise, that same night (for the first and only time ever!) he appeared to me in my dreams wearing his army clothes and just being the same great Ray saying he was OK.

How do you think I still feel tot his day? :o)

Ray, I too am sorry for taking so long to write to you on here. It has been almost a year and it hurts today as much as it did the night we got the call. Chris and I talk almost daily about you. About how great of a soldier you were and how good of a man you were. I know I would give anything for you to walk through my house tracking sand again, eating lunch, and leaving everything out afterwards for me to clean up. Ray, I know Chris is hurting so badly and I wish you had some of your good words of wisdom to comfort him. You have truely touched our lives and we will always remember you.

Ray, I am sorry that it has taken me so long to sign your guest book, but up till now I just couldn't think of what I wanted to say without breaking down. I still dont think that I can ever come up with the right words from my heart. Except to say that we miss you, you were a true friend, one that I am sure I will never meet the likes of again in my lifetime. Our family has been devastated and we miss you everyday. We talk of you often, usually to tell a funny story that always starts remember that time when Ray...we have a million stories like that. I miss the way you used to make me laugh the most, and that you used to always come over and eat my leftovers with Nkrumah at lunch. My fridge has never been so full. The boys miss Uncle Ray-Ray playing with them and spoiling them all the time. Everyone misses you! There isnt a person who met you that you didnt touch their lives in one way or another. You were so brave and we love you for that.

To Mike and Tylea- Thank you so much for sharing your son and husband with us. He was the most wonderful friend that I have ever known, and Nkrumah and I will miss him very much for the rest of our lives. Please Keep in Touch!

To the Family of Spc. Ray M. Fuhrmann:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly. We lost our son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. They will never be forgotten, never able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your memories will sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Ray I am so proud to have met you. When you first arrived to Fort Stewart I was happy because I was a new platoon sergeant and I had no idea what would lie ahead of us. When the call came to deploy to Iraq in 2003 I became worried because I had a new staff and we did not have a lot of time to prepare to move. I had to trust you that you would do the "right thing". You performed with valor and upheld the standards of a true Soldier Medic. You did more than I could have ever asked of you and I thank-you for it because it is Soldiers like you who make me proud to wear this uniform everyday.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Fuhrmann,

I don't know if you will ever read this, but if by chance that you do. I want you to know that I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting "Furhmann" at Fort Stewart, Ga. You see, Ray was my son's best friend. They were stationed together at Ft. Stewart, and in Iraq twice. My son, John J. Cupples called me from Iraq to tell me of Ray. We cried together, and talked about a wonderful, funny, good friend that we had with Ray. Mr. and Mrs. Fuhrmann, it was an "honor" for me to know your son, and him being such a good friend to Jay. I know in my heart, that Jay will miss him so much, and when I spoke to Jay, he told me that he is taking Ray's job, and continue to honor his freind by finishing what Ray had started..... God Bless you both and the family, and please except my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I will miss Ray, and I know Jay will.

God Bless all our Troops...

Sincerely,
