Shawn A. Graham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2005.
When his father served in Afghanistan and then his younger brother shipped off for Iraq, Shawn A. Graham had a question: When will it be my turn? "My brother was upset that he hadn't been able to go yet," said Marine Sgt. Nicholas Graham, his brother. "He did everything he could to go. This is what he wanted." Graham, 34, born in Orange, Calif., and lately of Red Oak, Texas, was killed Sept. 25 when his vehicle rolled over in Baghdad. He graduated high school in 1989 and was assigned to Fort Worth. In 1988, he and his father, Thomas L. Graham, a veteran of the Marines, joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and was sent to Afghanistan. In 1990, Shawn went into active duty with the Marines and served for 10 years. He then moved to Texas to work for MCI in Dallas. The Marines called Sgt. Graham back to active duty for a year in 2002. He then joined the Texas National Guard and was activated in August 2004. "As hard as it is for me, I almost have no regrets," said his mother, Kathleen Graham. "I lost him, but, he was doing what he wanted to do, and believed in it."

To the family of SGT Graham,

I wrote in Shawn's legacy book back in February of 2008. It has been a long 8 years since I was in Iraq performing that patriot detail. I just want to let you know that I still wear the same bracelet everyday with his name on it. I think about him often and how grateful I am for his sacrifice. He will never be forgotten.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Shawn, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I know Sergeant Graham, when I joined Troop H, 124th Cav. I am a Veteran of the Australian Army and he took me under his wing and showed me how things are done in the US Army.
I will never forget him. I can never forget him. I did not know you to properly wear my US BDU's and he showed me. It is the little things like this, that speaks to me about a man.
Rest in peace my brother. I shall remember the kindness that you showed me. I wish that I could have got to know you better.
LEST WE FORGET

To the family of Shawn Graham,

My name is Jessica and I am in the Air Force. I served at Balad AB from Sep 05 to Jan 06. At Balad I participated on the Honor Guard. We were responsible for performing Patriot Details for the fallen. Shawn was the first detail that I was assigned to and it hit me pretty hard. I now wear a memorial bracelet with his name and information so that I never forget how much he gave for me and my family. He truly is an American Hero. I will never forget him.

I am proud to say that I have served with this Great American Hero. Shawn kept me out of so much trouble as a private. I hope to be as good of a SGT. as he was.

August 2, 2007

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they

protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they

perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus,

our Lord and Savior. Amen.

“I’ll lend you for a little while

A child of mine,” He said.

“For you to love the while he lives

And mourn when he is dead.

It may be six or seven years, or

Twenty two or three,

But will you ’til I call him back,

Take care of him for Me?

He’ll bring his charms to gladden you,

And should his days be brief,

You’ll have his lovely memories

As solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,

Since all from earth return,

But there are lessons taught down there

I want this child to learn.

I’ve looked this wide world over

In my search for teachers true,

And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane

I have selected you.

Now will you give all your love,

Nor think the labor vain,

Nor hate me when I come to call

To take him back again?”

I fancy that I heard them say,

“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.

For all the joy this child shall bring,

The risk of grief we’ll run;

We’ll shelter him with tenderness,

We’ll love him while we may,

And for the happiness we’ve known

Forever grateful stay.

But should the angels call for him,

Much sooner then we’ve planned,

We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes.

And try to understand.” -Edgar Albert Guest
