It didn't take long for Joseph A. Lucas to warm to his future wife, Heather. "We actually have been together since he was in the 10th grade, and I was in the ninth grade," she said. They both knew each other through friends and worked together while in high school at a McDonald's. "We went on two dates, and we decided from then just to date each other," she said. Lucas, 23, of Augusta, Ga., was killed Dec. 15 in Balad by a roadside bomb. He was assigned to Fort Stewart and was on his second tour. In high school, Lucas played soccer and basketball. He was easy going and well-liked. He also decided to enroll into ROTC and enlisted after graduating in 2001. He planned on becoming a state trooper. "He was a good kid," said his mother, Barbara Davis Lynce. At age 14, when his parents divorced, Joseph chose to move from their home in Maine and live with his mother, who was starting a new life in Georgia. "He was the older one, so he thought he could take care of his mother," said Jeffrey Lucas, his father, who stayed in Maine with the younger son, Jason. He also is survived by a son, Joseph Jr., 1.
