It's hard to believe it has been 19 years since you were taken from this world. I still remember your laughter and your smile. You were a great leader. It is hard to put in words how I feel when I think on you and others that we have lost. You will always be in my prayers. I know you are looking down from the heavens above and watching over your family and brothers in arms.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know David, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the Herrera Family,
I had the pleasure of serving with David in the 502nd, and while we didn't end up together in the 506th we still kept in touch. I will always cherish the memories of him that I share with Luke. I was crushed to learn of his death last year, and not a day goes by that he isn't in my thoughts. I wish you all the best, and if there's anything I can do, please let me know.

I'm the oldest of three brothers that lived down the street from david.I remember him as a little boy always admiring my lowriding truck i used to own way back in "89".We moved out of the neighborhood in "93" and never got to see David grow into the man he became. Marcos and maddi you must be very proud of the man you raised, My thoughts and prayers have been with you all since i found out.I have two sons of my own and i would be honored if they turned out just a little bit like David I remember him just as everybody has described him as "gentle".

There is no greater hero than he who gives his all in service to his brother and sister. David was an awesome friend who cared and helped you if you needed him. He was strong and followed the foot steps of his family by joining the Army. He often referred me as his cousin as does his brother Marcus. I am extremely saddenned by what has happenned but i know that atleast David is in a much better place. He was a "Rakkassan" a friend, a boxer, and now a HERO. We love you David, from all the Homeboys all over the world. Rest in Peace and may God Bless you and your family Buddy, My Cousin!!! My military career will no longer be the same without you.

My Dearest Tonya, Emma, Gabriella Lee, and the Herrera family,
We are truly sorry for the loss of David. He was a great friend of ours. In six years of knowing him, and three deployments with him, we became very close. Either in some third world country or on a golf course with Anthony, David was always there for me with advice or just to talk about the kids growing up. We remember him at all the picnics we had with the platoon, he was like a big brother for everyone he knew. The Army was more than a job or a career for Dave; it was another family in which he was proud to be part of. Well, we are proud that we knew Dave; he was a great man that we will never forget.

There is so much I couild say but I will only say this David was one of a kind not because he was an awesome soldier but because he was a man worthy of being called friend. I served with him a few years ago in Korea and it was a honor and pleasure to know him. It seems like yesterday when we were sitting around laughing and having a good time. His smile was worth a million dollars and he lived life to the fullest. The word of God says no greater gift can a man give than his life for another. My brother did that and God was smiling on him. You see he is only gone in the flesh but he is with us in our hearts and that cant be replaced. Now he is a soldier for the Lord which tells me we are blessed to have one like David watching over us. Keep the faith and keep on pressing on. God Bless You and Your family.Your brother Big Papa Pump.

Marcus and Family,
First I want to say Im not very good at writing things like this but I want you to know your brother did not give the ultimate sacrifice for nothing he did it for his brothers here in Iraq. Anyone serving here is here for the Soldier next to them as well as the Soldiers who have served here in the past and have also gave their lives protecting their brothers. Im so sorry for your loss and hope you know you can call on me for anything I have known you for a few years and we have kept in touch through out which is rare in our situation. I only met David a few times and he has left only good memories he was very funny and was full of life and laughter. Every memory I have of him makes me laugh their is not many people in my life that I can say the same too. You take care brother and remember Im here for you to call on just like David was he will never be forgotten RAKKASAN!

Words can't express the feelings that you all have been through. I am deeply sorry for the loss of David(Guerro). I sit here and it has been almost a month and I still cry and miss my best friend. He has taught me so much about the Army and about being a true friend. Tonya I want to thank you for the times that you let him go with me and Mike to the golf course, those were our times of great conversation. If you need anything, please call on me as a brother and I will help. My love and prayers go out to the whole Herrera family, I am so sorry for your loss.

To the entire Herrera Family,
Words cannot express the loss of such a wnderful young man. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. David is and will continue to be a very important person in my life. I knew David for over 12 years and although I lost touch with David I would hear things from time to time of how he was doing. I have so many wonderful memories of David. A lot of them revolve around the famous Sunday BBQ's at coaches house. I remember one perticular BBQ when I was trying to teach David to mexican dance. I had let out a Grito and coach came running thinking I had gotten hurt but it was just us getting into the music and dance. David and I started laughing. I will never forget that day and how happy we all were. That is just one of the many wonderfull memories I have of David. I just thought I would share that and let you know that David will be missed. Love, Esmeralda

To the Herrera family, I did not know David, but I know the type of person, the caliber of Soldier that he was. I'm sure he was a lot like Marcus and knowing Marcus, I can truly say the world is a lesser place without him. For Heaven is a better place now and this place, Iraq, is a better place for having him served here. I wish to express my deepest condolences to your entire family and hope you will find comfort in knowing that he will never be forgotton. He, as well as all of those who have given their all for the betterment of this world will always be rememebered and we all are better for having known them.

Dear Tonya and the girls,
I pray God is with you during this hard time. David was one of the best men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. His care and concern for others around him was astounding. I remember him pushing the soldiers to their limits during the Humvee push during the Best Assault Section Competition, which his platoon eventually won. Seeing him in action was a credit to the NCO Corps of the United States Army. I can truthfully say there has never been a finer man or NCO that I have served with. I will miss him.

To the family of David Herrera,
My family and I will keep you in our prayers. I have fond memories of David and his brother, Marcus, as we all were in the same platoon together in Korea. I served as Marcus' Section Leader and told him over and over he had to share a room with the other Team leader in the platoon but he refused. Marcus said he wanted his current roommate and that neither of them were going to move. I spoke with Marcus' roomate about this and informed both of them about the possible consequences of not changing rooms, still both roomates would not move. After realizing how well the roomates got along, I dropped the issue. Marcus' roomate was his brother David. I knew that all along, and it really was a pleasure to see a person as kind and caring about people as was David. To the darling children of David Herrera, Your father spared no expense for the safety and comfort of his family. He always put other people's needs above his own. David Lee Herrera was heaven sent, yet at the same time he was down to earth. He did everything he could for you.
God Bless You.

To Tonya and Family
I enjoyed the times we all had togetherand my sympathy goes out to you. As most people already knows David was one of my outstanding soldiers in Korea. There we became friends and family to each other. We shared conversation and tears together at times of home sickness and when we missed our love ones. David brought joy, peace and brotherhood to the platoon. I could never say or have negative thoughts of David. Not everyday you can go out and find an outstanding soldier, best friend and a brother with a heart like David. Well i found that with David and it could never be replaced in my heart. My brother I will miss you but never forget you. Rest in peace your work is done and like always a job well done.

I lived in the barracks next door to Marcus and David while we were assigned to the Rakkasans in 1998. The Herrera brothers truly were great guys. They were always eager to help a friend out and take on more than their fair share of work. Once a year we would have the "Rakkasan Reunion" when all the old Rakkasans from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam would come into town to honor our unit. Some Rakkasans from Hamburger Hill saw David prevail in a boxing competition on post. They told our commander that seeing David fight as hard as he did in the ring made them proud to be called "Rakkasans". I left the unit in 2000, but I saw David one more time in 2001 in Kosovo. It did not surprise me that he had volunteered for a deployment that most people were trying to avoid. I am proud to say that I served with David and his brother and my prayers go out to your entire family.

Tonya, I am a friend of your Aunt Shirley. I am so sorry for your loss. You and David have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Without people like you & David, our country would be minus a lot of freedoms that we hold dear. You and your family will be in our prayers for days to come.

Tonya: Although I did not know you, I did know David since Jr. High. He had to have been one of the sweetest guys on campus. I still remember the day he told me he was going to join the Army, we had a class together in college. I remember telling him good luck and God bless. He will be watching you and your precious angels from above. Be strong and have faith, God will see you through all this.

Tonya,
I don't know what to say other than SGT. Herrera was the best of the best... From the first time I met him when he was picking up Jd cause his car broke down, he treated me like family. The three of you were even at my wedding to Jd only 40 days later. He was always kind and very protective of his family, espically you and Emma. I know he's in a good place now where he can watch over his girls and look down with a big smile on his face. I know he's proud of his wifey your the best wife a man/soldier could ever want... I'm always here if you ever need anything.

To The Herrera Family,
Sgt. Herrera did not die in vain. He chose to proudly serve God and country to try to make a difference in this world. He was a hero in every sense and though I do not know you or did I know Sgt. Herrera, I am proud of the difference he did make, the way he honored God and Country and that he gave all he had for others to have a better life. God bless you all. My prayers are with you and will be with you in the days ahead.
God Bless You,
Stella Wilson

Tonya,
I never knew you or David before we talked. I could not find the words then or now to express how deeply your loss and sacrifice touches all of us. I hope that you may take some small measure of comfort in the knowledge that the country that David died protecting, recognizes him as a HERO and mourns with you. God Bless you and your family.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

To the Family of Sgt. David L. Herrera:
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.
