To the family of Lance Cpl. Adam J. Vanalstine:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Adam's name came to me in a memorial program from Camp Ramadi. He died on the same day as my son Spc. Benjamin Schuster in Camp Ramadi. I do not know if they knew each other, because Ben had only been there 9 days. But I know they are brothers now, in duty and honor and service and sacrifice. Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family, and everyone who loved him, as we love Ben.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock! And that we now know our "Guardian Angel" personally!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I just learned of Adam in the receipt of an email forwarded to me from a member of the medical staff on scene.
I simply wanted to express my sincere thanks to Adam for his bravery and service to our country.
To his family and friends , I have no words to express the feelings I share with you . I know them all too well, as I lost my 20 yr old son Lcpl Jeff Burgess USMC to a roadside bomb in Fallujah on March 25,04. The pain we share is unbearable but, I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that Adam will never be forgotten. He is a true hero.

“Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they’ve made a difference in the world. Marines don’t have that problem.” These words first spoken by Rondald Reagan are just a few of the words I spoke at my own brother's funeral in December. It seems as though they are just as fitting for Adam. To Adam's siblings: it seems that you have joined Nicole, me and so many others in a strange sister- and brotherhood where we are left to mourn our baby brothers. If you ever need to reach out, I am now to that point with my own grief that I am ready to try and help others. Please feel free to contact us. We'll do what we can to help other Marine families.

To Adam's Family: My heart breaks for you, as I know the pain that you are experiencing. My brother is another fallen hero. He lost his life 3 months ago in Iraq. I wish I had some comforting words, although I know words are of little comfort right now. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I understand your pain, and the whole country mourns the loss of Adam. The Marines only take the best, and that says a lot about what type of man Adam must have been. May you keep the memories close to your heart, and know that your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. They will never be forgotten, never able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your memories will sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.

To Adam's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

To The Vanalstine family, my heart goes out to all of you on the loss of your loved one. It is hard to give up someone so dear to us. I know because, on January 5th I lost my fiancee Sgt. Johnny Joe Peralez Jr. in Iraq. No words can ever make the hurt go away, but know that you all are in my prayers. God bless Adam and all you.
