To the family of Lance Cpl. Adam J. Vanalstine:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

It's been way to long since someone expressed their condolences for the loss of your son Adam so it's my honor today. I have two sons that served with the marines in Iraq over the past 4 years and I know first hand it was a living hell on earth for me. I will never, never forget your sons ultimate sacrafice for his country and will always pray for his and your families peace in the future.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Adam's name came to me in a memorial program from Camp Ramadi. He died on the same day as my son Spc. Benjamin Schuster in Camp Ramadi. I do not know if they knew each other, because Ben had only been there 9 days. But I know they are brothers now, in duty and honor and service and sacrifice. Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family, and everyone who loved him, as we love Ben.

I simply wanted to express my sincere thanks to Adam for his bravery and service to our country.

To his family and friends , I have no words to express the feelings I share with you . I know them all too well, as I lost my 20 yr old son Lcpl Jeff Burgess USMC to a roadside bomb in Fallujah on March 25,04. The pain we share is unbearable but, I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that Adam will never be forgotten. He is a true hero.

It seems as though they are just as fitting for Adam. To Adam's Family: My heart breaks for you, as I know the pain that you are experiencing. My brother is another fallen hero. He lost his life 3 months ago in Iraq. I wish I had some comforting words, although I know words are of little comfort right now. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I understand your pain, and the whole country mourns the loss of Adam. The Marines only take the best, and that says a lot about what type of man Adam must have been. May you keep the memories close to your heart, and know that your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Fitzgerald Family,

Even though we have never met I feel as if we are a part of a family. My daughter's financee was killed by an IED in Iraq on Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that God will hold you as close to His heart as He has held my family these past months. Maybe you feels His comfort during these difficult days.

To the Family of Lance Cpl. Adam J. Vanalstine:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly. We lost our son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. They will never be forgotten, never able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your memories will sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.

To Adam's family and friends-

My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.

They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.
