Staff Sgt. Curtis T. Howard II, today you story was remembered in a small joint American Legion/ VFW Memorial service held in Oscoda, Mi. We remembered you sacrifice to defend the freedoms of this great country. While I never knew you and you certainly didn't know me I was stationed at Balad AB, Iraq and participated in a Patriot Detail the day after you gave your last full measure in Iraq. I stood on the tarmac of Balad Air Base and slow hand saluted you as your flag draped coffin was loaded onto an airplane to take you back to your family in the United States. I saw you as a hero then and I see you as a hero today 15 years after you gave your life in the service to this great country. Know that you are not forgotten nor are the sacrifices that your family made so long ago. May God hold you and your family in his hands and may your memory never be forgotten lest we forget who's blood makes this country free and great. Thank you for your service and may you family feel some measure of comfort knowing America still remembers you heroism and sacrifice.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Curtis Tyrone "Lil Curt" Howard II US Army Staff Sergeant.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Eight years ago on February 22, 2006, three brave young men went out on a mission in Balad, Iraq.
SSG. Curtis T. Howard, II, SGT Gordon F. Misner, II, and SPC Thomas J. Wilwerth
Unfortunately, the Lord had another mission for them and called them home to be with him.
For us the survivors, our lives were crushed when we received the news and it continues each day as we deal with their deaths. Even though eight years has passed the pain and loneliness still exist.
To my son Curtis, there are days when I hear your laugh and see your smile. I think to myself what could have been, oh, you would be very proud of your kids and how they are growing up as young adults.
Continue to look down on them and guide them through their difficult days to make the right decisions in their lives. I know you and Mom were tight, which is how it is with sons and moms. Lil Sis is making her mark. I thank God for the thirty-two years we shared with you and for the lives of your fellow comrades.
May God continue to give us the strength to face each day without you being in our lives.
Love,
Dad

SSG Curtis T. Howard, II was Killed In Action seven years ago on February 22, 2006, in Balad, Iraq.
Today, I remember when I received the news and the impact it made and continues to make on me and the family. His life was always full of smiles and laughter. If he was alive today he would be very proud of his children as they grow up to be special kids. I'm sure they miss their Dad but the positive impact they make with their lives will be a reflection of him. To Staff Sergeant Howard, you not being here with us shows how precious life is and how we should treasure each day and the people around us.

On the day of February 22, 2006 our lives were changed forever. Our son SSG Curtis T. Howard, II lost his life, along with SGT Gordon F. Misner, II and SPC Thomas J. Wilwerth, they left that evening on a recovery mission. On the return trip an Improvised Explosive Device cut short the lives of these young men.
We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice Curtis and the others made for our country and for us. The war, and this loss, will be with us the rest of our lives. But rather than dwell in sadness, let us learn from his courage and strength displayed. Curtis will always be remembered and honored along with those brave men and women who have fallen in battle. But he did not die in vain.
As we reflect this day, we recall his broad smile and his laugh. There is not a day when I don't think about him, sometimes shedding some tears. But today after receiving the news six years ago, I am very proud of his life and his legacy. May God continue to give us the strength to face each day.

Curt,
Thanks for sharing this link in memory of your son Curtis. You can tell he was a wonderful young man from the pictures and memories people have shared about him. I know nothing can heal the pain you and your family has felt over these past several years, but I wanted to share with you a poem that is special to me. This was shared with me when my mom passed away. I hope in some small way you will be comforted by it too. God Bless you and your family and thank you to your son and your family for his ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Stairway to Heaven Tear Drops Poem
They say memories are golden,
Well, maybe that is true;
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried;
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.
In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still;
In my heart you hold a piece
No one could ever fill.
But now I know you want me
To mourn for you no more,
To remember the happy times
Life still has much in store.
Since you'll never be forgotten
I pledge to you today;
A hallowed place within my heart
Is where you'll always stay.
If tears could build a stairway
And heartache make a lane;
I'd walk the path to heaven
And bring you back again.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same;
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

As I reflect on the past four years after receiving the devastating news about your death. Time has moved forward but the pain of that day still haunts me. You were my only son and no one can replace you. I recall your smile and that smooth laugh. I was looking at some pictures of you; one in particular was the pose with all the tattoos. Man how you were really bulked up. I will always be proud of the things you accomplished in the thirty-two years that God gave you on this earth. I realize we all must take that path, but the void of you not being here is sometimes difficult to comprehend. On that day four years ago, the weather was clear and cold; however, today it’s snowy and cold. What a marvelous sight to see all the fresh white blanket of snow that is covering everything that it touches. This is the how God pours out his Holy Spirit on all of us. God continues to touch us daily with his Grace and Mercy. Knowing that all is well with you in God’s presence helps to dull the pain. But on this day, February 22, 2010 a day that will always be remembered, because of the impact it had on everyone that knew you. We pause on this day to reflect not so much on your death, but the extraordinary life you lived. I also remember your two soldiers that were killed with you in Balad, Iraq. Curtis, continue to watch over us as we go about our daily lives without you, although I know that each day you are always remembered.
Love,

I knew and remember Curtis from summer day camp at Logan Elementary, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was one of the counselors, and personally one of my favorites. I was best-friends with Marquita for many years until I moved to Texas and we basically lost contact. I was recalling my younger years and my friendship with Marquita,trying to figure out the best way to try and contact her. I stumbled upon this devastating news of Curtis' death and felt the need to profess my condolences, and to wish the family well. I will always keep the Howard's in my heart, they always treated me like part of the family, and I love all of them including the late Curtis for that! God Bless.
