Hi Dad,
It's me. I miss you more than words can express. I´m now 24 years old and in grad school, working towards my master's degree. I've already earned both an associate's and a bachelor's degree from wonderful colleges, and I know you´d be so proud of me. I was blessed with incredible parents, and an educated mother who has shaped me into the kind, educated woman I am today.
After you passed, a new chapter began with my stepfather entering our lives. I truly believe you sent him to us. He´s set such a high standard that I sometimes worry I´ll be single forever, haha. His father´s headstone is right by yours-how remarkable is that? He´s raised me as his own, and I´m forever grateful to him.
Sadly, I´m estranged from the family, including my own brother, but not by choice. Although I didn´t have the chance to grow up with my brother, I couldn´t have asked for a better family. I recently finished a scrapbook of the letters you wrote to me and Mom; it´s one of the most precious things I own.
Every year since you left, we´ve held fundraisers in your honor to support various nonprofits. While some may have forgotten, I never will.
I´ll always cherish you and the memories we´ve shared.
I love you, now and always

your little girl

I knew Ian when he first got to South Korea in 2002. He is a great guy who only wanted to learn and take care of his family back in NY. I didn't find out about his death till 2011 and it made me sick to know that such a great man/person was taken from his family. I feel guilty even though I wasn't in Iraq with him the same year. I know he was there for me many times in Korea and I feel as if I failed myself and him. God Bless you Mrs Sanchez and the rest of his family.

It's such a joy to have had you in my life and I thank god for a happiness I never thought I find until I met you. I gaze at our son and see a reflection of you everyday. We celebrate you, we bravely face each day to honor you by living each day the way we hoped to build together. You fought for everyone to have that opportunity to build everyday. I love you so much and though time has past that is something that will never change..your footprints in my heart shifted my life for the better and though it hurts to not have you here with us the memory of you and your essence still remains gladly. We celebrate you love.. Your jokes, your passion to uplift others, I want those that know you to fill in the rest...Let us celebrate him this Memorial Day.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Sanchez Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

June 16, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ian, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

You know I'm not big on expressing how i feel into a computer. I don't have to show everyone how much it hurts that you're gone, because you already know and that's all that counts. I was always proud to call you a big brother, you and Kasp, even before you went into the service. Now, I'm even more proud to call you my brother. Proud of your courageousness, your patriotism, your dedication to your family, friends and country. I still remember your laugh like it was yesterday, and the stacks of pancakes you would throw down in mommy's kitchen. You remember You, Anthony, Steven and Mike all rotating those 4 pairs of jeans? ha ha.. And the late night pool dips on Castleton..and the puerto rican showers; oops i mean scottorican.. Those memories will NEVER be erased. Blood is thicker than water, but that doesn't apply here because we all had a special bond that couldn't be broken even by harsh tragedies. I love you, and you will always be my brother, my hero. Always in my heart.

to my brother, Ive known you since we were babies . We grew up next door to each other and i am so grateful for every second i hung out with you. I dont think anybody could ever understand how close we truly were. We trusted each other wit everything. even when you were 9 and moved to todt hill we still hung out all the time. We are brothers and always will be. We been thru it all together good and bad. I remember diggin holes in the backyard for our gi joes and makin forts . there must be a million gi joes buried back there. I have a picture of us on my livingroom wall and we were in kindergarten at our graduation, it maskes me smile but at the same time breaks my heart cause we were supposed to get old and tell our kids all the crazy and stupid things we did together . I always looked forward to you coming out on leave cause we would chill and go out or just drink and play cards. I wanna let you know I could never have a closer friend than you and i mean it. This might sound corny but i always dream about you and in my dreams we are always hangin out like old times and when i wake up it makes me feel like we just hung out . Ill admit it bro Im still in denial .Physically your gone but in my heart and mind youll always be here cause I know well meet again . Oh yeah , I have another baby . I have another boy, his name is Nicholas Ryan Shenk and hes 9 months old and he alreay walks and he cheers me up everyday. Mikey jr is 6 yrs old now in the second grade and doing outstanding in school. I really miss you bro .I never felt as much pain as I did as when you moved on. Im sorry I havent seen your mom in so long. Im gonna go see her , I promise. Its hard to be in that apartment .I love your mom so much , shes definitely one of the strongest people I ever met and she gave you that same stength along with alot of other good traits. I just wanna let you know that you are always in my heart and my thoughts and until we meet again , I love you my brother from another mother. Im so sorry Evvy Jen Marcus Tiffany Jessenya and everyone who ever got the chance to have Ian in there life. YOUR ALWAYS IN MY HEART>>>>IRON MONKEYS FOREVER Love your big brother KASP

SGT Sanchez Family,

To the family and friends,
I would like to extend my deepest sympathies. Losing a loved on is the hardest thing in life. I am writing to not only express my sorrow for you but to let you know about a memorial I am working on. I am creating a quilt to honor the fallen soldiers from the New York City Area. Each soldier will have a panel created. I am inviting the friends and families to get involved. I am a friend of Kim's and was trying to let her know about this but I haven't been able to reach her. If you are interested or would like some more information please contact me at [email protected]

August 7, 2007

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

We've been through a lot together. You were one the most inetelligent people I have ever met in my life. We both did something with our lives by joining the military. I remember when I first got to Korea and I didn't have any money. You let me borrow money and you didn't even know me. I miss you Ian I really miss you man. Its like I lost another brother. This is hard. I'll get in contact with your family. If your kids need anything I'll help out. You have a son named Marcus. It brings me to tears. I'll never forget you. I swear on my life. God has a home for you better than anything down here. I love you man. I should of found you and told you this earlier. You taught me a lot. You'll be missed dearly.

Jen...

It has taken me months to try to come up with something eloquent that I haven’t already told you in person. I struggle even now as I look at you and Marcus and wonder if there isn’t some way I could take away the pain you have been feeling since June and continue to feel daily. The love you have for Ian is one of the greatest joys that a person could ever hope to find. You were lucky to have found that love and the love you have with Ian is amazing.

I remember the first time that we met the three of you, we were all walking in from the parking lot and Sari was being Sari and barking. I hate to admit it even now but it was funny to watch the three of you jump a little when the monster peered over the fence. But I knew I was going to like you.

Jen... you are my best friend and if I could do anything to change the pain that you feel I would. Marcus, your daddy loved you more than you can imagine and when you get old enough to dial the phone you call me and I will share some of the memories with you that I have about you and your dad. Especially the drums.

Ian, may you rest in peace and know that your mission was not in vain and know that when your family, friends and love ones look up at the sky and smile they are thinking of you.

Glen

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

It is the American Serviceman, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the American Serviceman, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the American Serviceman, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the American Serviceman, not the lawyer, Who has given us a right to a fair trial.
It is the American Serviceman, who salutes the flag, Who serves under the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag.

I am Deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Ian Sanchez. The price this young hero and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

May he rest safely in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of the Lord be with the Sanchez family.

There will never be enough ways to humbly thank these heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. KIA~Vietnam, 1967.

Ian went out of his way for his soldiers. He always joked around and encouraged everyone. Ian was truly a leader and his superiors saw the potential he had. He had a passion to succeed and was very proud to be among these fine soldiers. I pray for all our soldiers out there and extend my condolences to the families that have lost their soldiers. "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE"

I would also like to thank everyone for their support. My heart is broken and a piece of myself left with him. I love my husband and obstacles in life did not separate us neither will death. In truth it will be a long journey for me but in my heart I know that Ian will be right beside me guiding the way. I will honor his wishes as if he was standing right next to me. May he rest in peace knowing that. I will never say goodbye only that I'll see you later.

Jessenya and Marcus

Daddy is watching over you both. Daddy loves the both of you very much. His last wish would be to honor his memory by going to school, staying out of trouble and most of all respect your mothers. Daddy's last piece of advice "Do you know why we fall down? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up". He is a HERO and he worked hard to defend our country and to make sure this world was safe for the both of you.

Evelyn

The pain we share may not be similiar but our love for Ian is equal. Time may never completely heal us but we have to use this time to fulfill Ian dreams. He was the sun, you are his earth, I am his moon and his children the stars. Let's take care of our stars.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Ian Sanchez--Evelyn, Jennifer, Marcus, Jesenya, Gordon and all the aunts, uncles, cousins, friends.

At Ian's memorial at Ft. Wadsworth, my heart ached for all of you as I remember almost a year ago burying my godson and nephew, Nils Thompson, killed in Iraq 8/4/05. The tears flowed as I felt your pain of losing your dear Ian. How brave he was to leave his family, especially his children to fight for our country! Ian is now your personal angel watching over you. How fortunate that your family is connected and was there in full force. Please know that you are in our prayers, we know how empty you feel, how the tears won't stop. The memories of your dear Ian will keep you strong. God and family will help ease the pain. Sincerely from the family of Pfc Nils Thompson.

Evelyn and Sanchez Family: I am so sorry for your loss. Evelyn, it has been many years since we have worked together on B3 and EF4, and I have thought of you often over the years. I was so saddened when I heard about Ian. I remember how much you loved him and lived for him. I remember when he turned 10 and that he loved tacos---you used to make them for Ian and his friends. I know he was your pride and joy. I felt as if I had known him~~just from your talking about him and your love for him! He grew up to be a handsome, wonderful and brave man~~~~what a great job you did!! I thank Ian for fighting for all of us, so we can live a free life. To Ian's wife and children: I am terribly sorry . Just know that your husband and Daddy was a very honorable man, a man to be proud of to do all that he could to give you a better life. He is looking upon all of you from Heaven and he is always in your heart. Evelyn, I so badly wanted to come for the funeral, but unfortunately I did not know when it was. God Bless all you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Titi Jen

I am here to tell you and everyone else that may be reading this, how very much I love you. This must be the hardest time in all of your life... And I cant even begin to imagine how you must feel. You are a strong woman, and I admire you so much for that. Out of all of this pain and hurt you still stood strong, and never stoped believing in yourself. I didnt know Tio Ian very much, but i know he must have been a wonderful person or you wouldn't have choose him. Just keep praying and i will do the same. Just remeber that God loves you and Ian will continue to live on in you and marcus's heart.

Jesenya, Tiffany and Mcleods,

My heart goes out to you and your family. I never imagined this would happen to you Ian. I remember you as a young teenager and can't believe what a great man you grew up to be. I know you are here in spirit walking besides your children. Jesenya, you know you are your Daddy's clone, it’s amazing. Ian, you have some strong genes. God bless you Tiffany, I never thought you would be such a great, dedicated Mother. Now you have to be even stronger for your daughter, who needs you more than ever. Evelyn, you are a gracious strong willed woman, with so much wisdom. Your son is looking down so proud to have had you for a Mother. May the lord embrace you during this difficult time.

You were an only child but you were my brother Ian and more. You were my best friend, overall a great person and words can't even describe the tremenedous heartache your ultimate sacrifice has caused our families&friends. I sit here and battle my mixed emotions and can't help but to think back and relive memories we shared, unforgetable memories you gave me, my family and most importantly my sister. The time I've known you, your gifted presence, your blessed personality touched my family, especially my sister JENNIFER. You grew on us instantly and we became so fond of you to the point we developed respect, admiration, love, and understanding as to why Jennifer loved you so much and chose you. You brought my sister incredible joy and happiness, a love many spend a life time searching so desperately for, but you gave it to her immediately and for that you are her HERO. You sacrifieced it all to protect and serve not only her and your children but also your country and now your THE NATIONS HERO! Ian I'm so proud of you for you lived up to the man you were and will always be. Our precious loss is the lords gain and I pray the lord gives each and every soul you came in contact with, each heart you touched the strength, the comfort, and the peace to get through this time as we all grieve. I will miss you dearly and know that I love you now and always and I will NEVER forget you!!!!!!!!!! I will always remember you because your blessed presence lives through my sister Jennifer and my nephew/godson Marcus. Our sweet precious angel may you rest in peace.

Dear Evelyn,

We would like to express our deepest condolences from the bottom of our hearts for your loss. Ian was a fine young man, strong, smart and caring. Having the opportunity to grow and mature with a hero such as him was an honor.

Many times people pass away who never really lived their life; Ian was someone who lived everyday to its maximum. Whether he was the young man who wrote rhymes or the Soldier who fought for the freedom of us all, his life was one lived with happiness, vigor and purpose. Ian did die a hero, fighting to protect the FREEDOM of his son, his daughter, his family, friends and country.

We have lost more than just a soldier; Ian was a great son, a great friend, a great father and a great man.

He will not soon be forgotten
