Richard J. Henkes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2006.
An Army sergeant from the Portland area was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq, his family said Tuesday. Sgt. 1st Class Richard Henkes, 33, died Sunday in Mosul, where he had been serving the past two months, his sister told The Oregonian newspaper. Henkes, a graduate of Clackamas High School, was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. He joined the Army in 1992, training for the infantry, according to his sister, Army Capt. Linda Bass of Birmingham, Ala. "When Rich enlisted, he was in for a couple of years, and then he got out and was in the National Guard for a while," Bass said. Her brother eventually re-enlisted, in part because he wanted to provide steady support for his family. "He loved what he was doing, and he was very, very good at what he did," Bass said. "It''s what he knew and believed in." Henkes was the 71st member of the military with ties to Oregon or southwest Washington to die in Iraq or Afghanistan. Leading his first platoon, Henkes knew the dangers facing him and his soldiers, his sister said. Bass had been stationed in Iraq in 2003, and they talked many times about what could happen over there. She said her younger brother tried to reassure her. But in e-mails home, he indicated he sometimes worried about his platoon members. Still, he believed in the mission in Iraq, Bass said. "He believed in serving his country and doing something that would have a positive effect," she said. "He believed he was doing something for the greater good." Henkes was following a family tradition. His father served in the Air Force, and both his grandfathers were in the Army and fought in World War II. A great-grandfather fought in World War I, Bass said. Henkes grew up in Boring. In high school he wrestled and ran track, but his passion was snowboarding. Last December, he taught his 17-year-old niece, Cassidy Richard, how to ride a snowboard on Mount Hood during a family vacation to celebrate Bass'' wedding. Henkes was "always the jokester" at family gatherings, his sister said. "But he could also be very quiet," she said. "He was very serious about what he was doing for a living. He was a very caring and compassionate person." Henkes is survived by his daughter, Isabel, 5, of Vancouver, Wash.; parents, Chris and Jim Stanton of Ashdown, Ark., and Richard and Karen Henkes of Woodburn; sisters, Bass, Tamara Henkes of Portland, Dana Harmel of Woodburn and Cindy Stanton of Hot Springs, Ark.; and brothers, Mark Holmgren of Woodburn and Paul Stanton of Arkadelphia, Ark. Bass said she will fly to Dover Air Force Base, Del., to accompany her brother''s body home as his official military escort. -- At Richard J. Henkes II''s funeral, pastor Dave Albanese joked that Henkes had to join the military after growing up with two older sisters. "He was used as their personal dress-up doll when he was young," Albanese said. "Some say he joined to preserve his masculinity." Henkes, 32, of Portland, Ore., died Sept. 3 of injuries when a bomb detonated near his vehicle in Mosul. He graduated high school in 1992 and was assigned to Fort Lewis. In high school he wrestled and ran track, but his passion was snowboarding. Cassidy Richard, his niece, remembered her uncle as the man who taught her how to snowboard last year on Mount Hood. "I fell a lot," she said. "He was my best friend, and I knew if I ever needed to talk to somebody, he was there. I want to remember him from those memories. I''m proud of him for doing what he did." Henkes'' sister, Army Capt. Linda Bass, read from the soldier''s creed to show how much the service meant to her brother. "I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade," she read. "That was my brother. That''s what he was doing over there." He also is survived by his daughter, Isabel, 5.

I was classmates with Rich at Clackamas, he went into the army, I went into the Marines. The last time I saw him was at Clackamas Town Center when happenstance brought us together. I talked about my experience from Desert Storm and he told me he was going back into the army on active duty. We parted ways and years later I was reading the paper and was devastated to learn that he had been killed in Iraq. Rich gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country and I will never forget. Till Valhalla.

SFC Henkes was my squad leader at JBLM in 2004. We were in scouts platoon sniper section and he was like a father figure to all of us. I remember he was very helpful, always knowledgeable and spoke highly of his family especially his daughter. Thank you for all you have done SFC Henkes. I miss you and thank you for being there for me.

SFC Henkes was my squad leader for over a year at JBLM. At that time I was going through a great deal of anguish with my divorce and custody proceedings. As a young man so far away from home, I had no one to help me with the loss of my family. SFC Henkes was that guiding hand. He ultimately gave me what I needed to become a good soldier, and the strength to fight for my family. 10 years later now and I have custody of my son and a new family, in which Rich will always have a place. I looked up to him as a leader and behind closed doors, he was more like a big brother or father. I miss ya Rich. You gave me a gift that I cannot repay. Love you Brother

Rest in peace SFC Henkes. I will always remember what you did for me when i first arrived at FT. Lewis, WA. in '99. It was your duty to watch out for and train a new group of soldiers and there were some very long days because of the extra attention you gave to me.. : ) It seemed as if you knew how to bring out the best in me and you truly wanted me to succeed! When you left for Korea I tried in everyway to make you proud and to be an example of your leadership. Upon your arrival back to FT. Lewis from Korea, its almost as if you sought me out and the look on your face when you saw me wearing Corporal stripes, I will never forget!! You gave me a sense of pride, willpower and determination that still exists today. I am a better man today because of you and I recently had a braclet made that i will carry with me to celebrate your life, your courage and your duty to our great country. You are a great man and may you have eternal happiness! Deuces Wild!

I just returned from Marez and the rededication of your street, Rich. CSM Bjerke was there, as were several of your Soldiers, your friends. I saw the CHU where you lived - took a picture of Moreno, Harrington and Koryavich in front of it. It was a great day. Emotional, but really a great day. I'm bringing your street signs home - two are the originals and four are new. They will all be replaced on your street. It was a warm day, and I enjoyed walking and talking with your Soldiers. Know that you are remembered by so many. I miss you, Rich, and I'd give anything in this world to have you back. We all would. Do you know what I think you are remembered for the most? Your smile. That grin. . .

Love you Rich.

Hello,
I represent PRAYER SHAWLS 4 FALLEN SOLDIERS (PS4FS), an organization that since October 2007 has sent over 2,700 prayer shawls to military families who have lost a loved one. We are an organization of over 238 groups from all over the country. We make every effort to reach families even when post cards are returned after they have moved. Would you kindly send me a contact email/address so that we may send a prayer shawl to the family? Thank you!

I was a neighbor of Rich's growing up. I met Rich at the school bus stop in junior high school. Later on, Rich would give me rides to school in his yellow 1977 Dodge Dart with a black vinyl top. He would give me advice about school, sports and girls. Rich was very dynamic, even at a young age. He was a great athlete, he excelled at wrestling and track. He played the Trombone well, not many people can say that. Most importantly Rich was a great friend and person. As is the case with many people, we lost contact with one another over the years. I have only recently heard of his passing and I just want people to know how much he will be missed and never forgotten.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Richard, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the familiy of Sgt. 1 Class Richard Henkes. I am yery sad about the destiny of your son. I did not know him at all. I am just a foreign man from Germany with the same familyname. But maybe it is a comfort for you, to know that his has a namesake, Mr. Pater Richard Henkes, who also died for his fight for freedom and his belief. For me he is a hero, and the same muss apply for your son. Without knowing your son, i feel a very big respekt for him.

To the Henkes family-My heart goes out to you for your loss. I served with SFC Henkes at Fort Lewis (A-1/23 INF) in the late '90s. He was a new Sergeant and I was a brand-new Private. Although we were in different platoons, we worked together often and I could see even then that he was destined to be a top-notch NCO. My head spun when I accidently came across this site and learned he was gone. My thoughts and prayers to all of you. He truly will be missed.

To the family of Sgt Richard Henkes. I know what ever we have to say could never take your pain away even though I know in my heart your beloved Richard is in heaven. Here on earth he did everything that he could to make sure this country was safe and that his family would never have to worry about freedom now that he is in heaven God has him as one of his soldiers also pretenting still but this time with God almighty. His time was short and that is never easy to deal with but he made a huge impact in the short time that he was here on earth. I hope to make a quilt for you I just hope I have the right address for you and if I don't then please email me so I can send your quilt to the right address. I hope when you have your bad days that you can take your quilt and wrap yourself with it and feel the love that we put into your quilt for you. We can not reach out in person and put our arms around you but I hope that when you receive your quilt that it will be our arms around you to show you that we have not forgotten and that yes we care what Richard did for all of us. he is a hero and will always be a hero to all of us that understand that freedom is not free it took someone like Richard to care enough to protect us all so we can continue to enjoy freedom. God bless you all her is my email if you need to get a hold of me. [email protected] my name is Betty and I hope to hear from you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Wow, I am so glad I found this guest book. I have been so upset since I found out about Rich, and in agony that I had no way of getting ahold of his family. My name is Sheri and Rich was a very special person to me. I saw him last in December of 05, and feel terrible that I wasn't able to see him before he left. I was just emailing him pictures of my new baby when a friend called me and asked if I had seen the papers 2 weeks ago.
To his family: Please know how very special Rich was. I will never know another person like him. He helped me through some rough times, as I think I did him as well. We were inseperable for a short time, but always remained the closest of friends. Karaoke buddies, as well as shoulders to cry on.
I am sad that the world has lost one of it's kindest people, and wish I had some way of saying goodbye.
The last time I saw Rich wasn't as long as I would have liked, but the one thing I have is that when I did say goodbye, as well as hello, I think we hugged harder and longer than any hug in my lifetime. I still cry, knowing he's gone, but am thankful I have my memories of him, as well as the time we spent together.
Love you babe! Sing some Karaoke up there for me, and save a duet for when I reach you someday again. I hope everyone who knew you knows just how wonderful you were! I'll miss you TONS!

To the family of SFC Richard Henkes:

In the late 90s I had the honor of serving with SFC Henkes as his squad leader at Fort Lewis, when he was a SP4 and later a corporal and sergeant.

In twenty years of active duty, seventeen of which I spent as an NCO, there were only a few soldiers I met who were so good, so smart, fit, competent, and dedicated to their job that they made you feel like a better leader just by being associated with them. Rich was one of those.

My deepest sympathies go out to CPT Bass and SFC Henkes' family.

September 19, 2006

To the Family of Sgt. lst Class Richard J. Henkes:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

SFC Henkes was my NCOIC in the JSA in Korea. His soldiers were always his number one priority, and he always believed in putting others before himself. May God bless him and his family.

To all who have posted comments about my brother. . . thank you so much for your kind thoughts. He was a very special man and an awesome Soldier. Please pray also for those he left behind in Mosul. They, too, are suffering, but must still continue on with the mission. They will need everyone's support.

Rich and I served in Korea at the JSA before he left for the Stryker Brigade. In 18 years of service I've seen few who equalled his professionalism, his sense of duty, and his attention to detail. He was truly a soldier's soldier and an inspiration to everyone who worked with him. Well done, Sergeant First Class Henkes. Be at peace.

Dear Richard, your steadfast and fair disposition affected many people and I hope that your daughter and your close ones will know that you are an amazing individual with a destiny that I would have loved to have seen fulfilled. I can only imagine the kind of affect that you have had on everyone else around you up to this point. All I could ever say is that I probably would be very proud.
