I would like to share my experience as a Boy Scout in renovating a memorial for SGT. Bevington for my Eagle project. Some of you may not know this but the family of SGT Bevington established a memorial boat launch in his name along the Beaver River in Wampum, Pa. SGT. Bevington spent a lot of time here before he joined the Army and loved to fish along the river and explore in this area. The memorial area is a 1.3 acre site that includes a boat launch and has a dedicated walking trail along the river. It is along a lazy stretch of the river perfect for kayaking and other boat trips and features large trees overhanging the site and river providing plenty of shade in a very peaceful setting. Despite being in a somewhat remote area, the sites gets a fair amount of use from people exploring the river in canoes and kayaks. It is also a rest stop for hikers traveling along the North Country Trail. The memorial was originally purchased by the Bevington family around 2007 with support from local community organizations and later transferred to the Lawrence County Conservation District. Overtime, some of the structures at the site began to fall into disrepair until recently when I decided to step in.

For the project, I replaced two existing wooden benches at the outer edges of the memorial site. There were two additional wooden benches on cement foundations in the center of the site that were in pretty bad shape so these were upgraded to engraved memorial park benches with text that reads "In Memory of SGT Allan Bevington U.S. Army". One of the information kiosks was refurbished with a new roof, plexiglass enclosure, and a fresh coat of paint. Finally, perennial flowers and mulch were added around the existing memorial stone, memorial benches, and at the stone entrance sign.

It was an honor to complete this work for my Eagle project and I am grateful for the sacrifice SGT. Bevington and so many others have made for our country.

Special Thanks to the following organizations for supporting this project:
o American Legion, Post 261, Beaver Falls
o American Legion, Post 749, Wampum
o Lawrence Country Municipal Government
o Reliable Lumber & Supply Company, New Castle

First and foremost I would like to apologise for waiting for so long to do this. This is very difficult for me. I was his gunner. It was difficult to figure out what to say so I decided to share a memory with you all. The morning was like most mornings when bit was my squads turn to do patrols. We left out between 7:30 and 8:00 that particular morning. Rolled out on the hard ball for a bit and the convoy Commander decided to go check out a dirt road and see what we could find. I don't remember if we dismounted but I don't think we did. We parked our trucks to set up security and we were scanning for IEDs and didn't find anything but in the midst of everything we started getting mortared nobody got hurt but SGT Bevington was the driver that day and took our truck up over a steep narrow hill almost high centering the truck. He was able to save the truck and when we all could regroup on the other side we made sure everyone was good went back to the hard ball and continued doing our thing. He was a great man and I think about him a lot. I'm sorry again for not getting to this a lot sooner.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Bevington Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Allan R. Bevington US Army Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Very touched and reminded of your sacrifice from reading 1st Sgt Mike McGuire in a Sports Illustrated column I follow regularly. My daughter has just completed week 3 of boot camp at Ft. Jackson, so our excitement remains tempered when we see the unfortunate possbilities of tragedy. May we be thankful daily for our freedom, and mindful of the brave people who dedicate their lives for that cause.

You are a hero; plain and simple. You remond me what it is to be an American and to be proud that I am one. I salute you; God bless your family.

Hey sweet boy, thinking of you! Always wonder what you'd be like today if you'd come home. I was so excited for you to come to Ft Lewis with us, but God had other plans. Your godson is a going to be kindergartner soon! And your name sake, Olivia Rae is such a pretty little girl. Then again, I guess you know all this as you watch from Heaven. Keep an eye on Sgt T as he works. He misses you too. We all do. Love you so very much!! Amey Trujillo <3

Wow, I sort of stumbled acrossed your guest book. I was actually looking to see if there was any kind of memorial page for you on Facebook. We miss you & love you sooo very much. Jorge has never had a friend like you since we lost you & he never will. When he told me you were coming to Ft Lewis after your deployment, I was so excited--I just expected you to be around for dinner & what not. I'm so sorry that you didn't make it back. Its been three years+ & it feels like we just lost you. Jorge wanted you to be Alejandro's godfather--and you are. Olivia has your middle name. You will always be close to our hearts & will never be forgotten. Love you so much!

I will forever miss you and I speak you name everyday to carry on your name in A co 40th. We are constructing a memorial site for you and others we lost, it is being constructed right now in Baumholder, Germany right by the flag pole. Don't worry, everyone that knows me,,,,, knows you and the son, brother, friend, and wolfpack member that you are. I am almost done with this 15 month deployment, we lost 5 fellow soldiers this deployment. Still yours hits the hardest..... Talk to you later

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Allan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

SGT Bevington, it took me over a year to be able to write this. It is MAC (PLT SGT). I don't know were to begin, I'm sorry does not convey my feelings, I miss you and think of you everyday. That day is forever a part of me, how I lived and you did not, God must have wanted you right away. I have wanted to call your family and let them know how I feel but can not muster up the courage to do it. I just wanted to post a message to say thank you for being you and that I am a changed man forever because I knew you. Again, I am having a hard time with the words, "I MISS YOU" take care my brother and watch over us all. SFC McGuire

August 17, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I served with SGT Bevington in Ramadi, I was in his platoon. I never met someone with a sense of humor like his, he could always make us laugh when it was tough. He was by far one of the best people I ever meet, a real man, spoke his mind and cared about his soldiers. He was a brave, and willing to do ANYTHING. He was true soldier and with always be a member of "Wolfpack" forever. We not only lost a friend that day, we lost a brother. He was just a great man, someone to look up too. He is missed greatly. I was privaleged to have served with him.

I was Bev's executive officer in Iraq when he was killed. I can only say that he was a NCO of the finest sort and the soldiers would rather have him than no other to lead them into battle. He was truly beloved by all. He had a tremendous sense of humour that was essential to his comrades and was nothing short of a stellar soldier. He is sorely missed among his comrades and will always be remembered as a friend, leader, and hero. May God Protect you and Keep You, Captain P.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Allan. Although I did not know him, he was a brother in arms to all that wear the uniform. Please accept my condolences and I thank you and Allan for the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

To the Family of Sgt. Allan R. Bevington:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Please know that I am deeply sorry to learn of the loss of Sgt. Allan R. Bevington.
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,
and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,
I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.
The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.
Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.
May Allan Rest Safely, in the Mighty Arms of God and know that he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
I pray that God's Loving Comfort and Grace will be with the Bevington family.
I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Surely He hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrow.
Isaiah 53:4

With each new day, may the Lord restore your soul and, through His love, give you the strength to go on.
You are in my prayers.
