I still think about you all the time. I always find myself wondering, "what if?" Though its been almost 12 years, it still feels like just yesterday. I can still hear your voice, your words, ringing through my head... I'll never forget the time we had together. It was certainly a precious gift to have you in my life.
They say everything happens for a reason... I'm still trying to figure it out after all this time. I guess some things.. we never do.
I love you to the moon and back, even still and for all of eternity.

Postscript to August 01, 2008 entry
When Run For The Fallen was capturing the attention of a grateful nation in the summer of 2008, I tried to contact the eight fallen soldiers' families for whom RSM Velton Locklear ran seven additional miles in Clinton County, IL, besides the one for his son Velton III. He had flown from Texas in support of the RFTF team and all the fallen heroes they honored. During his three day stay in this rural heartland of our nation, where the reception was possibly one of the largest and most well orchestrated by patriotic Americans , he met families of the fallen and veterans from World War II, Korean and Vietnam conflicts, the First Gulf War where he had served and, of course, Desert Storm and Afghanistan. Five families were contacted in anticipation of them receiving special recognition . The people of Breese and Germantown still hope Sgt Jason Jones' family will be in touch.
Today, I finally received a long awaited labor of love DVD from Tim in Breese, IL, who documented the miles run to honor Jason and the seven soldiers who lost their lives in September 2006. Here on the West Coast I shed tears with a Gold Star mom in GA who like me had watched this event unfold.... not an especially slick Hollywood movie but, nevertheless, a poignant visual and musical tribute to the Run, to the fallen soldiers honored by Velton's miles, to the people of the heartland who made sure every mile on those country county highways and small towns had people turning out to cheer, wave flags and to gather in serious homage at the splendid war memorial , the vision of the mayor of Germantown, Gerry Kohnen, who literally in a couple of minutes of listening to me, a stranger on his phone all the way from California, pledged, not only his community but the whole of Clinton County would be out in force to give due honor to the Fallen and their families.
So we would like very much for the Jones family to have this small gift in honor of their son's memory from a grateful nation. Please be in touch.
As a postscript, there will be another solo run in the summer, this time across the northern states.A mile will again be run for Charles Jason Jones by Mike Ehredt and his visionary Project America Run . Check out the website for details.

Sgt Jones I only knew you for a short time but you seemed to make an impact on everyone who met you. I won't ever forget the day they came to my room to tell me the news. We were supposed to go running that morning and neither of us showed up. I'm just sorry it turned out the way it did. You told me of your plans for when you got home. I just wish you could have seen yours out. I miss you and i think about you. Sgt James W. Montgomery Jr ( Monty)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Charles, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To all of Jason's family and wide circle of friends, the Run For The Fallen team honored your son at mile 2692 on day 45 July 29, 2008 . What a morning it was - probably one of the most heartfelt and supportive of the whole 4000+miles run!
www.runforthefallen.org
The team set out from Mascoutah, IL, about 6:30am after reading the roll call for the almost 60 fallen heroes whom they would honor that day. Police excorts and fire engines were out along the route. You can actually see quite well on the hybrid map on the FLICKR pages on www.runforthefallen.org
Jason's mile was significant. It began by the new Veterans' Memorial in Germantown IL,after a large gathering from around the county had come to pay respects, meet the Team and continue to honor our fallen heroes.
A small flag with Jason's picture is still blowing in the breeze by the highway. A larger Old Glory was jogged down the highway. Sometimes, it is a lone runner or the standard bearer is accompanied by friends or family, if they are in the area, or other concerned Americans adding their support.
Jason's mile was run by a Gold Star dad who had a special reason to be there. He had flown all the way from Laredo TX.
Last evening, this dad, a ret.Sgt Major made a long call to me after he had returned from three days in Clinton Co. IL where he had planned to run miles 2698 and 2699 for his son and his son's buddy, Wolfhounds from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, who had been killed on Sept.23, '06.
Normally reserved, quiet and deeply grieving, this encounter with such solid and almost overwhelming support from the small towns in Clinton Co. had unleashed much emotion. He explained how he had decided to run 8 miles, starting with your Jason's and ending with him saluting his son's flag on the country road.
You have to hear him tell what he said to the assembled crowd about how he felt about running to honor the sons of other families who could not be there. This Gold Star dad's experience may help other grieving Gold Star dads, especially, so if you would like to chat with him, just be in touch with me. Don't be a stranger.
It had only taken one cold call by me a few weeks ago to the mayor of Germantown who grasped the significance and rallied every mayor in the county to get behind this RFTF outreach. It was a moving tribute from America's heartland and will not end there. Further plans are in the works to contact all those families honored that day. We hope you will be in touch. There will be some mementos to be shared and, in the case, of Jason, my Texas friend tells me this amazing mayor hopes you will be in touch so he can share his vision for something extra special for your son.Don't be a stranger! You have to hear it from the Sgt Major!
Today, I realised that on day 54, August 7, the Team will be staying at the Doubletree Suites in Oak Ridge TN, not so far from you. The next morning, Day 55, at around 6am they will be preparing for the run to New Tazewell, TN, on August 8th, and from there they will go to Van Hill.
Here is an opportunity for family and friends to meet the Team, run some miles and thank them for the special morning in Germantown where they will not have forgotten your Jason's honor mile.
Just a possibility...?
On August 24, across the nation, small informal runs of friends can be organize to coincide with the Final Run at Arlington National Cemetery.
It only takes one person to get the momentum going as I found out in my home town of Irvine, CA , where this Sunday we shall remember that RFTF is honoring one of our own Mark Daily, just outsdie of Nashville TN. There has been a groundswell of support to our seven Irvine families by people who will not forget their sacrifice and plan to come out on August 24 in a show of solidarity to all familes of the Fallen.
As my Texas friend pointed out, your family and his began this long and difficult trail of grief within a few days of each other. Don't be strangers. Walk it together!

My name is SSG Brian Mires. I had the priviledge of serving with Jason as a medic at Eagle Base Tuzla Bosnia. He was an upstanding soldier. What I will miss most is the way he talked. I could never understand a word he said and always had to ask him to repeat himself. It was funny. We always joked about it. I will miss him tremendously. God be with his family and him whereever he may be. God speed my friend.....

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

The Army taught us in Basic Training that military people were family; and since I have left the Army, I have found this to be true. Personally, I take the death of any solider as if one of my own brothers or sisters have been killed. Your son was defending his country, and the freedoms he loved. I want to thank him, and thank you for allowing him to serve so we all can be free. God bless, and we all will see him in heaven one day.

To Jason's family, I cannot say I know how you feel but our son is grieving the loss of his friend. Jason and Chad (Maj. Chad Nelson) were together in Baghdad and we were told they were often mistaken for one another. Chad wrote us that they shared many talks about family. Jason saw his Dad as the one the family looked up to and his Mom was the glue that held the family together. They talked fishing and hunting. Friends finding kinship in a troubled world. I am so sorry pain is so common but believe God does bring good out of evil and your Son did not die in vain but only has gone before you. May the peace only God can give sustain you in the days ahead and the knowledge of how Jason touched lives in a lonely place give you comfort. Prayerfully yours, Bobbie Nelson

Please know that our sympathies, condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to you during this time of loss and sorrow. I pray that you will find comfort, peace and strength in the divine grace of the Lord.
When I paused to think and recall, what it was that I felt were the most important and special things SFC Jones meant to me, I realized it was not merely the great work that he did while serving as a member of our team, but rather the great person Jason was, that I will miss most of all.
Jason is painfully missed and mourned by those of us who came to know, love and enjoy his country-boy humor, good and generous nature, easy laughter and room-warming smile. I will always remember this good man.
Mission complete SFC Jones... well done Battle-Buddy... farewell Jason... rest in peace my friend.

I am the mother of SFC Charles J Jones. I want to share with others that are mourning Jason's passing some words from God that have helped me.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 In everything give thanks;
Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things
Romans 8:28 And we know all things work together for good to them that love God,
Psalms 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me:
Psalms 138:8 The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me; thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.
I hope these scriptures can help someone else as they have helped me. God sends ministering angels to help carry us through when we can't make it alone. Though my heart breaks, God will get me through this.

To the Family of SFC Charles Jason Jones:
I am deeply saddened to see that another soldier has been KIA in Iraq. We want you to know that we grieve with you over the loss of another precious soul such as your son Charles. I know from first hand experience the terrible shock you are feeling and what you must be going through. We lost a son in Ramadi, Iraq on December 1, 2005, SFC Brent A. Adams.
I know there is nothing I can say at this point in time that will ease your pain and sorrow over the terrible loss of your brave and courageous son Charles. We know your hearts are broken and there is now a void and deep sadness in your heart that will never be filled. It is like a scar that will always remain with you. May it help you to know that there are others who share your pain, agony and sorrow. While the pain will probably never leave but lessen some with time, we pray the Lord gives you comfort, peace and strength to help you cope with this earth shattering loss no parent ever wants to experience.
This is an extremely difficult time, but hold on to those wonderful memories of your brave soldier….the ones that make you laugh and remember with joy the moments that you shared. The laughter between all those tears is one of the ways that will help you work through your grief. Charles is a hero (a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities) and even though we were not fortunate enough to know him we pray for you and all your family and for all those men and women serving our country so valiantly. Our children have made the ultimate sacrifice and they will always be honored and never forgotten. Unfortunately these tragic events have bound all of us together and changed our lives forever. God Bless you and all those who mourn the loss of OUR FALLEN HEROES and thank you for the courageous service your soldier preformed for all of us. We wait for the day we can be reunited once again with our loved ones in the Lord’s House. You now have your own guardian angel to watch over all of you. If you feel the need to talk about your son we would be glad to listen and hear more about the life of your loved one.

To the Family of Sgt. lst Class Charles J. Jones:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

To the family of SFC Jones, my heart and prayers are with you during this traumatic life change and also in the days ahead.
May the memories of Jason help you through this.
I was proud to serve with Jason in Afghanistan. He will be missed he was a proud "SOLDIER MEDIC".
May God be your guide, Jason is in good hands.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Sgt. 1st Class Charles J. Jones, with a multitude of Thanks for this Hero's Service and Dedication to our Country and for our Freedom.
May Charles Rest Safely, in God's Loving Care and know that he shall NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
May God's Loving Grace and Comfort be with the Jones family.
I am the Sister of such a young hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.
