Eric, It's really hard for Justin, Trisha and I to believe you have been gone so long. I want you to know that every year, Justin does a toast to you and I know, that your sacrifice lays heavy on his heart. I know your looking down at your Dad, and the one thing I can do to comfort him, is to remember you.

My name is Anne and I live at 643. I would like to thank you for your memorial flags over the many years. I am proud to display this in memory of Eric. I keep his picture on my bulletin board and often pray for him and his family. I was sad to see you had left. But be assured you are missed.

This message is for Eric's mother Gina, whom my daughter, her classmates, and I had the pleasure of meeting at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, October 21, 2019. Our group was visiting Section 60, and immediately next to us we saw Gina sitting in front of her son's grave. I quietly walked up to her and introduced myself. I wanted her to know our group would move to another location if we were bothering her, and she said it was wonderful to see so many young people paying respects. As a teacher who helped prepare these students for the trip, I was blessed beyond measure to see how they rallied around Ms. Barnhurst and loved on her and prayed for her. Little does she know, that while she may feel we blessed her, SHE is the one who blessed us. As a mother whose daughter was on the trip, I can assure you that Eric Herzberg will live on in our memory, and his service to our country will forever be remembered. While we never met him, we learned about him from his mom. We learned how he was driven to serve and how he felt called by God to go fight for those who could not fight for themselves. It is because of Eric and men and women like him that we are able to live in this beautiful country. I want Eric's mom Gina to know the impact she had by just being there remembering and honoring her son. She left a legacy she may never know. Thank you to all who serve and for those families who have servicemen and women in their ranks. We are grateful.

To the family of Eric,
Was watching the Memorial Day program on TV and they showed the tombstone of your son. I quickly googled him and want to know about this American Hero. I cried once I was directed to this page and saw his picture. I am so sorry for your loss. Now I have a face and name to remember and thank for my freedom. I will share him with my sons.
I want to visit his grave someday. He will not be forgotten.

Dear Eric
On the date of your memorial it is so hard for me and Justin because we never know what to say to your dad and Wendi. We feel so inadequate. It takes me a few days to recoup. I just want you to know that we all miss you and love you very much. Your a role model and a hero that we will never forget. I mention your name every chance that I get to keep your memory alive. I know in my heart that you are watching over us and that your in a glorious place, but it doesn't stop Justin and I from missing you.

My heart goes out to your family whom i know miss your smile, humor and love for God and Country. Here is a poem I wrote long ago which I know is God's words using me as a tool to express his love for the human race. "TEARDROPS"... Teardrops of Love and Teardrops of Sorrow all come from Above,Happy Teardrops and Sad Teardrops all come from Love, Look around and see and know the reason Why that the "Rain" that is falling and landing on your face are the Tears I've been sheading to save our Human Race". Eric you were a soldier of God as I was in Nam so that one day the Human Race could be saved...You will be in my thoughts on Nov 10th this year and every year...Semper Fi

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I graduated boot camp with eric and was very close to him. Me and him and a few others were a close group and used to cut jokes to loosen the mood of boot camp. I cant say Eric had the funniest jokes but was always there with that laugh no one will ever forget. He was a very self motivated marine. He was definatly one of the best i have ever met. We continued on through training with school of infantry in dec of 05 and were supposed to graduate in feb of 06. When we left halfway for christmas i never returned due to a bad illness. Me and Eric still talked a little up until he went to Iraq. I had been driving down the road in Nov. when my buddy who i also graduated with had called me and told me what had happened. I feel honored to have known such a strong and noble man. I cry everytime i see those videos on youtube and mourn his death. I am deeply sorry for his familys lose. But not only that, i am sadly sorry for anyone who never met him. Thank you all who have put up sites and videos. God bless you all and especially his parents.

While I did not have the honor to know Eric. I did have the honor to know his brother Matthew, whom I coached last spring on the Severn River U19 Rugby Team. If Eric was anything like his brother, then the world has lost a tremendous young man too soon.
I understand your pain with the loss, I lost my father this past May in Afghanistan. It is tragic that we have to deal with these losses but we honor their memories everyday that we continue on and they will not have given their lives in vain.
God Bless you all.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.
Yesterday, Today, Forever – Semper Fi - Marines!
Our sincerest gratitude for their bravery-

Words can never fully express the depth of emotions over the loss of a loved one ... especially one so young. So, instead, we offer thoughts of happiness ... the happiness you'll find in your memories of times past, of the joys experienced together throughout the years and the love you and your family shared with Eric. God bless.

Dear Herzberg Family,
Even though we have never met, I feel as if we are a part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed in Iraq by an IED on Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you as close to His heart as He has held my family this past year. May you feel His comfort and peace as you travel down this difficult road.

To the family:
We are so very sorry for your loss. We are especially touched because we received word only minutes ago that our grandson arrived in Iraq today beginning his year long deployment. You are rightfully proud of your son, but his loss will always be a hole in your hearts. We pray for you in your loss and grief.

To the family of Lance Cpl. Eric W. Herzberg,
I am so sorry for your loss and will pray for you that God give you the strength you need to get through these tough and trying times. I have a brother that was just shipped over to Iraq for the second time and pray for him as well. I couldn't imagine losing him as you have lost your son however, I will have comfort knowing he loves what he does as did your son. You should be very proud as I can see that you are. You have raised a wonderful man! Thank you so much for sharing with the world and for being so brave.

To all those signing this guest book:
I am touched and comforted by your words. As our family now joins a select group that none of us would ever choose to be a part of, we find encouragement and solace in our common bond of sadness, reverence and pride. These young men and women of ours have given selflessly. Their legacy truly is one of service and honor, never to be forgotten. I will forever miss my son but I find comfort in the knowledge he is at peace and that our eternal Father needed him.

To the family of Lance Cpl Eric Herzberg:
You are in our thoughts and prayers. There are no words one can say to ease your pain. Know that many share your pain and are praying for you.
Our son was killed in Iraq on September 16, 2006. If is was not for the love and support of family, friends and the parish of St. Francis de Sales in Abingdon, I am not sure we would have beeb able to get through it. We know the pain that you are going through and our thoughts are with you.
Eric was truly a hero and was doing what was best for the people of Iraq. Remember the good times and be extrememly proud of him for what he choose to do.
There are many citizens in the United States, but only a few are called to do the work which our sons chose. Let us be proud of them and remember them always.
May God watch over you and protect you.
