Joshua C. Sticklen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 22, 2006.
Dan Magistri, a high school friend of Joshua C. Sticklen''s, remembers listening to his pal''s stories about his deployments and military life. His friend often wore a black leather jacket, jeans, a tight black T-shirt with a link-chain necklace. He was seldom without his Marine Corps gear, recalled Magistri. Magistri prayed for his friend during his deployments. Yet despite the dangers of war and personal unrest, he said: "When you look into Stick''s face, you would never know he had a care in the world." Sticklen, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., was killed Dec. 3 when his helicopter crashed in Anbar province. He was assigned to Kaneohe Bay. Sticklen, a 2000 high school graduate, enlisted in the Marines in October 2002 and became an intelligence specialist. He also served in Afghanistan. "He was charismatic," said Senior Chief Daniel Loop, Sticklen''s Naval Science instructor for four years. "He would stand up and lead and people would automatically follow him. That''s a rare quality in a young person. I saw it in him as young as a freshman." He is survived by his wife, Jennifer.

Remembering the happiness you brought to so many lives!

Jen Sticklen

September 20, 2013

It is almost 7 years that you were taken from me. I still remember and have the last conversation that we had, 2 hours before that damn crash. I am so thankful that our last words were I love you and I miss you... You always knew how much you were loved and you always showed me how much you loved me. There was never a question. Not a day goes by that I do not think about you. I go through the motions of "getting on with life" as you made me promise before you left in case this happened, but there are times when it is so hard.. 7 years later and I still have bad times. You were everything. We did everything together. I remember so much. I remember those times in the barracks when you would come over and help me so I would get done with field day because I had a crazy 1stSgt..or us just hanging out watching movies on the weekends. I remember our wedding day.. how you picked me up from the airport and we were running around trying to find rings because we didn't want to get married without them and then going to our beach and I was changing clothes in the jeep...So many memories, so many great times with you.

You always made sure I had a smile on my face, even after we argued. You hated me being upset. I miss your laugh so much. I miss you telling me you love me, or you setting my phone so it would go off daily just so I would know that you loved me. The little things you did just so I knew. My favorite was when we were in the hospital right before you leaving for Afghan and the nurse was hitting on you and you were laughing about it..but it did get me the biggest room..

You were such an incredible man and I was so lucky to have you in my laugh for as long as I did. I know you are up there with our kids playing and looking down on me keeping a watch on me.

I love you always and miss you incredible. You are always in my heart and soul.

Josh was the most amazing friend anyone could ever have! The memories and the laughter that his friendship brought to my life help a lil when I think of him. Josh, you are so greatly loved and missed!

To the family and friends of Cpl. Joshua C. Sticklen:
Please accept my remembrance of Joshua on the anniversary of his passing and know that he will never be forgotten.

October 21, 2011

First I would like to thank everyone for their kind words for the last few years. I do apologize for not responding sooner. It has taken be a few years to accept Josh's death, really accept it and to accept that he will never be coming home and have felt I am strong enough to deal with everything now.

With all of that said..Josh, I miss you every single day of my life..I miss everything we did..I miss hearing you laugh, our talks, us holding hands, our routines, just going to our beaches..I still do that when I want to be alone..Im drawn to our favorite places. I drive by where we got married and go there every year on our anniversary and I do the exact same thing we did when we got married..I drive by where we used to live, hear our songs..Not a day goes by that you are not someway in my life.

Til we meet again, I continue to love you and the life I was so honor to share with you. I will never forget what we shared. And as always babe, I will see you in my dreams until it is time for us to be together..Love you always, J

I have a very special place in my heart for the marine Corps. I met my husband many years ago at the Us Sub Base in Groton Conn.We were married 2 years later and we went on to North Carolina, California, South Carolina. I enjoyed being the wife of a Marine. I am so sorry to see some one so young to be gone so soon . But remember it was something that he wanted to do. To you and him i say THANK YOU. for what you did to keep me free

To the Sticklen Family,
I had the honor of being your Sons "Class Commander" at Intel School. I know its been a while since then, but I think of your son with the sincerest respect- he was a great Marine and a joy in the class. There is no replacement for him, but please know that he is remembered by his peers whose lives he touched!

My darling, beloved baby boy, is it possible to miss you so very much more as each day passes?? You will always be that little boy, whose desire in life was to be a "Marine"!! Remember your first cami's?? Your smile that always brightened up a room when you entered, your love of life and enjoyment of a good joke?? Oh, and how you always thought it was great fun when you could get one over on your sisters!! We all miss you so very much and would give anything to have you back!! One more hug, one more "Hay Mom" would light up my life!

My brain knows you are in a better place, and I ask God each day to give you a hug from your Mommy, but my heart still hurts!! Please know what a void your leaving has left in our hearts!!! You will never be forgotten, my son!! Not as long as I have a breath left in me!!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joshua, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy. I also lost my little brother on that helicopter. That was the worst two days of my life waiting to hear word. My brother Dustin Adkins was a wonderful person and a father. I will not say I know what you are going through because I hate when people say that. If I could be of any service to your family please let me know.

Dear Palmer Family,
Even though we have never met I feel as if we are a part of a family. My daughter's fiancee was killed in Iraq by an IED on 10/3/05. I pray that you will feel God holding you as close to His heart as He has held my family this past year and a half. May you know His comfort and peace.

To Joshua's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.
Yesterday, Today, Forever – Semper Fi - Marines!

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Please know how deeply sorry I am, for the loss of this Brave Young Marine,
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,
and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,
I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.
The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.
Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.

May Cpl. Joshua C. Sticklen, Rest Safely, in the Loving Care of God
and know that he Will Never Be Forgotten.
I pray that the Peace of God will be with the Sticklen family.
I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, 12/6/67.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee. Psalm 55:22

Sincerely hoping you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today and in the days ahead, as this Country mourns with you, for someone very precious to you, who is a Hero to all of us.
